It often just comes down to experimentation. A few ideas: Try dialing back the gain on your amp or running into the amp set right at the edge of breakup. Roll back the volume or gain on the pedals. Try tuning the EQ on your amp. Make sure you're using an appropriate string guages. Experiment with different speaker cabs (makes a huge difference), etc. Just lots of experimentation.
