Steam Deck Competitors Seem Defeated

- I feel like MSI and ASUS are playing a different game than Valve. They seem to be trying to brute force their handhelds, while Valve goes for a more nuanced and finesse approach. Either way you shake it, if they play games better, and for longer, its going to be very interesting to see what happens with the handheld pc space.

As a Linux user, I'm completely biased in favor of the Steam Deck, but with that disclaimer out of the way, I'll say the big difference is that Valve is a software company. To be fair to all these competitors, they're hardware companies. They know how to make hardware quickly and effectively, ship it out to customers and let the customers worry about fiddling with Windows, overclocking, etc. The idea of creating a handheld gaming device that works well and has the longevity and stability of a console is just not in their wheelhouse.
Do you think Xbox handheld (even if it’s actually a real thing) can be a good device? Not only will it run the console level OS. It will also come from a company that has been making consoles. (At this point Microsoft should just come out with an Xbox OS or windows OS for 3rd party devices)
As windows user, I don't feel need to be worried about fiddling with Windows on my Ally. Most time i feel excatly the same as my steam deck. Both of them can have minor issues when playing some games or running mods, etc. I can't remember the last time I got an error on my Ally or steam deck and I almost play them daily. I don't think steam os can repalce windows at the moment. however, if sony releas a new PSP that plays native PS games, i will drop both of them and buy that device day one.
@@josephmclord maybe, but they are gonna be killing the xbox lol
Reminds me of the battle between Apple and Android, you don’t win Apple users over with hardware but software that works well for a very long time
@josephmclord most likely not.... you saw how they treated there own ip horribly when they don't see monet roll they my give up and abandon it early but valve I trust them more even when they abandon the product, they will still continue to update like the steam controller.
This ai thing reminds me when every company called their product smart. Remember the smart juicer, where you have to use their proprietary juice bags to put in it.
You mean the Juicero.
@ActionGamerAaron yep lol. Has to be in the top 10 worst kickstarters imo.
Dude that's so true hahaha

@@ActionGamerAaron It was an over engineered product. EEVBlog did a teardown and it was criminal how such expensive components were used for something which required not much force to press a juice bad.
I would not buy a mobile PC platform without trackpads.
The reason I am excited for Zotac Zone.
The track pads on the steam deck wound up being more of a game changer than I expected. Literally too.
I never use the track pads.
If new Ally had even one, I would jump on it.
I will not buy one without a trackpad and back buttons. Any game with a camera on the second stick or any game with mouse based UI is waaay more playable with them.

Used all handhelds but sticking with the switch and Steam Deck, steamOS is a game changer.
Two best (non retro) handhelds. Couldn't pay me to get a windows handheld unless they make a proper OS for it
Steam deck is great till you need to play a game that’s not verified for steam deck . I love my steam deck but the asus ally runs all the games I can run my steam deck plus much more !
Even my switch has been collecting dust since getting the SD OLED. I just clicked this video cause it said steam deck lol, I dont follow any more news about new handhelds or anything like that. There is just no need for me personally. I play all the games I want on the deck handheld or docked. Helldivers 2 has been a riot haha. I dont need to play with high graphic settings. I can remote play my ps5 with the deck and that actually got me to dust off the ol ps5 and play it more than I ever did without the steam deck.
SteamOS might work if you only use offline Steam games. The moment you use Online games, Epic, GOG, Ubisoft, EA, Emulators, etc....Steam Deck is a complete mess.
It changes nothing except adding need to fiddle with os just to install the game outside of steam
Got a Steam Deck. Haven't looked back. This thing fixed my issues with PC gaming. Don't plan to play new AAA titles. Cyberpunk is probably my newest game I have and it's verified and runs well. Having the best graphics is not something I care about. I can play my backlog of games on steam or get into some older titles I never played. As a busy dad, it's a win win for me.
Absolutely. Since before the Steam Deck came out I was saying that people who believed that the Deck would be an utter powerhouse were out to lunch.
My expectations were: indies and backlog.
I still ended up playing some higher end games (I have no issues just throwing all graphics to low if I can hit 40fps), or streaming from my now aging but still capable desktop
Got my Deck mainly for Emulation of Retro and single player backlog.

"Yeah, but I can afford this"
It's always been the issue with pc handhelds. Are most of them cool? Yes but they're not worth it, usually clunky with a poor battery life. That's where the steam deck wins. If I listened to myself I'd probably buy one of the overpriced ones but.. they're simply not that great. Raw power isn't everything you look for in a handheld, else you just get a normal computer.

Steam Deck only wins by technically of Steam self-supporting financially through it's game store. Without it, it's the same song and dance with their shit being $1000 or close to it with some UI Hassel.
I think there's a big difference between a Steam Deck and a Windows handheld.
But is there a big difference between the Deck running Windows and other handhelds running Windows?

The Rma nightmare from asus is enough to keep me away. I dont want to fight with a company when something breaks
While the space itself is experiencing a lot of issues, let's just take a minute to celebrate handheld gaming as a whole. The sheer amount of competition is awesome. I can't wait to see it 5-10 years from now.
heck yah I agree. I have a crazy pc rig but I cannot wait until one day the gap can close in on it more to where I can just phase out pc. It will definitely happen! Won't ever truly replace, but the future is exciting here.
@@strated1079 man i wish i was born later so i could properly enjoy that era. In 5-10 years I'll be way too old and busy to be able to enjoy it properly
To be honest it's not the higher performance for me. It's the price, battery life and repairability that is everything to me.
If a handheld's shortcoming is even one of those three I will most likely not even consider it as a real alternative.
Agreed!
The other thing is that even the people who choose these other handhelds over a steamdeck, the vast majority of them will be using steam on said device so it will result in a net increase in steam sales
Exactly. Get the other handhelds that run faster, and use Steam and GamePass on them.
Exactly. These aren't "competition" to Valve. They're an increase to Valve's sales. They knew what they were doing when they kicked off this handheld PC craze. They carved out a price niche that nothing else can compete with, and they will continue to stay in that niche even when a Deck 2 is released, because they don't need to be the most powerful. If someone wants more power, Valve has no problem with them buying a Windows PC from Ayaneo, Ayn, Asus, MSI, Lenovo, Zotac, because it'll still mean profits for Valve either way. More funding to put into better development of future Decks without needing to worry about failure.
Actually valve wasn't the one who kicked off this so-called PC handheld craze. It was Nintendo Switch's popularity that spawned so many of these handhelds coming out of the woodwork.
@@PBJA89 Not really. The Steam Machines started coming out in 2015, and a handheld one was planned. Then valve saw the public response to too much hardware variety combined with SteamOS's inability to play Windows games, and pulled the plug on that handheld until they could come back with a better product. The Switch's release in the meantime was kind of a coincidence; Valve was working on their own handheld gaming PC since before Ninty released their Switch.
Not to mention, the Switch isn't a PC. They kind of appeal to a different audience. Companies like GPD had already been releasing their own handheld PCs for years, but the Steam Deck was the first one with enough raw gaming power to attract the masses, kicking off the craze of *other* companies developing handheld PCs as well.
@@PBJA89 calling the switch a handheld PC instead of a console is, at best, disingenuous and at worst outright dishonest
sold my steamdeck bought a legion go and happy with it
Same here
same
Same!
I think those 2 are the best options, the Steamdeck is king but if you have the extra buck and want something more the Legion GO is the way to go.
Same but with the ROG Ally. It’s nice not having to go through proton to get games to work.
I sold my Steam Deck for a Legion Go.
I wanted to play games that aren't playable on Steam OS. I wanted more performance. I also wanted a USB4 port for an egpu.
I'm fine booting into Playnite and not bothering with Legion Space. I'm fine with using 3d printed grips to improve the ergonomics of the Legion Go.
Is the experience on the Legion Go as optimized as on the Steam Deck? Definitely not. However, the Steam Deck does not provide the experience that I'm looking for, and the Legion Go does.
Thats ultimately what it came down to for me, and I'm happy with my decision.
That sounds perfect.
Same for me, in January I was for the lookout for a handheld because I don't play as much in my Computer (Zephyrus G14). I saw the SD and the Ally and was hesitant but when I saw the Legion Go I just knew that was the One, got it and haven't looked back since then. I just improve battery live by having a powerbank, because I play mostly in bed.
Same but for the Ally X. Just waiting on it to show up. Need windows for literally everything outside steam. Linux has been hard to learn when your kinda a noob and used windows your whole life
I put bazzite os on my legion go and it's amazing. It's like I have a high performance steam deck and it's dual boot so I still have windows so I can play other games steam os can't
Same. I love my Legion go 🥰
GPD has been the most successful competitor to the Steam Deck because:
- They actually created this market with the GPD Win 1 in 2015. They were actually the market leader before Valve entered and will always have the First Mover Advantage.
- They offer a form factor that neither Valve nor other handheld gaming PC manufacturers offer: Clamshell.
- No matter the model and form factor, the GPD Win lineup has never abandoned a dedicated keyboard, which really helps with the experience of using Windows on a handheld.
- A dedicated physical switch to change the joysticks between mouse mode and gamepad mode is still a GPD-exclusive feature to this day.
GPD really needs more attention and love.
GPD may have been the initial creator, but Valve made it an actual market and not just some overpriced hobbyist group. Innovation always evolves on the backs of others. iPhones and Android lead the smart phone industry, but old rotary phones we're the first. Does that mean old rotary phone companies were the most successful?
The one plus size is GPD and Aya and some of these other companies are actually pricing their devices at competitive prices now and not gouging the consumers so much. Too bad they release a new product like every 2 months. They are going to be the Blackberry of cell phones.
What is gpd
@@evilcrashbandicootthetouho2753 A crowfunded gaming handheld. Search on Google or Wikipedia "GPD Win"
None of your mentioned points support them being the most successful competitor.
But you have one thing, Valve is the most successful competitor to GPD.
GPD has to provide different form factors because they can't compete on OS.
I still pick my Ally for all modern games. The steamdeck has been left to emulation.
im not touching anything with windows that's for sure
I also prefer my ROG Ally for emulation as well since it I’m not the biggest fan of Emudeck or emulation station. I playnite as my emulation front end

@@shto4782 Honestly, there's a reason 98% of gamers run Windows and not Linux. Games are designed for Windows and work best on Windows. On the Steam Deck with Linux, some games work, but many do not. Getting another game launcher to work is also not simple. Steam Deck is kind of like an Apple device, it tries to lock you into the Steam ecosystem.
I feel like with the all the handheld PCs it's just history repeating itself the Sega Game gear was more powerful and had a colour screen but everyone still bought the OG gameboy because of the battery life
Jim carrey: ohhh, I'm gonna getcha..its the CLAW!!
Out of all the competitors I’d probably grab the Ally x,but I’m holding off for that rumored Xbox handheld
That's been my thing. I bought the original gpd win. It was pretty cool.
But I want to be part of an ecosystem that relies on my long term support and, subsequently, will actually bother to help if things go bad.
Valve
Xbox
Sony or
Nintendo.
No one else can promise that.
Rumoured new PSP might be an option also
Xbox is never going to release a handheld.
I don't understand why one would want a Xbox handheld, assuming it would be like a console and locked to Microsofts store. Freedom to do anything you want is the best thing with the current PC handheld.
I think it's all but certain the X/S is the end of the line for the Xbox as we know it. I could see MS keeping the brand alive for a Steam-style PC ecosystem, and I could see them releasing a Steam Deck-style handheld to go along with it... but even if it's a great piece of hardware, why wouldn't I just install Steam on it instead? The big issue with Xbox is that the hardware is supposed to drive users towards their MS Store/GamePass ecosystem and it hasn't done that at anywhere near the scale they need to actually turn a profit. Abandoning the current console approach to directly take on Steam just seems like throwing good money after bad.
I preordered the Ally X. Got a SD OLED on release and the Ally much later. The SD is really good on the go but it lacks performance on the newest titles. The Ally got the performance but lacks the mobility because of the battery.
And now there is the Ally X. The best of both worlds. It has the performance if you need it, it has the battery to play as long as the steam deck (at 15-17W). It can play anything because it has windows. The SD is still the better experience because of SteamOS, but the Ally X will be the better Device…and that’s a fact 🤷♂️
I’m waiting for Lenovo’s response for the Ally X cause the Ally X seems to be the winner. I really like the LeGo’s screen so I went with that after I sold my Ally.
Gotta say that, for me, the two biggest selling points are 1) can I play all my games easily (including Game Pass and PS5 streaming) and 2) Screen Size for immersion.
That said, I ditched my Steam Deck (LCD) for the Legion Go and haven't had to look back because I haven't had a single issue with it. If you haven't tried the 8.8" inch screen (a difference of 6.5 square inches), give it a whirl before you choose.
I agree with you which is why these handhelds haven't replace my gaming laptop, even my 7 year old gaming laptop can outperform these handhelds. I prefer a 17" screen over these smaller screens. Handhelds are mostly just to play on the go when there is no plug in. If there's a plug in then I will take my laptop.
For me, I am getting a Legion Go. I was thinking of a ASUS,but after all the crap they have done I will make a hard pass. MSI I was mixed on. Now why don't I get a Steam Deck. I don't use Steam. I get all my games on GOG. Yes, I don't get the latest games, that is why I have a PS5. I am mainly a single player, so not live service,MMOs. Just single player games. I also love that all games on GOG are DRM-Free. And the Legion Go, because it's Windows, I can play my games, and don't have to be on line to install them.
I have one legion go and steam deck and legion go is a better handheld, the screen is not even comparable.
The Legion Go is always forgotten in these comparisons for some reason, and is one the best handhelds with the least issues. Pair with Bazzite and you got yourself a better Steam Deck.
@@victor1882because the legion go is too expensive but is worth, is the best you can have, if you choose "cheap" the go for SD, if you want the top tier then go for lenovo, between them are fighthing the Ally and Claw for who have the best of both extremes

Whatever happened to that Alienware UFO handheld? It was announced years ago, I think.
2020, little bit before lockdown.
It’s surprising since we saw it before the Steam Deck.
I believe it was meant to demo Iris Xe Graphics, and it’s possible Intel focused on their GPU card after the sudden demand from lockdown.
Only reason I can think why Alienware didn’t continue with the UFO concept was on a mixture of bespoke hardware and potential cannibalism from their laptop line.
I first bought a steam deck and loved it.
But i later bought the rog ally z1 extreme. I have to say i now exclusively play the ally, since all games are compatible with it.
The UI is pretty solid considering its using Windows 11.
Great summary of all the devices and exactly what's going on with these companies. I've yet to buy a handheld of this nature, I was a day away from buying an oled steamdeck when I saw the announcement and the specifications for the Ally X. I really hope the Ally X performs well, otherwise I will have delayed my purchase of a steamdeck by another month. They sell out within a day of restocking where I live, so it's very difficult.
I bought a Legion Go 3 months ago. My steam deck only gets used when my wife wants to play a pc game with me lol. No hate toward my deck. Its been a great device! But I much prefer my LeGo now for handheld gaming. My Switch sits on the dock unused day in and day out lmao
I have the Ally and Steam Deck and I find all of the chest beating about the Steam Deck weird. There are some quirks with Windows, but some real hardware limitations with the Steam Deck too. It’s way more of a mixed bag than some channels make it seem.
I feel the same about all these handhelds as they are all have hardware limitations when it comes to laptops and desktops. I like the handheld on the go but why would I play a game like Ghost of Tsushima on a small screen with small speakers when I can play it on a 65" TV hooked up to a sound system?

Agreed. I think it addresses every one of the legitimate criticisms of the original unit. Hopefully a better repair and return policy will address the remaining outstanding issues!
There are so many games in my Steam backlog that won't even launch on my Steam Deck, that alone made me get a Windows handheld instead. But I use my Deck for mainly emulation now.
The target audience for Steam Deck seems to be a specific audience that plays single-player Steam games. And Steam Deck actually works fine for that. But if you want to play online games, use Epic/GOG/Ubisoft/EA, you are in big trouble with a complete lack of native support on Linux like SteamOS.
I spent way more time on ProtonDB trying to get my games to work on Steam Deck than I ever did fiddling with Windows on my Ally. Proton support is much better than it was a year ago, but there are still thousands of games that aren't supported and most of them don't even use anti-cheat.

Got the LeGo a couple months ago where I’ve been away from home, and don’t have my PC. It was between that, or the steamdeck OLED, and I was very close to getting the steamdeck. Went with the LeGo because I’m almost always near an outlet anyways, I’m familiar with Windows, there’s no compatibility issues with any game I want to play, and emulation’s a breeze.
Not upset with my decision at all. Haven’t been able to put it down. If windows makes a portable OS similar to the deck, provide’s some upgradability, and a better battery? The deck will have some serious competition.
A new competitor entered the field: ZOTAC zone is the next challenger
I’m saving up right now to buy an OLED 1Tb steam deck, mainly for emulation, but also for steam games, any games I won’t be able to play on there, I have a pc and a ps5. I’m so excited to be able to order it soon!
Personally I recommend a 512gb OLED and replace the SSD with a 1tb yourself. Ends up being around the same price, potentially cheaper if you get a good deal on the SSD. Why? Bc OLED is vastly superior on a glossy screen
Is it? That’s not sarcastic, I’ve never had either. And is that the only difference, does the other come with a case? And I’ve never opened any tech, although I would love to, is that pretty easy or how would it be on a scale from 1-10 also I really appreciate u telling me this.

my oled steam deck is already quite heavy. i wouldn't want anything heavier than that. it's uncomfy to hold chilling in bed. so sometimes i grab the switch because it feels like nothing compared to the deck.
Honestly, the increase in weight from the ROG Ally to the X is pretty minimal, I'm betting if balanced right an 80Wh Battery will be fine.
I heard they made improvements in weight reduction in order to keep the weight down with the extra battery. It's just a few ounces heavier than the LCD Deck.
Ally X . Atleast till steam deck 2 comes out . Its comfortably more powerful and has a crazy good battery . Warranty issues should be fixed now that it was been kind of exposed
Asus warranty issues have been around for years. It’s nothing new. Even the GamersNexus video references that they are reporting a repeat of a similar warranty complaint from the year prior
On the one hand, as a legion go user I'm as that you don't mention the Legion Go as a competitor in the handheld space, but considering how much time you spent dunking on Asus and MSI, I'm glad you don't have beef with them, hahaha
I remember the Gameboy with a monochrome screen dominating the Game Gear and other color display competitors years ago.
Steam Deck just doing its own thing.
Love my Logitech-G Cloud. Quiet, Cool, Emulates on the road, streams games at home. It is just enough for me, and that's perfect.
I have seen people being pretty happy with it. The main reason the Logitech is interesting to me is that it is super lightweight and has massive battery life (because it doesn't need to render locally). Yet it can still do emulation on the device. I wish more devices focused on weight and battery life, the Steam deck and Lenovo are massive, I don't like that.
The Claw 2 might be pretty good since its going to use Lunar Lake. Which looks pretty dope for low power and it actually has all the hardware you need for the good XESS which meteor lake did not.
I have a Legion Go I love it. I replaced my desktop with it and a dock. I haven't played this many games in a long time. You know the more i use my Legion Go the less i think i want a "Console" experience. I kind of like the that its a PC 1st handheld. The only console experience i want is driver updates in 1 unified package but with Legion Space its all in a single menu anyway so its not too bad. Otherwise I like having quick access to the browser and onboard keyboard with the ability to minimize/maximize browser tabs/apps and steam desktop mode (not big screen).
I can't wait for the day these devices can become as thin as the Nintendo switch or tablets.
I'll believe it when I see it, Intel has been struggling with power to performance for years.
@@NerdNest Yeah Lunar Lake better be everything they said because Microsoft seems tired of waiting and the big ARM push with Snapdragon is a direct attack on Intel. Lunar Lake is their answer.

@@NerdNest They have two "new" things this time - top of the line (ish) manufacturing node aka no longer being on 10nm++++ when AMD is on N5 and Apple on N3. So now they're on par with the best. Also they now have the RAM on the chip, which does help with power consumption. And in general seems to be focused / balanced for low power. Like only having 4P + 4E cores with not hyperthreading, that is a pretty aggressive (read: low) number of cores. Oh, and ditching HT apparently also helps a bit with power consumption, when you're not on 100% load (or near it). (just remembered, MSI Claw has 6P and 8E and 2 LPE cores. LL will have basically half the cores and on a better node. And not claiming insane performance upgade.... well not on the CPU anyways. That has to help.
Sooo, yeah, we still have to wait to be sure, but so far it looks quite good. I really hope they don't jinx it this time. I mean, Meteor Lake wasn't / isn't that bad, it basically got them to be on par with AMD's Zen 4. But it was late, a bit buggy initially, and clearly below the hype. But it is a chip that you can use and have a long battery life, if the device is configured for that. Not to the level of the chip that Steam Deck has (which is more optimized for 9W, while MTL and Z1 are more for 15W). Lunar Lake is apparently tuned for 17W, which is more than 15W for MTL, but that 17W now also includes the RAM. Sooo, it might still not be as good as Steam Deck on REALLY low power (10W or lower), but with a 80Wh battery, it should be good, it should be able to reach 8h of light (but not minesweeper light) gaming. I hope even more.
I can't believe that now a 700 grams or a bit lower device can have a 80Wh battery now. Ally X doesn't even have an OLED which Valve showed that takes up less space and weight, and also consumes less, usually. If it wasn't for the 100Wh limit for the airplanes, I think that my almost 8 year old laptop that's a bit over 4kgs, if it would be a new laptop made today, with no DVD, but the same footprint and the same weight, I could probably house 400Wh. Insane!
Oh, one last thing - MSI announced the Claw 2 (not going to bother saying that excessively stupid name), but I think we're several months away from it being released. And it does solve the first one's problems (which, to an extent should get better / decent as the drivers and firmware mature, but I don't think it will ever be better than Z1 extreme). The Claw 2, having a much better chip I think is more comparable with an Ally 2. And I wouldn't be surprised to see an Ally 2 being released early next year (say, 3-6 months after Claw 2) with a Zen 5 chip similar with Z1 Extreme. Still, your point stands - that the Claw buyers almost being told in their face that they were beta testers can't be a trust-inducing move.
The minor AI rant was gold 😂 Love it. Thanks for decluttering some of my brain cells
The steamdeck is the coolest thing I've ever owned. I was out of town for a little over a week, had boys game night with my Xbox controller, on the TV just like I would at home on my Xbox. I browsed the web and downloaded things with a keyboard and mouse just like I would at my desk and I watched plex from anywhere in the house like I would on my phone but the second I try to play a game unplugged... Its dead. I can play 2-3 matches of Rogue Company and it's dead. That's 45 mins. It's an old game! One of my friends that plays with us is on a 1st Gen ps4.
After I bought the Legion Go and set up dual boot with Bazzite OS, I never wanted to touch the Steam Deck again. Gimmicks are a big part of what make a portable device worth it, and basically now I have a better Steam Deck with detachable controllers and better screen but with worse battery life
My thoughts exactly.!!! Even if the battery life is worse than Steam Deck, the screen makes up for it!!! Lenovo should have provided, an "official" Linux Distro as an alternative. (Manjaro would jump at the chance to make a version of its distro for the Go).
the Lenovo Legion Go is amazing, but a lot of these products do seem a little lazy
Lenovo has been updating the Go for months now. I wonder if there will be a revision model this year.
@@thundergato84 Would love to see what a more streamlined, but upgraded one could do - ie. one without the detachable controllers, and an OLED screen.
They're all lazy
Insanely high resolutions and refresh rates (that you'll never use), RGB, higher end hardware. Poor design choices
Power efficiency is what makes a handheld superior, not 'muh power'
Just bcuz a handheld can handle 2k+ resolution and/or 144fps, doesn't mean it should. What isn't going into performance is going into battery
The neglection of batteries and the greedy desire to have impractically high end specs and RGB is what kept PC handhelds completely irrlevant and obsolete for the past decade
They refuse to understand that handhelds are portable-first. You're just left with a useless brick that canlt do what it was designed to do well at all: being portable. You're constantly tethered to the wall
Got a SDeck Oled on the way, I feel like I won’t really use it but we will see, mainly thinking about older games and emulation.
I'm also having trouble picking which handheld to buy, rn I'm holding off and waiting for allyx's release, and if it's as good as asus says it to be then I'd buy it.
Steamdeck though... there's something just so peaceful with knowing once your deck arrives you can just download a game and start playing, with ally on the other hand you'll have to setup your microsoft account yet again, download all the software you need, setup your gmail accounts your launchers and tinkering with windows so it can run games without hitch..
Jeeez ☠️
Steam Deck ease of use 100%
Ally Powerhouse on the go but it's a pc in disguise of a handheld
@@capnmoby9295Also im not playing newer titles on an portable because i already have and PS5 and Gaming PC for that same reason why i dont play third party games on the Switch lol
AAAs and graphically intense games in general are just bad on any handheld
That's the top less-than-1% of the entire PC library
That other half, the 99%+, performance won't even be a concern. All you gotta worry about is pulling as few watts as possible
I keep my intensive/large games on PC. My Deck is for literally errything else. 2D/sidescrollers, JRPGs, visual novels, OG games, etc. These games consume 95% of my playtime
I have seen the XPG "NIA" handheld pc and it looks very promising with many things that the others do not offer
You are tripping
I think the ROG Ally is on top of the PC Handheld world and steam deck is the budget friendly device...just that simple I think most are just fans of steam OS
Yea is just fans. But they all know the ally is hands down the best handheld pc ever made.
The problem with steamdeck users is that they put a lot of money customizing the sd to improve it, and in about a years time ASUS releases the ally and knocks it out the park. They became salty and ran out of excuses.
But this ally x is about to take over. A steamdeck 2 would probably be really good to, but no more Linux for me after owning the SD
Unless you prefer a bigger screen then you go to the Legion Go or the Ayaneo Kun.
@@Andy-xn1lz yeah I am currently saving up the money to snag myself a Legion Go and should hopefully have it by the end of the year so let's see if they put out a refresh or not by then. Several reasons I am looking at the Legion Go over the Ally SD card being a HUGE one for me I don't want my 1tb card getting killed. Trackpad on the device is another along with mouse mode with the right controller. Being able to remove the controls for couch/bed gaming on the big screen is nice as well
@@firstclaims30 why handheld that is not optimized to properly work at lower TDP is the best? They all have pros and cons and it deepends on your use case and priorities.
Lenovo Legion Go is on top, SD on the budget market and Ally on the middle
The dofference is Valve is treating their handheld console like a console, the other brands are treating them like Pcs that are "trash" after half a year of tech advancement.
i hear you Dude... constantly hearing about A.I. and its getting annoying... thank you for the informative and enjoyable video...im literally a new subscriber today... also i like many of us are very concerned with the Asus return to manufacturer service/repair situation... i love Asus hardware but last 1-2 years after seeing numerous reports of poor to awful repair experience with Asus im just glad i do my own repairs etc. i repair and mod Gameboys mostly specializing in the Gameboy Advance (GBA) but i work on consoles and laptops as well... thanks again Dude... im just going to watch some of your older vids... and the Steam Deck is still King! 👑
Had a conversation with my roommates about the Steam Deck since I’m planning to get one for myself. They keep telling me that the Steam Deck is the iPhone of the handheld PC with it’s unique OS, while the competition are running on Windows making them the Android of the handheld PC
Apples vs. Oranges
Ehh. A bit missleading. The "problem" with iphone and its unique OS is that its hard to customize / modify. SteamOS is a linux distro, that even offers the desktop environment. You can literally do ANYTHING on linux and Steam encourages you to.
Microsoft Store strives to lock users, deprecate "side loading" - convert experience to smartphone walled garden, collect 15% on each sale. That's iPhone.
SteamOS is Linux, it even ships KDE Desktop, plenty of applications in repo, mainlined drivers. If Valve misbehaves you can switch to fork - that's Android, GrapheneOS on Fairphone.
Your friends aint too smart.
Comparing SD with iPhones just because they're "uniques" is a total mistake, just to start you can put Windows on the steam deck if you want, but you can't even put stock Android on an iPhone
I see plenty of people loving their ally and saying it is better than the steam deck. Considering there’s already a new one that solved the only issues people had with the prior one I’d say ASUS is doing a great job. Only issue they have is with warranty, but that’s a company issue, not an issue localized to a single device
Exactly
I have my ally for 6 months and I never had a problem or issue with it same with my brother in law. I do love it because I can play any game I throw at it and it just works on any other platform and in 1080p.
exactly and that is just in the USA. Europe has laws in place where asus cannot pull the crap they pull with you guys. that is a US issue lol
@@nathanjuan6042 Yeah they are talking about the crappy customer service from ASUS you ghet in the US co's they don't have consumer rights laws like we do in Europe. The warranty and RMA is fine here.
@@Steelninja77Same, here in Norway I don't think twice about that stuff. If something stops working within warranty and it's not user error it's a definite repair or replacement. Often replacement.
Having an ROG Ally and Steam Deck I can easily say the Ally is far better for most uses. Just boot it in Steam Big Picture. Perfection.
I ONLY got the Ally due to the Steam Deck not being compatible with so many games.
Well said. In addition to good customer service, good build quality, good battery life and good performance what I think many of these companies outside of Valve and even Nintendo are forgetting or just plain ignoring is price. Seriously, my Steam Deck is great value for money. With it I can play PS4 and PS5 games for less than a PS5 and do it on the go. I don't know where everyone else is getting their money, but video gaming is not the only thing I have to pay for and when these companies try to brute force more performance and more battery life with inefficient hardware it usually means more money.
With inflation, the recession and everything in-between, I'm just priced out of these new handhelds. I am perfectly fine with my LCD Steam Deck, my Switch OLED and my Analogue Pocket. Before I even think about any of these new pc handhelds I would get a good quality controller for my Samsung Galaxy S23+ phone to stream games from my Xbox and for Xbox Game Pass and use the money I save to buy more games. Keep up the great work.
MSI Claw 8 AI is the most exciting handheld among all which is equivalent to next years amd handhelds!
Yeah Lunar Lake looks great.
I hope the new intel chips are all that they say they are.
Valve made all the right hardware choices.
1. Really good ergonomics (not chasing Switch's cramped design).
2. Balanced specs (CPU isn't overkill vs GPU, and there isn't more RAM than you would reasonably use).
3. Trackpads for much better mouse control options.
4. 4 grip button
And the OLED version massively upgraded the display to be one of the better handheld ones, which was a weakness of the OG Deck.
Don't agree on the ergonomics. The 8-directional D-pad on the Rog Ally is superior to that of the Steam Deck, especially if you play any oldschool game, platformer or fighting game.
@@sophieedel6324 I meant in terms of positioning everything in the right place. It was the right choice to put joysticks side by side with buttons, rather than arranging everything vertically like the Switch.
There's a delicious irony to using Linus as a tech source in a video where you discuss Gamers Nexus's take-down of Asus.
I don't know how well it performs, nor am I going to test it myself (seeing as I don't have any of the other handhelds), so my question is:
Does anyone know if putting Nobara Steam Deck edition on one of the competitors will create a more powerful system with the Steam deck OS? (let's ignore the battery problem for just a second 😂)
I'm genuinely curious.
ROG Ally X is the new king.I own the SD OLED it is great but it really lacks raw power now. If Valve doesn’t announce the new SD at the end of the year, I would have to switch sadly
I'm very excited for the Ally X, them brute forcing while Valve goes for finesse might work.
All PC handheld are behind in performance when it comes to current triple A titles. The best way to get performance out of these handhelds with demanding games is by remote play. Even the Logitech G Cloud can do that.
This is the snarkiest NerdNest video ever. 😂
Honestly I’m here for it 🤣
Wasn’t the plan. I just started writing.
So anyways, I started blastin
@@NerdNestI mean, but, you're not wrong though. They don't get it. They probably overcharge for the change as well.
Just so nothing is lost in translation, we want Steam competitors to be successful, competition drives every aspect in an improved handheld gaming experience to the user. I'm all for gamers being the winners in the end. Nice Vid, always appreciate your content!
And that’s what really grinds my gears…
As someone who owned nearly every single handheld starting from GPD 4000 Ryzen chips to One X Player X1 + Ally + Deck OLED + L GO.....
I gotta say the ultimate one is Ally X even though I don't have it yet, but Ally was near perfection to me and only battery life + extra USB C I needed it from it and that's what it got....
For all guys complaining about windows use Emudeck in windows and you will get near Deck like experience in addition to all games supported...
And to top all of this the Frame generation technology like Lossless app or AMD makes huge difference, yes they have issues but 3 times fps far more beneficial
Your “ultimate” just reflects the latest upgrade device. Ally X makes improvement in all the key areas but should be compared to gen 2 LeGo and other devices for true benchmark. If I was buying a new device now and did not need the larger screen of the LeGo of Kun, then AllyX is the obvious choice unless you want to take advantage of the discounted Gen 1 Ally
@@Andy-xn1lz But Ally X is not having next gen parts or something it's just that Ally had one huge weakness and that the space inside it was poorly utilised, now though I don't see any other company capable of making a Handheld at this battery size and weight.
They will be in a league of their own for awhile, 60Kwh is what's expected but we got 80 which is highest ever known to a handheld
They managed that because Asus know to build custom sized parts than source it from suppliers, Zotac for example is releasing after Ally X yet have much worse battery as leaked
And what sets Ally apart of others is that it have the best software I used so far, updates as easy as Deck, no crashing or anything unexpected, customised properly giving enough controls to the user
As a Steam Deck OLED user, valve still need to fix the dock and wifi 6e. 6GHz wifi and WPA3 still break Linux on the Steam Deck OLED and it’s been over 6months since release. Support has acknowledged they know there’s an issue, but they still haven’t fixed.
Also, as someone who has a Steam Deck and doesn’t have a windows handheld, this is NOT a console like experience. Games still require the same amount of tinkering as my windows desktop to get good performance (ie allow tearing, image settings, fps profiles, controller profiles, etc). There are still a lot of bugs, I’ve had to re-image once already due to a black screen, and again, wifi 6e is still broken.
Still loving my deck OLED and loved the original, but it kills me when people say it’s more “console like”. It’s about as console like as every other launcher like armory crate
Edit: Also just need to put out there, like many others, I got 2 OLED models with dead pixels prior to getting a defect-free panel. I preordered in Nov 2023 and it took until mid January 2024 with all the warranty stuff. Yes, valve took care of it, but they also tried to convince me to keep a panel with dead pixels saying it “didn’t impact the user experience”. Just food for thought. Still miles better than whatever the hell asus is doing though
No offense but dead pixels to a certain number is really non issue per every monitor sold in the past 25 years. Its also more console like than windows, 1000x better experience.
@@jonathont5570 I mean, it was bright red in the middle of the screen so hard to avoid.
Also, when you need to side load anything not on steam (which most users will need to watch a RUclips tutorial to download anything not on steam), anti cheat doesn’t work on half of the games, and you need to optimize settings for every program, it feels the same as a windows desktop.
The only thing considerably more “console” like are the settings, overlays (which most windows handhelds seem to have), and the store.
Thanks for mentioning Asus warranty issue, it's pretty well known across us geeks but not the masses so i appreciate any exposure of it.
Nice to hear you cutting loose a tad and saying the things we are all surely thinking - authenticity is a rare commodity and too often traded away for short term gain. My judgement is that Nerdnest and related contributors simply have higher standards. Keep it up.
The problem with the steam deck is that it isn't strong enough to run helldivers 2 and many other new games!
We NEED a new far more powerful steam deck!
...with shit battery life, lol.
If Steam somehow collaborated with Asus to create a compatible SteamOS on the ROG Ally X, that would be great. But then, one can only hope.
Yeah steamOS was the only reason I went with steam deck, I sometimes prefer it over my gaming pc because “windows”.
You can intall Chimera OS on the ROG alley
@@Tucanazo69not ideal
The goal is to have a SteamOS package that can freely be used by everyone, from personal users to OEMs. It's not there yet, but it's reasonable to see a near future where lots of these manufacturers build handhelds specifically around SteamOS.
Ew please no. Steamos is only good until you need to leave handheld more and install other game launcher or side game. Then you are in for a ride.
I use windows on my gameing laptop, but mainly play on PS5 or Switch. Now with the Deck Oled I get the console experience, play my ps5 games and steam games, but also the OS is pretty neat and I am liking it so much.
The rest is neat. The trackpads eclipse all other handhelds and controllers though. You already said it, but Deck’s trackpads are insanely versatile.
The hate is real..
Would you all please add one "bigger number better" guy on the Nerd Nest. I loved the Steam Deck for what it was.. but I can't do shitty, sub-30 fps, low graphics forever..
No hate, I want them to succeed. Right now....they aren't.
Yep, no interest in these. Legion Go 2 will probably be a different story.
Steam deck 2 will probably be a different story,
Legion go with steam deck controls + oled.
I bet Valve will release something like SteamDeck SE - with boosted SoC on it, that could run latest games like Alan Wake 2. And double a battery cap.
And after that they can start work on SteamDeck2 on ARM. (mainly proton work x86 -> to > ARM layer).... may be some SteaMachine in between .
I love my steam deck, butt. I had the same issue with valve. I had a joystick drift issue, they told me the unit was unrepairable. Unit had water damage, etc. I got the unit back, cleaned a connector ribbon, bought the haptic sticks, and that has been a year ago and been using my unrepairable Steam Deck…….😂
How can the Claw be “essentially” an Ally clone when it has a completely different chipset? In fact the only thing it has in common with the Ally is the chassis and Windows.
On top of that, the Steam deck is increasingly struggling to run newer games. The ROG X should get around 3.5 hours of battery life. Which means better performance and similar battery life as a Steam Deck.
not really because windows sucks at battery management. so do not expect long battery.

I will say with the new zotac handheld on the horizon. I may actually look into that if there is a ram upgrade available (or at least a better sku). I just need trackpads and the zotac delivers.
It's all about the Oled screen on the Steam Deck..it is amazing
My biggest problem with companies pushing out so many handhelds is that no handheld ever gets the attention it really needs. Another problem is that people tend to fall into buyers remorse or holdback. Buy now? Or wait 2 months for the new model to be announced.
This is a nice opinion video. There are a lot of factors why id pick up my ally over my deck. And one is weight, so when you say "imagine a steam deck with an 80wh battery" I'm picturing a dumbbell weight.
Everyone is waiting for the deck 2, but MSI, Asus, gdp, zotac, and more are actively making updated hardware.
Whenever I see these 1080p + sized screens, I'm reminded again that these companies don't understand what handhelds are all about.
Same goes for gaming laptops. You got 4k screens being paired with 4060 laptop GPUs. Like, wut?
I have a steam deck oled but still in the market for a windows handheld. The problem is once the power and battery is there looking steam deck 2 probably comes out too and ill end up getting that instead.
What the hell is AI gonna do for a gaming device anyway? The fans already ramp up and down depending on heat, so I don't see what the AI will do for performance. Is it gonna assist with aiming?
I've been happy with my steam deck MOST of the time. docking and mapping controllers sometimes gets buggy. my brother is letting me get his rog ally, so i'll at least get to see what the other side is like soon.
Loved seeing that lunar lake requires a minimum of 2 thunderbolt 4 ports. That is one good thing about any handheld with a lunar lake cpu announced
It’s funny that we are not seeing more Linux based competitors, windows are just swinging at the air constantly missing the target 😂
Great video! I think a lot of people have gotten one sided with their takes on these devices. For me, it’s always been:
great performance + phenomenal software/hardware support from not only the company but the community as well
vs
Greater performance + mediocre software/hardware support.
I think it’s so much more to it than just saying “XYZ has a bigger screen, faster chip, etc.” but how’s the software support and everything else outside of that?
You have got the key in the efficiency point: even with a 80wh battery, if you are attached to the 15 tdp in order to equals the performance of the deck at 10 tdp or lower, you are going to be consuming an average of 25 total watts for the bast mayority of 3d games, an that means 80/25= 3.2h in the best scenario even with the 80wh, but that is only to equal the deck performance, cuz if you want to get better performance you have to go with 20tdp, wich are 35w total wats, so 80/35=2.2h, so in reality you are going to move between 2 and 3h with the X.
And that is specially relevant when with the efficency of the oled you can play at +30fps at the bast mayority of games at a 10tdp or LOWER wich is imposible in those other handhelds, so the total consumption of the oled in the 90% of 3d games can go from 9 to 16 total wats, wich in a 50wh battery that means 3 to 5.5 hours, and ONLY the most demanding ones will require a 20-23 total wats wich gonna give you 2.2hours.
And that is the key of the efficiency of the Steam deck, that allows it to have more battery life than the others even if they have much bigger battery.
I picked up the legion go and been really happy with it especially with the latest drivers
Its my first time running into your channel/ video uploads, i was caught by suprise i thought you were Michael Ironside from his late 30's early 40's 😅 with a little pinch of David Cross from some angles 😅
As soomeone who got the ally z1extreme on christmas and sold it cause didin't used it i will say that i would have not sold it if it had twice the battery life. The console was good but that battery life was a real deal braker. It's a thinkere's device and to have it setted up perfectly just to get 1.5 hours of pure gaming was absolutely a waste of time. The fact that with that double battery life you can get 3 hours at a decent TDP (performance) makes it feel like an acceptable reason to really have the device when it comes in handy, because at the end of the day you want your handheld to play on the go.
I'm gonna wait till all the bad launch units are out the door then pick a rog ally x up close to the holidays
Same. I'll get it on sale or an open box at Best Buy.
I originally had a Steam Deck. I got it for myself for getting my nusring degree at 44. I had to sell it when we moved and were tight on cash. After getting stabilized, I got an ROG Ally Z1X on 100 bucks discount. I've had no problems with it, and some games get netter performance esp in emulation, but windows drives me nuts. I love the steam deck. But.... Im happy enough with steam big picture on the Ally. Im not spending the money to upgrade bc stuff is expensive r now man. I like the ally a lot, and LOVE the Steam Deck, but not enough to sell and rebuy ANOTHER handheld. Thanks for the great content, man! And ty for your service as a teacher!
