I haven’t been able to talk about hockey with my grandpas for a few years since they’ve passed. So it’s great to hear this conversation between you two.
Anyways as an Oilers fan I’m super happy with Woodcroft so far. Tippett has had a great career but he got stubborn and refused to adapt to the ever-changing world of hockey. We needed a change and I think Woodcroft is a great option. If he sucks we won’t have him for a full year and if he’s great then he’s great.
On the terms of goaltending I consider all three of our goalies criminally underrated (not to say they’re great). Our defense under Tippett (ironically) was horrible (he overplayed our forwards so they couldn’t be two-way, and he constantly played Barrie on the top line while gibbing washed veterans the benefit of the doubt). But we have lot of good young d-men so it shouldn’t be a problem for long.
Anyways I’d hate to see Smith and/or Koskinen go, but to get to the next level we need an elite goalie, or wait for a potential Skinner-Konovalov duo (I don’t think either will be elite but together they have the potential to be one of the premier duos, but that’s 2-3 years from now at least). So going after guys who exceptional isn’t gonna solve the issue. For me it’s a waiting game. We wait on our prospects, and if an elite goalie comes along in Free Agency, we jump him!
