- Metropolitan Police Recruitment Video from the early 80's. The video follows the life of John Patterson from a 'Citizens Arrest' right the way through to his first day on the beat as a Metropolitan Police Officer.

Wow, I joined in 1979. This brings back some memories.
I joined in March 1980 and what a nostalgic reminder. Can honestly say I was proud to have served with such a grand bunch of guys and girls.
A job for life back then. Bit different these days: Join up for a few years, get rapidly disillusioned about the fact you're not allowed to chase villains any more and have to attend endless diversity courses instead, realise that everybody else is getting paid a lot more for taking a lot less shit, jack it in and go an get a proper jobs that pays proper money, with no night shifts. Jobs fucked. Looks good on your CV though!
Fuck off...coppers pay spirals upwards from day one! Least the pay scales i saw a few years ago did.
"Spirals upwards".... starts off at just under £30k, goes up by £2.5k a year until you hit £38k where it caps out, although speaking to regulars in the job you only see a pay increase of about £1,000 per year, and that £30k sounds good until you realise you only take home about £1,700 a month.....
I was working in IT and taking home more than that in a boring IT job stuck in an office.
I'm a special and have a training date next month for the regulars.
It's been lowered since 2013. Pay starts at around 19k these days rising to 30k..

the lad between 2.15 and 2.20 being told he has failed his initial test to get in the Job, is Ken Lovell. It obvious that they have taken a bit of artistic licence here as he was a former cadet who passed out of Hendon and he worked with me at Kings Cross nick, ND. He went on to be a DC in the Murder Squad at the Yard. Now retired and living in Florida where he teaches scuba diving of all things. Top bloke and top old bill. I also worked with the former Captain of the RMP who is at 4.23. God time really does fly

23 years on and Hendon still looks the same both in and out.
"that's it then, they want me to join on the 15th next month"..... haha as if it was like that nowadays.... I'm already a Special in the same force and my application to the regulars from application to appointment has taken almost 1 year.

How times change
I attended a seminar put on by the London metro cops. One on the Lts. in an out fit in the UK was an ex-London metro cop. The Constables were a very brave and forthright group. Later in life, I met a former constable who left the force because of the abuse (physical and emotional) at the hands of the English public. He told me that based upon his experience that no one respected the cops and the crime was getting so bad that he feared that he would gunned down in the street. He didnt' carry a gun and none of them did. I spoke with a retired Inspector who told me that the bad guys were getting so bold that stabbing or shooting a Constable could buy one respect, He told me that the British public was the problem because they could not believe that things were so bad that Constable had to be armed. The public was wrong as usual.
upon graduation , PC Patterson thinks to himself,..." now the real education begins! and they thought the Krays were real geezers.... birds, dope, and claret everywhere for me!"
Patterson is still a cop and I've seen him on RUclips!

Please do not go heavy handed with people filming at police stations some people like myself I am pro police but when you go heavy handed and abusing section 1 of PACE and Section 43 all because they are filming in a public place doing nothing wrong their is some are good police some are bad, if you might get rid of your tv shows EG: Motorway Cops and Traffic Cops and Road Wars, please that is why their is a disconnect with the public when you watch the things i seen on youtube. I like seeing different kinds of police vehicles.

7:31 Why did they get rid of that bit of the training course? Because nowadays they're not public servants, they're crown servants. Just ask any Police officer! If an officer who did train in water rescue came across a real life rescue scenario, I'm pretty sure they would be expected to stand by and do nothing.

I was here as a Cadet and as a Constable, from July 1984 to December 1985. I retired in July 1990 with 'Exemplary Conduct' rating.

Because the founder of the British police didn't want to equip them with firearms due to fears of public mistrust amongst the politicians & public of the day. Also the Parish constables that preceded the police were armed & were brutal with their weapons, along with customs officers or revenue men as they were called.

This action resulted in civillian deaths, which caused at most levels of our society. Parliment needed a body to enforce hte law that did not carry guns, to ensure that this kind of incident did not happen again.
PC Andrew Ott struck William Horner with a "full force blow" using his shield at a tuition fees protest in Westminster in 2010.
He was jailed for eight months after being convicted of causing actual bodily harm at Southwark Crown Court.
Judge Jeffrey Pegden said Ott, 36, from Kent, had abused his power.
He told Ott: "This offence was committed in a sterile area, in relative darkness, when you had the victim cornered and no violence was necessary at all.
"You hit him with a full force blow to his face with your shield.
"That was wholly gratuitous, unnecessary violence, and I have considered the stress on William Horner over the last few years."

Or an alternative .. Are you prepared to deal with decomposing dead bodies , suspicious deaths .. Be spat at or assaulted ? Do you mind getting covered in blood , puke and piss . How do yo feel about saving someone's life after they have been stabbed / shot . How about having one weekend off every four ? .. or returning to work having had only five hours sleep ? Searching for old people who have gone missing because of dementia ...etc etc .
