    Great concept Dan, does the lower exhaust hose "That Really Sucks LOL! get in the way when you are using the lath?
    When you slide the catcher along the lath does the motor cut out create an issue with dust?
    Have you done a follow up video using the Really Suckeeee System LOL!

    • @TherapyWoodWorks
      @TherapyWoodWorks  Год назад

      Actually the lower hose does not interfere at all. moving the tray doesn't affect how well the unit extracts dust as most of the dust is actually extracted by the upper hose, the lower section takes care of most of the heavier chips. If I had to do it again I probably would have made the tray about 10 cm wider to better catch the flying chips, but I don't mind a little sweeping as long as the dust is controlled. I have plans to do a "follow up video " on many of the different things I built, just got to get around to it !!!!

    how do you straddle the dust tube in the front? i would put it in the back of the lathe

    • @TherapyWoodWorks
      @TherapyWoodWorks  Год назад

      Actually it does not interfere at all. Narrow enough profile to not even be noticeable. Also my lathe is too close to the wall to mount off the back

    Great video, thank you. Is your dust extraction system grounded? Thanks, Sharon

    • @TherapyWoodWorks
      @TherapyWoodWorks  Год назад

      No I have not gone to the extent of grounding. There is some intermittent static charge build up depending on relative humidity that you can actually feel. However I do not believe there would ever be enough of a discharge within the piping to ever ignite the wood fines

    So Dan does it really suck during actual use? Interested in seeing how it picks up large chips. I can’t find your follow up video…..

    • @TherapyWoodWorks
      @TherapyWoodWorks  3 года назад +1

      Oh I have not done a follow-up video yet... I will add that to the ever-growing list. But I am pleased with how it is working. It does grab the larger chips that fall in the bin but there is still a fair amount of chips that miss the bin. It is still a way easier clean-up than before. I would estimate that 70% of the heavy chips get collected and 90% of the dust. I am no longer wary of lathe projects. Thanks for your comments 🙂 👍

    • @TherapyWoodWorks

      Actually I forgot that I did do a bit of a follow up... in my "Plumb crazy" video ( ruclips.net/video/LNjH_9jEL8U/видео.html ) I carve myself a carvers mallet and you get to see how well the extraction actually works.

    Great video - love the idea and narrative. Word of advice, using CA accerator on polycarbonate will crack crazing or cracks. You should let the CA cure naturally or use aquarium cement.

    I'm currently setting up a small woodworking shop and have some dust extraction 'systems' that will be set up, but they will provide minimum extraction at best. I like the idea of using clear tubing. I would imagine that will provide a better idea as to when or where the system might plug up?
    I have also purchased an older Rockwell Beaver 3400 lathe. I have not used it yet, but from videos I've watched it would appear that a lathe makes quite the mess.

    • @TherapyWoodWorks
      @TherapyWoodWorks  3 года назад +1

      yes lathes do create such a mess, so much so I was reluctant to use mine much until I perfected a dust extraction system. One of the best minimalistic dust extraction systems that work well is a cyclone extractor, like a dust deputy inline ahead of a regular shop vac.

    Many plastics are amenable to scraping for deburring and smoothing edges. You can make a real scraper, but often the tang on a file will do if it has crisp edges. So, you're using the file proper as a handle and the proper file handle as a tool. Sorry, but after all the "dust collector sucks" puns, you earned that last sentence, although I enjoyed hearing someone say "distal end" of a collector.
