This may have already been addressed by another comment, but lightning rod’s utility as an ability for Rhyhorn/Rhydon is relevant in doubles. It redirects all electric type attacks to pokemon with this ability, therefore making your ally pokemon safe from electric type attacks.
@@MazterP28 Capoeira, actually, a martial art created by slaves in Brazil, which they had to disguise as a dance, or a game (technically you don't "fight" Capoeira, but rather "play" Capoeira), since their masters could not know that they were training to fight
In gen 3, Lightning Rod did not grant an immunity or a SpAtk boost. Its purpose was to redirect electric attacks into Rhydon to protect a teammate in double battles since Rhydon is naturally immune to Electric. The redirection of electric attacks was the actual goal.
Scott's Thoughts: Falls victim to the super-effective trap. ImportedCheese: Don't overthink it. Hitmontop has enough attack to OHKO Raichu. *BREAK HIM!*
@T_____W____7777 that was me that commented on the Hitmonchan one and he is also my other favorite Fighting type. Lucario is my favorite and best Pokemon to me I play him in my party on every Pokemon game known to man.
If I'm not mistaken in this generation Lightningrod does not prevent it from doing damage it just forces all lightning attack to be targeted on the lightningrod. So that ground-typing is mega clutch with lightningrod. (In later gens lightningrod gets busted by negating the damage and giving a buff)
In Pokemon Colosseum, there is a boss that uses a double battle team with Water and Flying types. He also has a Rhydon with Lightningrod. It is probably the only time Lightningrod is useful on an NPC’s team.
I love Hitmontop since the beyblade minigame in Stadium 2 and I'm so glad to see it do much better than I expected. If only it was easier to get (without randomiser) then trying to get a Tyrogue's stats exactly right xD
17:45 While it's a joke, to be clear, having two of the same type does not stack. Being Psychic/Psychic would be exactly the same as being pure Psychic. It's how Mega Aggron works - it does not remove the Rock type, but replaces it with Steel so it becomes Steel/Steel = pure Steel 18:40 Lightning Rod does NOT provide an immunity in Gen 3, that was added in Gen 4. The Special Attack raising effect was added in Gen 5 and, in Gen 5 and 6, it does not raise Special Attack if the Lightning Rod user is immune to Electric (it still redirects, though). Starting from Gen 7, it both redirects and gives a Special Attack boost.
Interesting that in this format, intimidate is bad no matter who uses it. Lose time when you use it, lose attack when they use it. The solo pokemon challenge would be better if it were removed entirely.
that champion 1 fight was insane. two timely rockslide flinches or crits, plus a future sight miss, which all looked like they needed to happen, is something like a 1% chance.
1) I think about of general gen 3 fighting type glow up is their abilities. A quick scan gives us: Vital Spirit(Primape), Guts(Machoke, Hariyama, Heracross), Limber(Htimonlee), Keen Eye(Htimonchan), Intimidate(Hitmontop), Thick Fat(Hariyama), Pure Power(Medicham), Swarm(Heracross), Blaze(Blaziken), Effort Spore(Breloom). That's a really good set, ranging from just useful to game breaking. I'm actually surprised that Hitmontop didn't get Vital Spirit or Own Tempo to stay more in theme with Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan. 2) Gods yes, I confuse Pidgeotto and Pidgeot all the bloody time.
I nicknamed a Hitmontop “Dr. Topper” in my Scarlet run. And he had Technician, which gave him some added power for moves 60 BP or lower. He could also learn Triple Axel, an Ice-type move. That, along with Triple Kick, was quite useful for me.
18:50 about Lightning Rod. The immunity and +1 Special Attack was introduced in gen 5 The reason why Rhyhorn and Rhydon have Lightning Rod is because in episode 58 of the anime. Pikachu managed to beat a Rhydon by aiming for the horn
damn this is the 3rd crit in a row Koga's first koffing has gotten in these hitmon playthroughs, if he got a 3rd poison in a row I would've called it scripted at this point lol
Lightning Rod redirects Electric type moves in Double Battles. The Special Attack boost is not a thing until Gen. 5, same with the Electric immunity. Ground types don't get the boost until Gen. 7.
Yeah, they didn’t really actually make the hitmons associated with a stat, as cool as that would have been. But the existence of hitmontop does imply a hitmonbottom.
Not using Rest in the League rematches was a big missed opportunity imo. Maybe it wouldn't have been viable against Agatha, but it certainly would've helped for Lance and the Champ.
I also think Pigeotto seems like it should be the last stage. It actually seems like a localization error or at least a localization decision. I just checked the japanese names and Pigeot in japanese is Pigeotto (literally Pi-Jo-tto). Bulbapedia phonetically translates this as Pigeot, but that just seems wrong. The -tto is definitely not muted, as written. Pidgeotto is just called Pigeon in japanese. Maybe the localization team just thought that name was lame and moved things around
Will you be doing the Hitmons in Gen IV at some point? Being able to use its physical attack stat for the elemental punches should really boost Hitmonchan
I saw that your first playthrough / league rematch tier lists have only 81 avaiable Pokémon on them, which I assume is the number of fully evolved Kanto Pokémon. If that's the case, then adding Hitmontop to them shouldn't have incremented the Ranked Pokémon counter, but in this video it did. Doubt it'll matter for the League Rematch Tier List, but I assume you want to do all the Kanto final stages before moving on to second playthroughs in Fire Red, so that might be important to address for the First Playthrough Tier List.
I don't fall into the Pidgeot trap purely because everytime I think of that line the weirdness over the names seemingly being swapped around is forefront in my head.
Intimidate adds like 2min to the run (~60 battles * 2sec ability animation) hitmontop starts with a disadvantage, but I guess it doesn’t really matter cause it’s finishing time won’t be competitive edit: well… it’s time was better than I thought. Maybe I guessed wrong 😅
I've been curious: With these three fighting type family members, is Champion Terry supposed to be Hulk Hogan (Terry Bollea)? I couldn't get it out of my head
I swear the Pidgeotto thing is a gen 1 mistake and that it was supposed to be the final forms name and they've just had to roll with it ever since cos changing it now would confuse even more people!
Whilst Lightningrod on Rhyhorn is uselss in single battkes, in double battles it's useful on Rhyhorn to draw all electric attacks to it instead of it's partner (like say a Dragon Dancing Gyarados)
Because you despise intimidate, I really think you should run this again with Technician. I'm less than 10 minutes in but something feels off about a hitmontop with intimidate 🤣
25:11 AI gonna AI. Future Sight should have only been treated as a valid option if the opponent is immune to other attacks. Instead, it sees both it or Psychic do enough damage and chooses one randomly. It makes Alakazam a far lesser threat than it should have been in FRLG.
Lets go for my prediction Final moveset rock slide earthquake bulk up brick break Tier : B between Mew and blastoise EDIT : I WAS WRONG MY MAN HITMONTOP WAS PRETTY GOOD🥲

As Hitmonlee is based on Bruce Lee and Hitmonchan is based on Jackie Chan, I am choosing to believe Himontop is based on Carrot Top.
Lmfao!! Makes perfect sense!!!
Or ZZ Top
It’s based on capiaro (dancing mixed martial arts)

I always feel like I’m in on the bit with Venomoth but “this thing is a dual psychic type” made me spit out my coffee
And then it became a steel type mid-battle!

It is purely a relocating ability in gen 3, yes.
In Pokemon Colosseum, there is a boss that uses a double battle team with Water and Flying types. He also has a Rhydon with Lightningrod. It is probably the only time Lightningrod is useful on an NPC’s team.
Good timing. I need a distraction during Colosseum's 100 battle challenge
Good luck , 3 hour sesh to complete from the beggining😂
I can't believe Hitmontop is the first non-Kanto pokémon played by Scott in Fire Red
actually Hitmontop is based on Capoeira!

On the first day of Christmas, Scott’s Thoughts gave to me…
A Hitmontop foreign to Kanto!

As soon as he said "things are gonna go really wrong" I had a feeling and o was proven correct......it was Agatha All Along😂
Lmao lt. Surge opening comment. "This guy is so bad"
I didn’t think you would have the patience to stretch it out into a third video. Good play Scott you got me.
ME: *Sipping coffee*
Scott: ITSPOILERTIME!
7:20 the FRLG version of this theme is so sublime!
I hope we get to see a technician run of hitmontop someday!
Scott will redeem Bruno's Hitmontop
Good thing Hitmontop is fast enough to not have any major setbacks.
I can’t wait to see what Obama-snow can do. Truly the most charismatic Pokémon.
Ayyyyeeeee one my favorite Fighting types and one of my favorite Hitmon Pokemon ever!!!! 💯💯💯
19:06 fun fact: in gen 3, lightning Rod doesn't give +1 spatk when hit by electric moves, just redirects it to the user
damn this is the 3rd crit in a row Koga's first koffing has gotten in these hitmon playthroughs, if he got a 3rd poison in a row I would've called it scripted at this point lol
Venomoth is the first physics-physics with Tera type psychic. So it does x16 damage to Hitmontop.
Lightning Rod redirects Electric type moves in Double Battles.
The Special Attack boost is not a thing until Gen. 5, same with the Electric immunity.
Ground types don't get the boost until Gen. 7.
i've had the same thought about pidgeot vs pidgeotto. pidgeotto really does seem like it should be the name of the final stage
Haven't been this hype for a channel's December since Donkey Kong December 🎉
Excited for this month. Thanks for the excellent videos as always.
I think the thumbnail art was perfect
Gen 2 games onward needed their own versions of the Wrapping Lass to justify Rapid Spin's existence. I just want the move to have a niche lol.
I am so randomly excited to see how this goes lol wasn't even thinking about it till I saw the thumbnail 😂

Nothing can go wrong, it is funny how much bad things happen after that is said
So good mons for the round 2 E4 are those that can use Substitute, Some set Up and 2 attacks with good coverage.
The back sprite for Hitmontop is a bit janky. His legs are turned like he is spinning to the right, but his tail seems to be straight.
Lightning Rod on Rhyhorn makes sense for double battles.
I saw that your first playthrough / league rematch tier lists have only 81 avaiable Pokémon on them, which I assume is the number of fully evolved Kanto Pokémon. Daily December! So excited
Is there a pokemon with 3 types? Would that be broken?
Also we need a Special Hitmon; Hitmonchi?
well when you play hitmontop in gen 2 its movepool is gonna be abysmal heads up
gen 2 hitmontop is an absolute atrocity
it's just gonna be another returnbot with Triple Kick as coverage lol, it's not that bad.

Substitute would have hard countered heracross because I don’t think he would have been able to break the sub unless he hit counter.
