Hi Ryan, what is your take on the actual Asset ID within a CMMS/EAM system; would you recommend building logic into the asset code or to use insignificant/sequential numbering and handle the asset categorization/classification/types etc in the appropriate fields of the CMMS/EAM?
Use sequential numbering, automatically assigned (just like with work orders) and use separate fields to capture the info you wanted to codify. Any time you build codes into UIN's (unique identification numbers) you create a trap for the future when you wish to make changes to the hierarchy. Ask me how I know...
