I have the Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6. Basically equivalent, though the 1mm wider will be discernible. I second everything he said. It is so sharp I use it as a travel lens. Tiny, and super sharp, so I will crop it to give different looks. One advantage: it has depth of field scales which is super useful. Inches to infinity around f/8.

My current 5 x 6 ft micro office setup would love a 9mm lens to replace that 24-70 that I currently rock for zoom calls... the space savings alone from a shorter lens profile makes me do a happy dance inside. 📷

The Laowa lens doesn't come in Canon RF mount so this is interesting. It's also the same price. Of course Canon just released a 10-20mm L series zoom for a much higher price.

  • @pepeye

I have the Laowa 7.5mm for micro four third’s (15mm equivalent) and there’s one more use case that I find for it. More and more these days I find that walk about street photography where people will be in the shot can attract hostility from people who don’t want to be in the shot and just the possibility of that sort of confrontation is creatively distracting. But with an ultra wide like the Laowa, I can compose in a way that mostly avoids this because people don’t realize that they’re going to be in the shot because the camera is not pointed in their direction. To them, I looking at something to their left or right side. The results are a bit different because you’re composing for the edges (I think of the as one-shot diptychs), but different can be good right?

For those of us who shoot Fuji X (APS-C), I'd be really curious how this 9mm F5.6 compares with Fuji's XF8mm F3.5 R WR in terms of image quality. Fuji's weather-resistant and AF of course and can take 62mm filters. It's also twice the price, retail, new.

Thanks for the review. I enjoyed it.
It would have been nice if the review would have stated the FOV. I had to look this up. For FF the diagonal FOV in degrees is:
    This lens :132
    Sigma 12-24 : 122 - 84
    Tamron 14mm 2.8 : 113
I really like the Sigma 12-24 as it is the perfect FF lens for taking photos out of the windows of airplanes while in the air. For APS-C I would look for an 8-16.
I wish lens makers would make lenses like these for Pentax mount or design the lenses so the mount is the only thing that has to change. This would make the lens itself longer for cameras with shorter flange distance but it would open up these lenses to be used on more platforms.

I have taken time to consider if this lens is for me.The square space image gallery is more like photoshop pro and ai implants. The way I see it is photography is less of a capture but more of a tracing image. I ll fix it when I get home. How does that fit into your vlog? Well lots of people will have seen comics not many will as a child remember the comic being delivered by a letter box. The 7 artisan lens offers the delivery of a comic book change of photographic perspective. The way we view the image we are trying to craft. Images don’t have to be perfect they have only to grab your attention. The reason why I will purchase it because it allows me to change my style of creative image. I can go back to cartoons type images and have an adventure. Cheers for your work in line

    Hi Mark,
I like the way you present your reviews and as you have reviewed a couple of the UWA lenses, I have a question for you, seeking your thoughts.
I’m currently shooting with an X-T3 body and have an interest in shooting pano’s, so I have a question. Current wide lens is the 14 2.8 and for wider frame the 10-24 XF zoom. As I’ll be shooting at 16x9 format, what would your thoughts be on trying one of the 9mm Ultra Wides available, the Fuji 8mm is out of my reach.

I love these lenses, but real estate with any ultra wide, even 16mm, is borderline a scam. I live in a tiny apartment, with very small rooms and a small hallway. If I photograph my rooms with a ultra wide, I can make the rooms and hallway look huge, and overall, the apartment will look much, much, much more roomy than it actually is.

How to put in a Pentax K-mount ? Adaptor ?

    • @DavidWood2
      @DavidWood2 3 месяца назад

You can only adapt a lens to a mount with a smaller flange distance than the mount on the lens so that there is physical room for the adapter. The greatest flange distance of the mounts that this lens is available for are L-mount or RF mount at 20mm. K-mount is 45.46mm flange distance.
SLR mounts have a greater flange distance than mirrorless mounts to allow for the mirror. Mirrorless mounts use a smaller flange distance to keep the size of the system smaller. This means that you cannot adapt a mirrorless lens to an SLR, but you can adapt an SLR mount lens to a mirrorless mount.
The consequence of all this is that you cannot adapt this lens for use on any SLR.

Just my 2 cents on an aspect of this that was overlooked or not really talked about. While these rectilinear lenses preserve the linear lines they almost always destroy the human figure at the edges that slight barrel distortion, for some reasons, seems to soften a little more. I think the correct lens is more subjective to what one is trying to do with it. If the goal is boxy architecture then rectilinear are by far the best option, but if one is looking for story telling lens then the option becomes more subjective, and based more off what creates the look and feel one is after for a given narrative. The important thing is this look was not really an option before, where as now we have it, and thus have more choices.

No, I use ultra-wide angle lens all the time because I use 4K camera and I crop in 1080p so I can stick myself on the left and right of the screen. I switched to Mokose C100 13MP 4K30 HDMI camera ($142.50 on eBay right now) with GoPro-style sensor and I use a 2.1mm no distortion M12 lens I got for $30 on eBay from China and I couldn't be happier. I own 8 of them and am getting 6 more, and I did not break the bank. I recommend you buy the 3.2mm lens model. I bought the C100 with the zoom lens used on eBay, sold the lens, removed the IR cut filter (easy but can break PCB), bought 3.2mm no distortion lens, and sold the 3.2mm lens on eBay; not worth it, get the 3.2mm model, but I didn't know when I bought. You want to unscrew the 3.2mm lens, remove the lens and metal focus ring, and replace with 2.1mm lens keeping spring under it, and it works very good and maintains focus.

    • @bodinian

Look up "Bury the Lead" and why you shouldn't do it. It's not building tension, it's annoying the audience. You have good content; you don't need to do this.

Frankly the video taken with the lens doesn't look good at all. Too much distortion over too big an area
