I’m now 58 and played cricket in the late 70s to early 80s - I’m West Indian decent and I played without a helmet. Looking back now as a 58 year old, I was either incredibly brave or crazy. It takes courage, skill, and a little craziness to face the kind of bowlers I faced...you can actually hear the ball fizz as it flies past your head...for me it was the challenge, me against the bowler, luckily I was good enough to come out on top, most of the time. I never got seriously hurt

Cricket was actually very popular in America before the American Civil War especially around New York and Philadelphia. The first 'Test match' or international game was said to be between the United States and Canada in the 1840's, around 40 years or so before the England/Australia Test matches.

A big difference between cricket and baseball, is that if a pitcher intentionally throws the ball at a batsman it's considered as crossing the line (and fights happen). In cricket, if the bowler hits the batsman it's considered part of the game.

1:16 Brett Lee actually went easy on Piers Morgan, of course it was still no easy task for anyone to face him.
3:41 Cricket once was the most popular sport in US (& also CAN), it's been played probably since early 1700s (so before US was even independent, Washington is said to have played with his troops, Lincoln apparently was a regular spectator at Cricket matches). In 1844 the 1st ever International Cricket match was played (it was also apparently the 1st International sporting event of modern times, before even modern Olympics) between US & CAN (CAN won). US Cricket was pretty strong in the late 1800s & early 1900s (stronger than many top Cricket nations of today) Bart King was probably the most famous American Cricketer of the time (you can do a quick search on history of Cricket in US). ICC (then Imperial Cricket Conference, now International Cricket Council) not allowing membership to non British Empire nations was probably the biggest reason for the decline of Cricket in countries like US (& ARG, etc) & the other reason is the successful promotion of baseball as an American born sport (baseball is also English, brought to US by English immigrants, oldest ever written reference of baseball is in a 1755 diary of an Englishman William Bray which is also shown in a baseball documentary made by American baseball fans & its clips I saw on the mlb website)
6:32 In Cricket they're Batsman (& Batswoman), batter is the politically correct term. The players with the Ball are Bowlers (historically Bowling was nothing like this, it was similar to Lawn Bowls or Pin Bowling & slowly evolved into what you see now), players in the Field waiting to Catch the Ball are Fielders, the 1 player standing behind the Batsman is the Wicket Keeper who's the only one allowed to wear gloves & Umpires you must know since the same term is used in baseball for the referees.

In baseball you are not allowed to hit the batter. In cricket, that's a strategy. Bowlers who bowl at a steaming pace do bowl a bouncer aiming at the head, in each over to put fear in the mind of the batter.

Two big differences between Baseball and Cricket is the ball in cricket is slightly heavier with a thick seam down the center of the ball compared to baseball. Also in Baseball, the ball doesn't hit the ground so the batter is only looking at the curve and speed, as a batter in cricket is looking at the curve, speed, height of the bounce off the ground and direction of that bouncing ball once contact with the ground has been made. So in Cricket there's alot of instinct involved, as there are so many different variables to contend with, in such a small timeframe. The Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) technique is usually the best mindset when batting and keep your eye on the ball at all times, even to the last millisecond as it passes by. Some batters are so obsessed with this, they watch the ball when it goes to a fielder all the way to the bowler, every time the ball is being bowled. By the way, this takes lots and lots of practice, even when your tired and can't be bothered, this is actually the best time to test what your made of.

The distance between bowler and batter is 22 yards (66 feets or 20.11 meters) because of camera angle it looks like a short distance between bowler and batsman

in cricket you can aim the bowl at the batters head 1 delivery every over, you can do more but it will cost you runs (1 bowl over the shoulder is still a legal delivery). this type of bowling is called bodyline, there is a movie about it. people do die batting and bowling from being hit in the head, recently Phillip Hughes

In baseball if a pitcher hit the batter with a ball, it is not allowed but in cricket bouncers are legal to allowed especially in test type(both team wear white Jersey) of cricket. And in cricket they catch the ball with their bare hands except wicketkeeper, in baseball you can predict the trajectory of the ball while batting like slider, straight ball but in cricket it's all about quick reflexes because it can swing into your body or it can swing outside of your body, some ball bounce alot some are don't, so hit the ball with using appropriate techniques unlike its not just hard swing either bunt the ball. So cricket takes a lot of guts to play it than baseball.

  • @Zippycat444
    @Zippycat444 3 года назад

Most recreational cricket does not involve bouncers, the short pitched bowling you see here. In these clips thebatman has 0.3 seconds from releaseof the ball from 22 yards away to decide what delivery the bowlers has bowled, decide the shot to play or to get out of the way. It is amazing. However fast bowlers do not bowl the boucer aiming at the ribs, heart or head all the time but use it as a surprise ball in many cases where a batsman may be scoring freely or to intimidate a batman who has just come in. Cricket comes in many forms including the pinnacle of the sport ‘The Test Match’ played over five days. It is called a test as it is just that, a test of a man or woman at the highest level of the sport. One other big difference is that cricket fielders (other than the wicket keeper) do not use catching mitts, hands only.

The in's and out's of cricket
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that’s in the side that’s in the field goes out and when he’s out comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him
out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes
    in.
When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.
Sometimes there are men still in and not out.
There are men called umpires who stay out all the time, and they decide when the men who are in are out.
Depending on the weather and the light, the umpires can also send everybody in, no matter whether they’re in or out.
When both sides have been in and all the men are out (including those who are not out), then the game is finished

Let me explain..If you are a fast bowler, 150;160 kph, what you try to do, is intimidate the batsman by bowling short on the line of his body, not every ball, but enough to get him defensive!..If he is hit, it is is generally regarded as the batsmans fault, he has a bat, and should use it or avoid the delivery by ducking or swaying..You have about .4 to .5 of a second to decide! Unlike the fine old English game of 'rounders'..(baseball)..It's a no no to pitch at the batter! But they still do it!

The problem is techniques have become poorer over the decades as batsmen have grown up on dead wickets & medium pace bowling, many batsmen now don't move their feet & don't watch the ball as they duck. Helmets weren't around in the 1970's & weren't worn by many players even in the 1980's & weren't anything like the modern ones protection wise & there weren't the limitations on short pitched bowling-yet they were rarely hit or seriously injured.
