That gen1 mindset tends to kick you around a little but you're still learning and I'm along for the ride and love watching you grow as both a player and as a content creator. One thing for the gen 3...or really any gen game is that substitute is a completely broken move 9 times out of 10. You said in the Hitmonlee video that Bulk Up makes substitute pointless, but it actually makes it a million times better. The defence boosts makes your sub harder to destroy for physical attackers and while still preventing the negative effects like stat drops or status. This would allow you basically a free +6 against the Heracross or the Steelix in the league rematches due to rocktomb spam, and because the ai doesn't really understand substitute mechanics, Lance's Gyarados would just spam T-Wave the entire time as well. At +6 even resisted brick break will kill almost anything. Also the sub would make Agatha far more consistant by blocking hypnosis and confuse ray. +3 brick break would still kill Arbok who is probably spamming Glare into your sub anyways. So Bulk Up, Substitute, Brick Break and Rock Slide is basically the perfect moveset for the entire game once you can get them. Sorry for the wall of text, and I look forward to watching all of your future content!
29:44 you could have used brick break here because it destroys reflect (and light screen) on the field. Without reflect on the field you can pretty much use any 100% accuracy move with full +6 setup for guaranteed 1 hits
Hey there! Since you asked: I really like you explaining moveset constraints. We might forget some details about moves (availability for example) and sometimes I find myself thinking "Why is he not using XYZ" while there is a solid reason for your choice that you might give for granted the audience remebered as well. :)
Earthquake doesn't seem very helpful when most of Agatha's Pokemon are immune to Ground and you have Brick Break for Rock and Steel types. Probably would've been better to keep Return for more damage against Alakazam, Exeggutor and Heracross.
I'm happy to see Bulk Up making such an impact on Hitmonchan! I'm also happy that daily December will start tomorrow and excited to see what you have in store for us!
I remember going through the Gauntlet to getting this in Blue/Yellow, and then using it just outside Fuchsia "oh cool, a fire punch, let's use it on this random grass type to train it up for Koga" - did pathetic damage and then boxed it to be never used again
I know it is probably unorthodox due to it not being available in the main story of that game, but I'm kinda hoping for a Hitmonchan solo run in Platinum. Between the physical/special split and it gaining the ability Iron Fist, it feels like a whole new pokemon starting in Gen 4.
Have the feeling Hitmontop will perform the worse of the 3, it's a Pokémon truly made to be great in VGC but in a singles format it's gonna struggle especially since Intimidate printing text always will slow it down by default, it's Atk is even lower than Hitmonchan which already was struggling with certain thresholds plus for some reason it doesn't learn Rock Tomb for early game, instead getting Dig but at least it will still have Rock Slide.

To appease the mighty algorithm and for fun every Day of December I will at minimum do encounters in gen 4 eterna forest while watching Scott's daily video! I may sneak encounters in elsewhere, but 100% with our daily Scott! So where are we now? I recently just crested half odds (4096/8192) and began this video at 4556. You should box your hm users always before the league since it directly affects the set up of the main pokemon,and not just the league but every time you see posible
I put this on Lee because I didn't realize you were going to do Chan as well I would love to see comparison about what would happen if he had the same special attack as he does defense so that he could actually use the elemental punches before the physical special split
Isn't return straight up a better move for Hitmonchan than EQ? By the time you get it, you've already dealt with Blaine, and the only mon it's best at during the league it's Arbok. Big whoops. Return is also chan's strongest move into the Eggxecutor. Also also, is there any chance a moveset of brick break, bulk up, rock slide and substitute to be better during the second league? It covers for thunder wave and rock tomb. Could free up some turns used by rest. Great run, btw. Gen 3 is truly the gen that gave hope to the fighting types. The following ones made them truly strong.

I realized something watching this video I know how much you dislike inaccurate moves however if an inaccurate move is likely to one hit a pokemon if it doesn’t miss when a more consistent move will 2 shot everytime. There is an argument to use the less accurate move as it significantly more likely to hit over 2 turns than one with the chance to knock out the pokemon faster either taking the same time or less.
Much like the actors I've always preferred Chan over Lee. So it's always irritated me that Chan is the "weaker" of the two. _Though this vid proves its not by much. You're solid with either choice imo._
I love the SC references. Many years ago I was in MLG tournaments for halo wars. Really enjoying it, I tried SC2, but the lack of gamepad options turned me off. I did however used to watch it way back when in the days of TB(rip). I know PC nerds will be mad that I wanted to play on controller, but hey, I'm a lazy couch gamer.
It could be interesting to do a “back port” of hitmonchan in gen 1 or 2 where it gets its upgraded special defense as its special/special attack. The presence of bulk up probably makes this less interesting in gen 3.
Seems like you could've used Brick Break on Champion 2's Alakazam for accuracy and to break Reflect since you set up to +6. That said, nice to see this thing get some redemption!

You know, for a Fighting Pokemon, Earthquake doesn't seem like useful coverage in Kanto's lategame. Brick Break/Whatever covers the Rock types. The Ghosts are immune to Earthquake. Arbok is still easy to out with Return. Exeggutor gets hit hardest by Return out of the options. There aren't any Electric types like in Yellow. Probably best to just keep Return, imo. (I guess it might be worth it to use Earthquake over Return if the opponent's Rival has Venusaur instead of Charizard. I do think there is an argument for that, as 2x Intimidate user + Venusaur always resists Fighting throughout the run, but that is sort of a separate matter.)

Saying that with bulk up substitute is less useful is just plain wrong, it just blocks status, and potentially crits that can bypass the increased defence. It will be less reset intense while u safely setup behind the sub. Fighting + rock coverage is more than enough for the lategame so earthquake is essentially useless imo for FRLG lategame
I don't know if I'm just tired or if I've watched too many of these recently but when you were going through the list of Mt. Moon trainers and mentioned the Hiker my brain translated that into Bruno. I don't think I like that development.
I think you made two major mistakes in this run. By teaching return , you really restricted your move set when this pokemon really did not need it and You choosing not to teach substitute.Gave you resets where you wouldn't have had them before like Blaine and koga. When I do these runs, if i ever have a Pokémon with a setup move, get substitute every time. Plus another note of advice is that the tm for earthquake is kind of bad in the remakes since it helps with no one in the league.
You really should have learned Rock Slide when you first got the chance earlier in the run. It would have helped you a ton with Blaine's Arcanine and later the rival's Charizard.
Is iron fist not better than keen eye? Avoiding accuray drops is very useful in certain situations, but i wonder if the overall increased damage from iron fist is worth considering.
Forgetting Limber yesterday just to turn around and forget Keen Eye today (wow, can't believe I was lucky enough to hit the Gengar after it boosted its evasion so much!) Brick break is a buyable tm from the celadon mart so it is a far more accessible move than u think. Gonna post the celadon mart tm list down so it could maybe help u plan out for future runs. TM05 roar TM15 hyper beam TM 28 dig TM 31 brick break TM 43 secret power(discount body slam) TM 45 attract Hope the list can help u to remember for future videos ahead
To add on, definitely u have no need for extra money/vitamins this run but just in case if u need it, I myself when I do these solo runs I tend to do what is called a half Silph run where I head into it to collect high value items so that I can have a surplus of cash that I could use to buy vitamins/coins if needed for whichever pokemon I am running, this allows for better EV spread as well at the cost of some time, which I think u can ponder over the extra cost of time to attain them.
Before watching: Definitively will do worse than Hitmonlee. Slower and hits less hard. The slightly better bulk really won't help, Hitmonchan has to use Bulk Up anyway too. The moves Hitmonchan learns are also a lot worse througout. Yeah, the Elemental Punches would be a really nice gimick, IF they didn't come from his abysmal special! I don't even think these moves should be used, the Special Stat is just too bad. Seriously, why didn't GameFreak, when they split the Special stat in gen 2 give Hitmonlee the great special defense and Hitmonchan the great special attack? It would have made so much sense and would have made Hitmonchan really, really good! But alas, it wasn't supposed to be. Which means: Worse moves coming from a worse attack, throughout most of the game. Hitmonchan will do quite a bit worse than Hitmonlee. Still pretty good though, just quite a lot worse than it's brother. My guess is lower A-tier. After watching: Upper A-tier. So, a bit better than I thought. But overall worked about as well as I expected. I'm surprised that you used the Elemental Punches at all, but kind of nice that there was SOME use for that gimmick.
Instead of teaching Rest, Sub would probably have been better in the rematches since chances are good Gyarados would've just spammed t-wave while you set up
I'm impressed you were able to get past Sabrina's Venomoth so easily! I expected it to give you a lot more trouble as a ghost/psychic type.
Even with Hitmonchan's pitiful Special Attack, Ice Punch does wonders for the Dragon/Flying Venomoth

Hitmontop is going to be slower since intimidate pops up every single encounter.
Hitmonchan is one of those Pokemon that was really benefitted by the physical/special split.

i mean there is another reason why it is mandatory to get rock slide: you cannot hit a gengar with the combination of Rock Slide, EQ and Return.
I think in the future it is worth considering not teaching earthquake to fighting types before the e4 despite it generally being a good move.

Sir, when you have 941 attack, just use brick break on alakazam, no need to risk missing with rock slide

Iron Fist does not exist in Fire Red. It got introduced in Gen 4, so Keen Eye is the only option.

Which means: Worse moves coming from a worse attack, throughout most of the game. Hitmonchan will do quite a bit worse than Hitmonlee. Still pretty good though, just quite a lot worse than it's brother. My guess is lower A-tier.

Upper A-tier. So, a bit better than I thought. But overall worked about as well as I expected. I'm surprised that you used the Elemental Punches at all, but kind of nice that there was SOME use for that gimmick.

Instead of teaching Rest, Sub would probably have been better in the rematches since chances are good Gyarados would've just spammed t-wave while you set up
Between IT and LEE Hitmon Chan is the way better/easier of the 2.
