_before move 14_ *me* I'd play Qc2 *John* Qc2 is lame *me* :( *John* let's play that *me* :) *John* I'm pretty sure I misplayed it, starting with Qc2 *me* :( _post game analysis_ *John* the computer seems to like Qc2 *me* :)
Participating in my first tournament tomorrow morning in Kenosha, WI, and instead of sleeping I'm watching your videos, John! Thank you for inspiring me for the past year and a half!
+John Bartholomew I went 2.0/5, I won two attacking games but lost my other three mostly due to poor time management. I kept on forgetting to hit the clock :/
Hello John, First of all, thanks for your videos. They are awesome and help me a lot! I’m 16 and started playing chess about a year ago… Before watching your videos my rating was around 300 (yeah, I wasn’t so good haha), but after I discovered your channel, I was able to raise it up to 1150. However, I still feel like my game is a bit oscillatory. For example, some days I play very well and win almost every game. But on another day I make blunders, hang pieces… This is really annoying, because I'm never able to raise my rating, I'm always stuck on 1000 to 1200. So, I was wondering if you have any tip or suggestion that could help to make my games more consistent. Thanks again and greetings from Brazil! P.S.: Sorry for my bad english :)
+Cristiano Junior Hello, Cristiano Junior! Thanks for checking in from Brazil :) It's tough, but I would recommend trying to pay as little attention as possible to the oscillations of your rating. Inevitably in chess you will bounce around in rating, though you should notice trends over time. It's most important to refine your thought process. Make that your goal instead of analyzing your rating ups and downs. Good luck!
Happy New Year John - obviously you can't get to all requests, but hoping in the future you could possibly do another chess tactics training video with chesstempo. Thanks!
13:10 this is what happens in chess, thankyou john, the amount of times ive calculated several moves deep in so many differerent variations that look good only to play a different conservative move that I could have played after 20 seconds, my team mates critize me for taking so long over obvious moves, and that's why I lose on the clock basically every game, but im not spending a long time on obvious moves (usually) its because im working out some wako line that im trying to get to work but doesn't, having said that, the amount of times ive spent thinking of a good move and then finding a really good winning move because of that extra time spent is also high, ! I guess these are the conundrums of a chess player that looses on the clock a lot ! but then playing quick logical obvious moves also has its draw backs, dam this game man, lets go and play snap and get drunk instead !!!
+mcpartridgeboy Haha, you described the time dilemmas for so many tournament chess players. I'm envious of those who never seem to experience time pressure...
Hey John, What do you think about the benefits of studying the classical greats? I can't particularly recall you ever mentioning it, but was curious on your thoughts.
+Jacob Tarallo A "must" if you want to improve. I'd start with a World Champion whose games/style you admire. If you can get your hands on a collection of their self-annotated games that's ideal.
+Matthew Balter Hey, Matthew! It's the 1st UTRGV GM-norm Chess Tournament, and it's going on at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Here is the game broadcast: monroi.com/watch/?tnm_id=1853
Bad strain of luck, which hopefully ends with this new year; get well John! And quick question: For training, should I play against a chess engine (I have Houdini) on a strength set around mine, or should I just play against other people online? Thanks in advance
+TheIdeaExchange Thanks, TheIdeaExchange! I would recommend playing other humans online. I'm not a big fan of playing against engines unless it's from specific positions.
another comment post game, dam nice end game sir !!!! wowzers I learnt a lot and im slowly agreeing with your moves, what I mean is the more I think like you the more I become a chess player, love positional chess for all us 30 plus chess beginers you and ce are amazing ! thanks !!! im drunk sorry !
Hey, happy new year! I've not watched through yet so I don't know if you mention jt, but is 19. Qg4 an idea, setting up a discovered attack on d4 and introducing Bxh7? Thanks for all your efforts in 2015:)
Hi John! At 38m17s - what if you took with the rook first on move 17? If black recaptures you take the pawn with check (and a fork on the c8 rook). Is 18. Rxf2 too big of a threat or is there a way to parry it?
+buri87 Hey, buri87! I believe so, yes. White would have two rooks for the queen, but his coordination looks poor (bishop not yet developed, rooks far away from each other).
Bummer about the cold. Wash hands often, especially in the airport. Don't touch tray table or magazines on the plane. Don't touch your face. Get sleep so your body can fight the cold.
How come there aren't any titled players in the standard pool? Also, wouldn't your own OTB chess benefit from playing higher rated players in a longer time control?
+isaac10231 Certainly it would. I think most titled players are just playing online for fun and a little bit of practice, and they may not want to invest 30+ minutes to play a more serious game. It's kind of baffling that there is so little interest, but online blitz/bullet reign supreme.
+Jason Trivium Hey, Jason - thanks for checking out my channel! This is the BlitzIn interface for the ICC (Internet Chess Club). Happy New Year to you as well.
+John Bartholomew Thanks so much for letting me know. :) I really enjoyed your analysis of the game, you did an excellent job explaining things. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos in the future.
+David Mbonu I dunno, I like being able to fire up a game quickly and start recording. I'm happy to play subscribers/viewers, but I'm probably not going to provide advance warning of when I'm in the 5-minute/15-minute pools etc.
+dave-o Hey, Dave! Late reply, sorry. The organizers have been having trouble with the broadcast, so they're relaying the games on Monroi as well. I think the chessbomb relay is also working (strangely I can't access chessbomb from here at UTRGV!). Hope all is well with you - I'll be in touch.
And how exactly are you trying to improve your game, Fins? Your endgames seems to be GM-like already - right? Sidenote (not relevant of course): It has been said, in the past you were able to go to Hungary or at that time USSR countries and actually buy your titles kinda. Maybe so they were organizing some tournament and let you win.. or whatever.. :) And yeah, better luck with the virii and bacterias in the future :)
+Cacalari Bus Ha, well I've heard about those type of tournaments, but I don't think any respectable chess player would like to achieve their IM/GM title in such a manner. As far as improving my own game, I'm mostly trying to work on my time management, openings, and calculation. It's difficult, but I'm making progress.
John Bartholomew If I were your coach, I would let you play 200 games vs 2700+. Maybe vs. Eric.. would work too - in order to possibly naturally level in. the other guys you play (the other IM) - you win mostly - so not much to learn :) Learning by losing... the natural way. OK, my amateurish ideas :)
John Bartholomew ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=13401378 he has something open with me. I try to contact him (just have to figure out how, since he is not on chessbase anymore where we made a deal once) - then he might want play some 15min games or so :) .. but how to contact.. I found him: store3.chessclub.com/teacher-gguseinov
good luck in Texas John, im jelous id love to go to texas that and Detroit (as a photographer) !!! man 2500 being sick is real good work man ! I also think 2600 is too high for a gm in my opinion most gms are about 2500 ! I love your attitude of just getting better, I want to too, but im 35 and still have an unknown fide rating that's somewere between 1600-1950 ahah beginners inconsistency, but I prefere to lose and learn than win and teach ! that is while im still under 50 !

+z17seattle Happy New Year, z17seattle! Thanks for the support :)

I have a tournament in Seattle tomorrow morning and I'm up watching his videos!
+Lukas Peterson Nice, Lukas! I'm happy to help :) How did your tournament go, by the way?
+z17seattle ! How'd you do?
+John Bartholomew I went 2.0/5, I won two attacking games but lost my other three mostly due to poor time management. I kept on forgetting to hit the clock :/
+Lukas Peterson Not bad for your very first event. Keep going!
love your videos man!!! you are a rock star !!!!!

Do a simul pleeeeeeease
+Milad Ibrahim Will do some time in the beginning of 2016. Stay tuned.
need to get you in shape john. get some stamina before your next tournament.
+Devvan Butler also john maybe after each game you need to go take a bath in a hot tub. chess is very strenuous , hard on the mind and body.
+Devvan Butler john. you missed the checkmate at move 69. can spot it.
+Devvan Butler If only I had time for that in the course of a normal tournament :)
