@@littleman787 First conclusion from your comment, Zheng Siwei is Kevin's blind fan. because he defended Kevin and praised Kevin. even though he was his opponent, or zheng shiwei didn't think his attitude was a bad thing, even though he was his opponent. Second conclusion, Kevin's blind fans will think it's a mental game, but Kevin's haters will think it's a bad attitude, meaning Kevin's attitude can be good and can be bad depending on the point of view (relatively). third conclusion, despite many blind kevin fans and kevin haters, the fact is (not relative) he remains number one and that hasn't changed until now.
Kevin was the archetype of antagonist or villain on sport anime/manga. The one who smirked when he was challenged, flexing his skills to humbled his opponents, intimidating and provoking by his cockiness. Most of his opponent try to tame him, yet most of them came short. It is pretty fun when he is on our side, but I am pretty sure it is quite annoying when you have to face him.

Betul, kevin memiliki kepribadian yang sopan dan ramah di luar lapangan.
speed, aggressive, smart, full power, intelligence, entertainment, it's the first time I've seen a player this complete, very entertaining, KEVIN.S.S
he's a unique player, unique posture and very special skills
I wrote about this before (beware, it’s looong):
Honestly I don't see that his attitude is that 'unique' in badminton or ‘the worst’. Like Lin Dan (try to get physical in anger to the point that people needed to hold back his body, refusing silver medal on podium, walkout mid-game because of disagreement-still did that in 2019, etc), Taufik (on and off court, some that I don't need nor want to mention. But blessed with stoic face on court) or other players. Remember Bodin Isara and Maneepong Jongjit fight? Kevin's quite tame, but can be obnoxious indeed. Annoying, but harmless.
And he actually behaves, to many of his opponents. Especially to people he considers as friends or people who he likes like Ong/Teo, Kamura/Sonoda, Fajar/Rian, Ahsan/Setiawan, Lee/Wang (seems that they had friendly interactions in Bali outside of court) and after the Mazu Cup 2017, Zhang Nan, Zheng Siwei, Chan Peng Soon, Su Cheng-heng, among others. He’s also nice off court with his on court ‘nemesis’ like Goh V Shem, Liu Yuchen (even called them ‘Bro’). I noticed that he toned down his antics since end of 2018/early 2019.
He also doesn’t do his antics to all of his opponents, usually he needs something to trigger him like provocation, unnecessary tactical delaying, looooong serves, so on. A sport journalist once said that there are alot of things going on on court that not caught on camera, like saying provocative things to their opponent. Kevin is reactive. He once said that he doesn’t want to get oppressed/bullied so I assume that things happened to him before.
Also his antics with his junior, Yeremia Rambitan are just a running joke between them. Rambitan himself publicly said that post-match and Rambitan was encouraged by Marcus, Ahsan and Hendra in the name of fun. He also said that Kevin is actually friendly. That’s why Kevin is chill with his other juniors. Ahsan (who I really like) also done multiple airswings before but I never see any criticism of him online.
And from what I've seen, off court, he's actually quite reserved. Shy, even. He’s far from arrogant, narcissistic person that some might assume. Never bragged about his achievements or winnings, never trash talk nor even mentions about opponents he 'clashes' with. He always praise them too, win or lose. Earlier this year, he said that he’s still nothing, and off podium everything goes back to zero.
Whenever someone compliments him, he gets flustered and he’s awkward and looks uncomfortable around cameras. After Asian Games 2018, his popularity exploded in Indonesia and disturbed him to the point that he became a closed off person and only updating his social media for endorsement, business or special occasions. He couldn’t even post pictures of him hanging out with his friends that often because people will swarm his friends’ social media accounts to ask about him.
Other players like Zheng Siwei, Su Cheng-heng, Nyl Yakura, etc also have positive opinions for him and his national teammates, seniors, coaches & staff really like him. Herry IP once praise him that he’s not ‘manja’ (spoiled) and is dedicated. I also don't hear stuff about him being lazy, skipping training and such.
Recently he also defended players of other countries and asked people to not attack them because of the All England 2021 fiasco. Which made me appreciate him.
I must admit that he has that 'X factor' besides his skill and natural talent.
As long as he doesn't cheat, or does things like delaying serves too long to disturb the opponent, getting physical (TBH near impossible if he’s the one who start it. Realistically, almost all male players could really hurt him in fight unless others like Marcus protects him. But maybe he’s a fast and agile runner if Isara/Jongjit type of showdown somehow happen), or faking injury, and so on I think I could tolerate him.
But I do agree that he's too emotional and moody. And too cheeky for his own good. Maybe for him, some things that he has done were just him being playful or 'retaliation' of things that his opponents do but many people don't like that and found them disrespectful. I hope he becomes more mature in the future.
I don’t get when people said that his antics are the reason why he can’t win WC or the Olympics because tons of great players, legends even, with acceptable manner also couldn’t win them.
Also I don't like how many people glorify his antics. Or using him as excuse to brag and to have online fight with other countries. Or deny that he’s a skilled/great player because of his shenanigans.
Disclaimer: I'm not his ‘stan’ (or any player actually), but I do love to watch him play. I do some research because he’s enigmatic, polarizing and this topic is always mentioned. For long, I only know him on court and in interviews, but now I know more about him after the research.

kevin haters say he is not the best player because he can't win the olympics & WC, I think the best player is not judged in terms of what he achieves from the highest tournaments (WC, Olympics), because all players can achieve that, but consistency in winning every game is something The hardest thing for an athlete and consistency is something special that only Kevin Marcus has. You know in football there's ronaldo and messi, they've never won a world cup, but it's his consistency over the years that makes him the best player.

@@littleman787 what you say actually makes my argument bigger and stronger, consistently winning in individual games is more difficult than consistently winning in team games, because by consistently winning in individual games of course a player will play well, because he doesn't play well he will lose, when a player plays badly in a team, his team can still win as long as your teammates play well. what's missing from ronaldo and messi's team? he's backed by lots of great great players but still can't win the world cup. Portugal and Argentina have good players where they can win on their respective continents, but still can't win in the world.

but as long as I watch him play, he only provokes his nemesis, or opponents who are quite unstable in some encounters, or even opponents who start provoking Kevin first. and if he is known to have a bad attitude on the pitch, he is actually humble off the pitch. Even the last time he provoked the men's doubles pair "Astrup/skaruup rasmusen" at the WTF event in Bali, their relationship remained harmonious off the field. but here, mostly what I see are idiots who just judge it by "virtual spotlight" and call it bad attitude. they don't even know what's going on on the pitch.

nah, the dude who uploaded that video missing what really happened during the match. For example, take a look at the clips when Kevin & Gideon wearing red and white striped jersey. The reason why at Kevin provoked "playfully" because the Danes that constantly pressured their attack toward him. So he thought he wanted to show he's not that weak.
And Kevin purposely swing his racket even though it's out was to show the umpire that his racket didn't touch the shuttlecock.

His provocations make the game more interesting to watch bcoz you know it will turn to mental war. Kudos to his partner, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon bcoz he can withstand Kevin's behaviour on court😂

Hahaha...there must always be a 'clown' in sports but this clown can't take intimidation thrown back at him through the various 'faults' rightly or wrongly. I do not believe his association and country he represent approve of his antics but tolerate it at the moment as he is still producing results. Well to be fair to kevin, he's doing it a lot less these days.
Some may argue that his gamesmanship (his provocation and antics etc) was the very reason that affected his mental game during olympics which then impacted his performance that led to a loss.
Ultimately it's a risk to do it unless you have full control over the mental aspect of the game which at times may back fire like a doubled edged sword.
