Òran an Ròin / The Song of the Seal

- Опубликовано: 18 окт 2024
- A traditional Gaelic song from the voice of the seal people or selkies. Creatures who were said to shed their seal skin and take on the human form at certain times of the year. Creatures who moved between the parallel worlds of sea and land, but never truly belonging to either. I learned this from the singing of the Rev William Matheson of North Uist/Edinburgh.
Sharing today this stunning piece of filming by Mike Guest Photography who says:
‘The energy i get from the sea is hard to explain. I often feel like I'm part human part selkie the Scottish name for a seal.
I’ve been listing to this track on loop for days now and was humming it as I went into the water. There are so many parallels that relate to my life my work and the way i relate to the word. For now, i can't express it in any more words, but today's film is a reflection of that feeling for you”.
We hope you like it, please feel free to share widely and let us know what you think. Hope this brings you all a moment or two of calm.
Much love,
Julie x

The world needs more Irish and Scottish Gaelic music, singers, and speakers.
This movie's in Gallic. I thought it was a beautiful story and quite suggestive of druidry. ruclips.net/video/Iwdn7VmaH7k/видео.html
And this song is exquisite. ruclips.net/video/RbMU4qfd5mU/видео.html
It needs more irish and scottish people, and a place for them to live, and be preserved.
@@banjod5363 Scottish Gaelic culture is open to anyone willing to immerse themselves in the language, culture, poetry and song. Many Gaels have family roots elsewhere in the world (and maybe speak other languages and have other cultural connections too) but now live in Scotland or Nova Scotia and are part of the Gaelic community. It does not require a blood connection to a Scottish clan.
@@iainmaclabhrainn9226 Yes IT does or are you one who would swamped our land with aliens therfore what the fuck did our ancestors fight for, tae dae awa wae oorsels, Scotland is for the Scots not someone from god kens where. To be Scottish does require a blood connection. SAOR ALBA GU BRATH
Even being the tinyest bit Scottish, I feel like I'm in Scotland every time I hear her sing.
You cannot imagine how the planet desperately needs you...and so are we...thanks....🌹🎶✨🍀
Sorry? I am confused. What has this awesome song have to do with this disease breeding planet?
@@josephplunkett1459 simply that she's a bright expression that came from afar...(or God if you prefer).. and with her gift by tuning her life with nature and the planet could effect him and lift up us all...
Thanks for asking and giving me the possibility to dwell and explain...🎶👍
... I don't understand the language but her song and voice are very beautiful and soothing...Thank You!🙂,♥️...
.... What language is it!??🤔...
@@ronremley2864 Scottish Gaelic...👍
A sea maid sings on yonder reef
The spell-bound seals draw near
A lilt that lures beyond belief
Mortals enchanted hear
Chorus (after each verse):
Coir an oir an oir an eer o
Coir an oir an oir an eer o
Coir an oir an oir an ee lalyuran
Coir an oir an eer o
The wandering plowman halts his plow
The maid her milking stays
Sheep on hillside, bird on bough
Pause and listen in amaze
Was it a dream? Were all asleep?
Or did she cease her lay?
The seals with a splash dive into the deep
The world goes on, yet lingers the refrain
Julie Fowlis, your music is so soothing, your a light in a dark tunnel for people who need music like this
A movie on this issue is The Secret of Roan Inish I definitely recommend
It's a great film.
That is one of my favorite movies! That is the movie that instilled in me a love for Irish/Scottish/Celtic music I think.
I totally recommend it too! A quiet, powerful, haunting movie with beautiful photography.
@@MobyDicksWife Yes. Actually I wish there were more movies from Ireland like that. Ireland has a wealth of material with Ulster and Fennian cycles, and that's just scratching the surface.
yeah, I'm way overdue for a re-watch
Òran gu math brèagha 🎶, tha mi a ’bruadar a dhol a dh’Èirinn agus Alba 🏴🇮🇪💚💙
Voice of an angel.
I listen to this daily because as a scot it calls to my heart. So much lost, thank you Julie for keeping our true culture alive.
Bòidheach! ❤❤❤
I was watching sea lions hunt for Salmon on the shallows yesterday, I can't wait to watch them do just the same in the Atlantic
Heart stirring song! Brought tears to my eyes! ❤️🏴
Julie. Your voice captures my heart. Your Bothan Àirigh am Bràigh Raithneach is a daily must for me. I have a dream to see you live in concert...One day(!)
Learning these songs has helped so much with my Gaelic, and they speak to my heart. Thank you so much 💙
I so love your music and I am falling in love with my ancestral language because of you. Thank you so much! My ancestors hail from the Grant and Gunn clans, and I am ever-more interested in the highlands and orkney islands, learning our stories and folk songs.
Breathtaking! 💞🌸🎶 I love these beautiful pieces which are based on Scottish mythology. They are haunting and beautiful.
Thank you for your beautiful interpretation of this song. Your performance is angelic and it's a perfect companion on a quiet walk by my home on the Shenandoah river.
Close my eyes and sailed away in quiet quarantine... Tapadh Leat
Just amazing... reminds me the beautiful "the song of the sea" irish animated film
Oh wow... I haven't heard a voice that can move me like this since I discovered Sandy Denny.
Truly magical.
Mystically beautiful!
Virtual hugs to you from Chicago...
Thanks from France!
Thanks from U.S.
This is basically a perfect piece of music. I don't understand a word of Scottish Gaelic but it doesn't matter, somehow the singing and the instrumentation transports me to a different time and place. So haunting and beautiful. Thank you Julie Fowlis!
Thanks! To Mike, we get to (well not this year) the Pacific in the Spring (from home in Minnesota and I always find the sight and sound of the waves are a books worth of words and expressions that still would not begin to describe the feeling. Keep smiling!
Makes me think of Song of the Sea, which is a cute animated film about the same concept.
Such a lovely film :) ♥
It has a Gaelic version too (it’s Irish Gaelic rather than Scots Gaelic though)
@@pikachucetthesecond4296 It has been broadcast in Scottish Gaelic on BBC Alba as well.
Julie's music takes me to another place and I find a calming magic to her voice. Although I do not understand the language, I do understand the emotion behind the words. She is a wonderfully gifted singer.
This is an awesome song, great music and vocalist is hauntingly great.
Truly beautiful. 💕
If you can listen to Julie sing this wonderful song with the Unthanks. It was broadcast on the BBC Alba Station 4 years ago on the sublime Port programmes. The singing and harmonies are unnervingly beautiful. Julie is a true treasure.

I'm cameroonian for Africa, and I am completely in love with gaelic irish culturee language history music. I wish to hear your music in your land
this is scottish gaelic, not irish :)
Beautiful, haunting.
One of the comments mentions how beautiful and "soothing" this song (by you, Julie Fowlis) is. I would like to add the nuance and vocal expression,... and the wonderful Scottish Gaelic (I wish I spoke it) are so subtly beautiful one cannot fail to be moved. Tapadh leat gu dearbh❤️🎶🏴
Great to watch & hear Thanks Julie :)

Lyrics:
Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Hò i hò i hì o hì
Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Cha robh mi m' ònar a-raoir
(Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Hò i hò i hì o hì
Hò i hò i hì o hò i,
I was not alone last night.)
'S mairg san tìr seo, 's mairg san tìr
'G ithe dhaoine 'n riochd a bhìdh
Nach fhaic sibh ceannard an t-sluaigh
Goil air teine gu cruaidh cruinn
(Pity to be in this place,
Where people are eaten as food.
See the chief of the people of the people,
Boiling hard on a fire)
Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Hò i hò i hì o hì
Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Cha robh mi m' ònar a-raoir
'S mise nighean Aoidh mhic Eòghainn
Gum b' eòlach mi mu na sgeirean
Gur mairg a dhèanadh mo bhualadh
Bean uasal mi o thìr eile
(I am the daughter of Aoidh son of Eòghainn,
I was knowledgeable about the reefs.
Pity the person who would hit me,
I am a noble woman from another land.)
Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Hò i hò i hì o hì
Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Cha robh mi m' ònar a-raoir
Thig an smeòrach, thig an druid
Thig gach eun a dh'ionnsaigh nid
Thig am bradan thar a' chuain
Gu Là Luain cha ghluaisear mis'
(The thrush comes, the starling comes,
Every bird returns to its nest.
The salmon comes from the sea,
Until Doom’s Day I will not be moved.)
Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Hò i hò i hì o hì
Hò i hò i hì o hò i
Cha robh mi m' ònar a-raoir
so beautiful!! Thank you xxxxx
