- Episode 5 of Keepers Corner is live! Watto joins me on the sofa as we look back at the action from the penultimate Premier League weekend of football!
We take a look at back at what Andre Onana could’ve done better in Man United’s defeat last week to Crystal Palace, plus the historic save is one of my own - coming in a Watford game against Aston Villa a couple of years ago.
Matz Sels and Dorde Petrovic were both kept busy in the Nottingham Forest v Chelsea match at the City Ground, and there was also an unreal save from Arijanet Muric to deny Pedro Porro in Spurs’ victory over Burnley!
Just to be very clear again…..We aren’t goalie bashing here, we’re just explaining what the goalie could have done differently and discuss if the outcome could’ve been different 🙌🏼

I would say about 70% of the goals Onana lets in, de Gea would have saved.
But the supposed intelligent would say "Oh but Onana better at distribution."

most important is confidence in yourself. mistakes will happen, goals will go in, but you know what you can do and how to save your team to the best of your ability. I’ll never forget what my keeper did for our team you can be a gamechanger.

Hey guys, when I was watching this match I said 'I wonder if Glasner has told the Palace players to shoot at the near post'. Because as well as the Mateta goal and the Olise goal, Edouard also hit the near post with an effort late on with Onana completely flat footed, Hughes even aimed his shot there also. Do you think this is a weakness in Onana's game generally? Afterwards Glasner mentioned that he told Olise to shoot at the near post more in general but do coaches come up with plans against keepers' positioning? And as a goalie, do you ever look at a player and think 'This guy always goes to the far post' and start moving before he shoots etc?
Well I'm a United fan, and if you want me to be brutally honest Onana just hasn't been a good keeper for us. Near-post, long shots, collecting a cross, he's made every blunder you can think of this season. Near post is definitely a weakness, but I'd say just about everything has been his weakness haha. He's come good at times, but as of right now I still have no idea why we binned off de Gea. We don't currently play the football to make use of Onana's distribution anyway
I'm a goalkeeper and these videos are so interesting. They actually help me to improve and think different in certain situations. You guys are class and these videos deserve so much more recognition

When Onana concedes he looks like a tiny man. Little arms. No presence. Basically a left back in goal.
My dad was a keeper when he was younger so now get more of an appreciation of what he was doing. It's a cool series. Can't wait to see more of this :)

Onana too busy trying to look like a stylish goalkeeper than trying to be a good Goalkeeper.
Arguably an issue that permeates through the entire squad at Man U but it's shocking how United as a club which historically has had fantastic keepers have allowed this to happen.
Absolutely banging video though lads. I could listen to Watto on goalkeeping all day.

Questions to Watto and Ben:
Can you try to analyse differences between goalies from different training system and how they do in the game?
I am aware that GK from UK/South America/Europe etc all built and trained differently. I.e The way they recover and get back to their feet. South Americas love to spin on their butt on the ground
Would be interesting to know your view on this.

Ben, fantastic video, really enjoyed every single bit of it. And correct me if I’m wrong, I believe the first goal Onana conceded against Crystal Palace was due to his terrible footwork and he wasn’t able to slide his body out full stretch. He sort of flying down from mid-air. A ManUtd standard goalie should always get near to save these kind of a shot.

Played as a goalie for more years than I can even want to remember, been saying for ages, Onana bends, gets low and hinges all wrong at the hips, I cant think of any real advantage of doing that, however his coach is Hartis, who is WELL past his prime, and brought back by Fergie. I have no idea why he hinges like that, maybe he knows he is poor low and is compensating.
This keeper reminds me of the Barthez days, sure he makes a good save here and there, but the goals conceded between them, are numerous and woulda been stopped by a better purchase
love it, would be cool ( probably mad hard to find though) a comparrison event from similar situations where the positioning / awareness shows correct techniques. i know you're not goallie bashing but you kind of are... showing a similar situation would enhance the evidence imo. again, would be mad hard to find " exact" scenarios. loved it, any young goalkeepers out there... pay attention. wish this show was around when our son played in goal. ( aged 5-18)

I wonder if goalkeeper coaches at a top level get input on transfers for goalies in a meaningful way: like watch a few games and break down the miniscule techniques etc to give their two cents before the club signs the paperwork
Onana transfer is the worst mistake TenHag will ever make. He cost us CL single handedly... First time a keeper did that.

I think the analysis on petrovic is a bit harsh. He def could have collected it and prevented the chance. But the header itself deflects off Gallagher, then the inside of the post. Could have def done better but I'd argue it's unlucky too.

One of the co-commentators on the international broadcast for the Burnley v Spurs game said the age old classic about Porro’s thunderbolt of a goal through the near post;
“I question Muric’s positioning there. You should never be beaten at the near post. I’m sure the goalkeeper is really disappointed at getting beaten through there and I bet the coaching staff will be as well.”
Since watching your channel and hearing way more about football from a keepers perspective, I now know that this pundit line of thinking is a load of bollocks.

It sure is easier in hindsight. It all happens so fast in reality, it's hard to fathom. The goal keepers always get the blame :-)
1 of these has been a gk coach for 20+ years and played at a high level and the other was a top level keeper for many years. They are giving the keepers every benefit of the doubt

Onana’s technique has been dogshit for a long time, yes he will make good saves because of his reflexes but the top goalies like Allisson and Courtois will make them look easy - Onana does everything wrong from a shot stopper perspective (not to mention he’s not been great with his feet)
