Indeed both Scarlattis were geniuses. No wonder there's a street in Madrid honouring their surname. But, with this fandango, the debt is clearly owed to the greatest of them all, another madrileño, Boccherini.

I’ve known of Scarlatti’s prodigious & astonishing compositions for decades. Here, with OSF, for me, it was love at first sight! I fell in love with first violin, lead viola, the percussionist & double bass. And had my eye on conductor who mesmerised me. Oh why am I stuck at the bottom of the world away from my original cultural homeland.

Spain has given to the world so much inspiration. Great composer has pieces in Spanish styles: Bizet, Ravel, Glinka ...........

Well, technically Naples and Spain were pretty much the same thing in Scarlatti's time. Both kingdoms under the same monarchy for two centuries - first under the Trastamara, then under the Habsburgs. In fact, the Kingdom of Naples was administratively a viceroyalty of Spain. Only the War of the Spanish Succession and the arrival of the Bourbons to the throne of Spain separated the Italian domains from their sister kingdom. Scarlatti himself lived for 30 years in Spain, precisely from the moment Naples separated from it.

Yes, I agree with you, completely. Dit it not sound sarcastic, I could name it A Covid-Fandango. As a matter of fact, that music is passionate and gloomy at the same time.

Lovely and atmospheric rendition of this Baroque fandango. This orchestra adds great emotion to the piece. I really enjoyed! (Note: I believe this version is based on the fandango of Luigi Boccherini, not that of Domenico Scarlatti. Other commenters have also wondered this.)

    • @HaritheRenaissanceMan

Actually, there IS a fandango by Scarlatti - or more accurately, ATTRIBUTED to Scarlatti (spelled “Escarlate”) since it’s not his autograph. Some scholars have questioned its authenticity, but regardless of who actually wrote it, the Scarlatti fandango makes a nice addition to the more well known Soler (also only attributed to him) and Boccherini versions. And this orchestral arrangement is quite exciting. Here’s the Scarlatti version performed by the famed Rafael Puyana on harpsichord. ruclips.net/video/gorM-8HwWsk/видео.html

The sound engineer didn't alter the volume ratios and therefore this recording shows precisely the problem with the guitar as an orchestra instrument: the soloist is virtually inaudible to the audience.
