I just want to add, if you are a menstruating woman there is an additional cause. Ovulation and periods cause water retention in lots of woman, and swelling in some. Plot your cycle and match it up to your weight fluctuations. The result might surprise you!

I wish I had seen this video five months ago when I started my weight loss journey. I’ve always been obese and on this particular day I woke up and decided I’m going to start going to the gym at 5 AM every morning and count calories and I’m gonna lose weight and be skinny and my life will be perfect. I cannot tell you how depressed and frustrated I was those first few months where the scale is barely moving. I had no understanding of how all these things affect weight. I just thought it was as simple as eat less and you’ll lose weight every day. I had to throw my scale in the trunk of my car to stop myself from obsessively weighing in every morning. I was driving myself crazy. But somehow through the disappointment and feelings of failure I’ve stuck to it and have lost 30 pounds in five months. It’s been slow but steady and I’m now realizing that’s what matters

You´re amazing how you put everything into words and into perspective. I lost 13 kg (just over 28 pounds) over the last 6 months while eating pizza, drinking full fat milk and having a social life (it still surprises me how many people think you can´t eat regular food when losing weight). I weighed myself every single morning and just like you, I fall mostly into the 'muggles beware' group :) I admit that I had a few panic attacks with these weight spikes, but most of the time I could work out what the reason was. And even when I couldn´t, I just kept going and I always knew the weight was going to fall off in the end - I kept losing about 2 - 3 kg every month). I am still losing some fat, but my main focus now is to gain more muscle to shape that butt (and everything else) and just to be happy and healthy. I just wish I found you earlier because I would have saved myself some panic attacks and would have laughed along with while watching your inspiring and entertaining videos. Great stuff, Jordan! Love you too ♥

  • @shannonbillowsfitness
    @shannonbillowsfitness 4 года назад +1

There are so many reasons like you mentioned, that go into why the scale weight fluctuates. For most people, even if they know all the reasons can still be really frustrating.
What I find is a great addition to weighing your self, is to weigh yourself daily, take the average, and only compare your averages.
Now for some if you are weight training you can actually gain muscle at a surprisingly fast rate, so alongside taking your daily weight, also measure your waist weekly.
For every 1 cm you drop off your waist is equivalent to 1 kg/2.2lbs of fat loss, or at least very very close to.
The best practice is to do this same day same time each week preferably Thurs fri before the weekend when most people are social and eating different types of foods.
Hope this little tip helps someone :)

It’s crazy after watching this video and seeing it. The following 4 months the exact same trends. The scale never drops each week and actually gains by the third week. Also, I gave you a subscribe the second I saw you named trends with Harry Potter themes. So awesome!

Dude, I have been following you for YEARS, and finally stumbled across this video! Thank you SO much for this explanation! I have been on my fitness journey for a year and a half now, and have lost 61 pounds. My weight loss has followed the Muggles Beware trend and I never knew it! Sure enough, over time the trend is DOWN!!!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

The way you put it into words is beautiful. Couldn’t have found a better way to explain it. I recent just hit a dull moment in my fat loss journey and watching this video really helped understand why it changes so much so often. Thank you for your videos ! It reminds me of high school with the expo marker and the white board ! And I’m on the other end taking notes 😂

LOVE your videos, Jordan. The quality and the amount of useful knowledge you give to us with everything you do is PRICELESS. Really, and I wanted to thank you because I feel so, so, so grateful for having found you on Instagram a couple of days ago. I have been reading your articles and doing your Powerlifting for Fat Loss 30 day challenge and I have also challenged myself to maintain my calorie deficit for 90 days. I feel that you're my friend haha, so, again, thank you. I cannot even imagine all the effort and work you put give so much to us! 💗

I’m two weeks into my weight loss and for the first time since i started I weighed myself today, I was up 3kg even though I’ve been eating less and exercising six days a week, I literally started to have a panic attack and pity party but something told me to hold on to my panic and check the internet for any answers as to why I have gained and here I am. Calm and cool as a breeze when I was panicking 19 minutes ago. Thanks. Knowledge is power

This video is incredibly helpful. I don’t know why everyone isn’t talking about the process with ups and downs because it makes so much sense. I think about how many years I wasted being frustrated because I didn’t understand it. (I thought the only ups and downs were yo-yo dieting which I personally know is awful.). Thank you so much @Jordan for sharing your wisdom. 🙏

Agree that gains/stalls in weight doesn't mean you should stop, or that you're not making progress. Disagree that it doesn't potentially call for some adjustment. No acknowledgement of metabolic rate adapting to caloric deficit in an effort towards homeostasis. You could argue that you can still persist as-is, but if it's a metabolic slow-down, it can take months to give way, maybe longer.

Wow, the best video I've seen on this subject! For me the key to getting through this is to make sure you are getting positive feedback in other ways. Regardless of what the scale might say on a daily basis, eating healthier makes me feel better, walking an hour a day makes me feel better and my waistline is smaller.

This is a really great video! As a person that weighs herself everyday, i also saw the patterns you showed here but am very very fortunate that I noticed the trends early enough to not make myself lose the motivation when I was seriously trying to lose fat. This is a great educational video, because I sure wish I saw this when I was trying to lose weight years ago but just couldnt do it right! I was just impatient

It's really common for those who are obese to lose weight faster at the beginning of a weight loss journey. It takes more energy to move 300 pounds vs 150 pounds.

Thank you Jordan! This has been happening to me, but I didn’t know why...but I knew there was a reason. I have been careful about what I eat, and exercising(no snacking). This is a relief. Reverse dieting was a new concept, but I remember after a hard workout I was craving something sweet, and I binged on blueberries, raspberries with honey. The next day I expected the worse, stepped on the scale and found that I was lighter than the day before. Who knew? My body knew what it needed better than I.

Thanks for the explanation. My weight loss graph looks like yours (third graph). My cycle of weight loss is one day, it has a sharp drop after which it goes up again and stays up for 3 days, and then it goes down again, but this time a little lower than the first drop. I tend to look at the trend every 2 weeks, which is always lower, thus confirming I'm on the correct path. I suggest measuring your weight daily since it is a good motivational tool. However, the lower the body fat gets, the harder weight loss is going to get, which requires good consistency and a good plan.

It's a process we should enjoy and keep consistent towards our healthy lifestyle. It's should be the scale it should be who we are becoming in the process.

Oh man GREAT video! So glad I found this. I have lost 66-67 pounds since last July with another 15-16 to go. I am the 3rd chart you drew up to a freaking tee. I mean I dropped so much faster in the beginning but still was in that same pattern of number 3. Now when I got down to the last 20-25 pounds is really where that drop, stay roughly the same and then drop a bit, then stay the same hit. Its like step on the scale, hit another milestone down, the muddle around for a full week or two, then drop 2 pounds again.
I was 205.8 a week and half ago, I have basically stayed at or around 206.0 to 207.0 since then. I bet by Friday this week I am at 205.0. Its almost like predictable pattern at this point which I take to be a good thing. Is it? I want to be 190, that is the goal. Started at 272.6 Oh I weight myself every single day. I only started that 2 months ago though. Before it was weigh in on Monday and Friday.
