As a PC gamer this was really interesting (part 1 especially). Cool to see what kind of hardware is inside and how the layout compares to a laptop or desktop. Thanks Steve.
Dammit, The whole reason I sat through 12 minutes was to see the inside of the HD rumble device which never got opened. I wanna know how those ice cubes work. :(
even tho you are not a console gamer or aficionado you do a pretty good job of disassemble and explaining what all the chips and function are. good job .
Glad to see your channel doing well and growing :) You make quality content! Keep it up :) Just one tip for these teardown videos: use an object (like a pen or screw driver) instead of you fingers to point at things. Your hand can (and will) obscure the view.
As someone already mentioned, the hd rumble is the block near the IR camera. Saw similar blocks on a Pro controller teardown. I'd be interested in seeing your version of the pro teardown though, as you spend a little more time on the details.
Lots of graphics cards over the past year. Plus AIO cooler installs on those cards. Hoping the Switch gets a similar treatment since it's already torn down, and the cooling solution seems sub-optimal.
That little flat part you pulled out with the snap connector looks to be an antenna to me most likely for the bluetooth or however they are connecting them. The NFC is probably on the PCB :)
honestly the dock is VERY dissapointing, without trying to be a dick it feels like a waste of space. They could have put so much more sweet goodies in there. At least an upscaler or a Parallel Processor so you can have 60+FPS on the TV and 30 as a mobile device. I thought at first it was like that, turns out its just a better raspberri PI. or iPad with extras. Sad really. Anyway thanks for taking it apart and solving some of the mystery, also a big thanks to hello games and No Mans Sky since they helped me not to jump onto the Hypetrain.
There are reasons why this would be a bad idea: 1. It would easily raise the price and extra 200 2. The power of the console mode would ruin the idea of the Switch's games being able to be played anywhere due to games potentially requiring the extra power from the dock to function. This isn't what Nintendo wants and for a good reason. It's a bad decision 3. People are already complaining about the dock being overpriced [seriously? It comes in the damn box]. This would just make that price so much worse, and inaccessible to a lot of people. This would be forcing it to be an addon, which, again, Nintendo doesn't want. They specifically said that this could be played wherever, and they cut so many corners to be able to achieve that. Our ideologies would be far worse off than most people would like to believe, so what they did with the dock is perfectly acceptable This is all assuming you even could find a way to put external hardware into the dock, and have a sufficiently fast communication speed to be able to fully utilize it, which just isn't possible
the usb type c connection supports up to 10 gbps, it could support a gpu compatable with x5 pci-e compatability.. so get something from nvidia they will still make throughout the switches life, only for upscaling the image, leaving a cheap solution to allow smooth fps in most games EDIT: they could release another dock with a seperate gpu for more, giving people the option, similar to the joy-con grips, ones just a hunk of plastic, the other has charging..
For the antenna, if it multiple circular traces then it is likely NFC, but if it is a a PCB with a large solid tract, or a short trace, then it is Bluetooth.
Hey gamer nexus Does The cost of manufacturing and materials match the price tag of the switch? iirc the ps3 when it came out cost like $800 and sony was selling each console at a loss.
The Switch most definitely justifies its pricetag in hardware alone. The battery probably costs Nintendo ~$30-40. The Joycons probably cost them ~$20 each. With these as time rolls on, production will be cheaper for them. The power brick, assuming it is of good quality (as it likely is), would cost them $15. The dock probably ran $20. The Tegra Chip itself was probably $40-60 per unit. The screen was likely $50-70. The cost of the system software (the operating system) is evaluated as units sold not per unit, but you could say it takes up ~7 GB of system space, which is like ~$5 of storage. The on-board EMMC flash was ~$7. The on-board wireless adapter was probably $10. The system memory was probably $50. The enclosure & thermal solution was probably $15. The Joycon Grip was likely $15. For this, cost will decrease as time goes on. Things like the SD card reader (game cart reader & expandable storage), USB controller, speakers, audio jack and chipset, likely total $15. Then cost of assembly. Cheaper as time goes on, but probably $30 per unit. Add in then the cost of the included cables, $7. About $300 just TO MAKE. Then there's the price of shipping. I have no doubt this console is being sold at a deficit. Not a huge one, but one.
That battery might cost 40 or 50 for you to buy one but bulk wholesale it's $10 US tops. Hell, I could buy a battery right now with the same specs, just a different form factor and connectors for about $15
smokeydops Nah, they're screwing people over. We already knew the dock was overpriced, but $90 for something that probably runs $20? Nintendo's not even using any lube!
It isn't so much the raw specifications of the battery. It is the quality of the battery; heat rating of the cells, charge cycles, number of cells, and the charging circuit. You can obviously spend chump change and get an equivalent battery, but it won't be the same. The same goes for any part.
dude you are talking like if the parts and assembly were made in the USA lmao, those prices you put are ridiculous. 40$ battery? 20$ Joycon? 30$ assembly? Tou are clearly taking those numbers out of your ass
We dont come for the content itself anymore. We are all here to praise Steve's Master Hair! ALL PRAISE STEVE'S MASTER HAIR! Thumbs up all the believers!!!
the ice cube analogy is supposed to be a feature on the controller that is supposed to feel like there are actually ice cubes based on where the rumble happens
Good video, but you probably should have opened the left joy-con and compared the differences. I think the hd rumble might be the white plastic thingy at the bottom (that would be some clever engineering to make it feel like it's rumbling at different parts of the joy-con). You probably ignored it, thinking it is the IR sensor, cos you didn't open the left joy-con and find it sitting there too. Also, apart from the NFC, did you find anything responsible for Bluetooth or other form of wireless communication? Or does that Broadcom chip also handle Bluetooth, not just NFC? Is the left joy-con using a different chip?
Hi Steve, will the Ryzen 1700 review be out soon? I've been hearing reports of overclocking up to 4GHz and lower temps than the 1800x, which if true must make it a waaaay better buy than the more expensive chips.
+Gamers Nexus Thanks for another interesting video. After watching it I wondered if You maybe should consider using a "fixed bench camera" that You could work under ((just framing the work area)). That way You would have an "automatic" B-roll set up for "perfect detail shots" such as "serial numbers" and "complex mounting arrangements" ...Just a thought Best regards....ehh and good luck with Your reassembly :)
I'm not usually one for modding consoles, but shit; seeing how simple the tech in the dock is and how easy it looks to remove, I might take a stab at designing my own custom dock.
that board you thought was for NFC was the wireless antenna to connect to the switch. can you take apart the other controller to see if they are in different positions. the left controller has connectivity issues
After watching this tear-down and after some reports that some owners had scratched screens "from the dock"; I wonder if that was caused by them inserting the switch into the base backwards with the screen facing the opposite direction...
hi! i´m noticing that my joycons while they´re attached to the grip they´re kinda loose in the bottom is not so bad but they´re loose enough to make a "clicking noise, any idea what could this be and how to fix it?
have u thought of putting a time lapsed *putting all back together* part at the end? that would be amazing :D and u have to put it back together anyways or at least for most hardware (rip aio coolers) just an idea.
Great teardown man. I noticed there was some kind of debug / test pads on the Dock. Would you happen to have a close up of that or a high res of the board? Thanks!
I think I will try the LiquidSky service thing that was presented at the Radeon event for RX Vega then buying a Nintendo Switch. I like the Switch concept of having a portable console but I think the execution was poor. If I can play any PC game on a IPad, Surface, or Android tablet at 1080P using LiquidSky then the service is worth it. Would love to see a video by you on LiquidSky.
+Jesse Rodriguez The execution is mostly fine, and LiquidSky isn't really the same thing. The Switch is powering the game , while LS is just streaming the controls, audio, and video to your device from host machine, powering the cloud. It's basically Netflix, but video games isntead of TV. Though I imagine to play anything good you will have to carry a controller type thing around with you. As well the quality of the stream is reliant on your connection to the internet by wifi or a mobile provider and connection to the host server.
curious fact: at 10:24 near the Home button you can see a LED (wich is blue), not functional at the moment but someone discovered a way to put that light on (also in the pro controller)
Basically, Jesus is saying : "I'll shove all that shit in a box without bother putting it back together, and get on the real stuff, 1080ti and ryzen boiss".
Think Nintendo really missed the chance to beef up the system with an external GPU. I'm not an engineer but I would think it to be possible and give the system higher performance when docked.
easily or even 199.99 most the tech in the system is pretty low end, dock is most disappointing they are asking 90 when its like 15-25 dollars of tech there.
$200 is the price of the new 3ds xl, the hardware in the 3ds is ancient, yet its still selling for $200, the switch has a fair price considering the hardware..
If I ran Nintendo I'd of put 3 gig CPU and GPU in tablet it also would be bigger with Joycons and dock station would have 4 gig CPU and GPU . Nintendo should have made it with a comparable power as modern systems.
They charge 90 dollars for that dock. Oof. At least it looks like third party ones with more features may come in likely at under that price, if it's over USB 3 C.
I guess the rumour about extra cooling in the dock wasn't true. So did they choose a lower resolution in handheld mode to conserve battery or was it to keep the price down on the screen?
HOW THE FUCK does the HD rumble work. people have said it feels so "PERFECT" like there really are balls IN THE JOY-CON. (reference to the "box of balls" game in 1,2 Switch)
Thanks for watching! See part 1 here: ruclips.net/video/obz5tE1mdV0/видео.html
Should we expect at least a short vlog of the *odyssey* with putting it all together?
ps: pun intended.
100K subs!
Keep doing great work. Been here since the early days, glad to see you hit 100k Congrats ! Also, you guys are in my state as well :)
Thanks for taking it apart and hope you can put it back together to enjoy what you took a look at ^^.
Gamers Nexus Pls do a ps4 pro video
The "HD Rumble" is the white square. Not the IR Camera. The camera is down the "HD Rumble"
love to see how that works!
I fucking lost it at
"there's the switches"
*fingersnap*
Timestamp?
10:37
Don't worry I found it when i finished watching the video, thanks anyway.
Lol, I loved the "switch" sound effects added.
As a PC gamer this was really interesting (part 1 especially). Cool to see what kind of hardware is inside and how the layout compares to a laptop or desktop. Thanks Steve.
Where are the ice cubes?
Fruit Punch Maybe his were defective for having already been melted...
They're in the blue controller only :-)
what? ice cubes? haven't watched the vid yet lol
Benjaman2000 google joycon ice cube.
I think The rumble pack / Vibrators are in the white small part with the camera
Nintendo lied to us there is no ice cubes in the joycon
Speedrider Didn't he say the Joy Cons are like a Glass full of ice cubes Cuzz of the Motion Controls
+Specter
No, he said there were cubes (in) the system.
oh okay
Under No Condition Bahahahahaha you crack me up 😂 😂
There it is, the famous 20fps tablet
Hey! It can do 30 sometimes.
Sorry bruh xD
Benchmarks incoming?
There he is, the famous anti-nintendo troll in a nintendo teardown
Let's be real, Zeldaing on the toilet is 100% worth 20fps.
Dammit, The whole reason I sat through 12 minutes was to see the inside of the HD rumble device which never got opened. I wanna know how those ice cubes work. :(
Same here, man. I wanted to see at least four tiny motors in there.
that switch sound lmao 😂 good video as always, and congrats on the 100k+ subs!
1:30 until ~33. That sound is SOOOO satisfying :> , the lapse between the change in each screw is flawless.
even tho you are not a console gamer or aficionado you do a pretty good job of disassemble and explaining what all the chips and function are. good job .
It's sad to know that an extra Switch Dock with AC adapter and an HDMI cable will only cost you $90...
£130 here
Glad to see your channel doing well and growing :) You make quality content! Keep it up :) Just one tip for these teardown videos: use an object (like a pen or screw driver) instead of you fingers to point at things. Your hand can (and will) obscure the view.
"There's your switches" (Snap echoes in the distance)
congrats on 100k! I subbed at 16k and its been a journey
RedcatPlaysGames same, I can't believe how much they've grown in a year. Well deserved though. His work during the 1080 launch really paid off.
As someone already mentioned, the hd rumble is the block near the IR camera. Saw similar blocks on a Pro controller teardown. I'd be interested in seeing your version of the pro teardown though, as you spend a little more time on the details.
This. Channel. Is. Amazing.
Nintendo thought of everything. Everything is tight fitted and without waste. Amazing!
GZ! on 100k Subs!!!
Love these tear down videos :)
I am new to the channel but I hope this is a normal thing.. tear down of anything electronic is fun to watch.
Lots of graphics cards over the past year. Plus AIO cooler installs on those cards. Hoping the Switch gets a similar treatment since it's already torn down, and the cooling solution seems sub-optimal.
toy machine awesome! I'll have to check some of those out. Thanks for letting me know.
I can't wait to see him put it all back together. And if it still works.
11:55 Steve's brain breaks. Trying to find info about the Switch revision. Thanks for the great video
This is interesting and all but when is the Ryzen 7 1700 review dropping?
compufirststore he said they're targeting Monday
That little flat part you pulled out with the snap connector looks to be an antenna to me most likely for the bluetooth or however they are connecting them. The NFC is probably on the PCB :)
Aww nice an unboxing video!
You Bumped the table while walking away, nice :D

the tegra chip they are using doesn't allow it to switch over to an external GPU. they couldn't put one in the dock.

Before you assemble the Dock back together make sure you add a felt cloth or something so you don't scratch the Switch screen.
editing, like 5:46 always cracks me up
btw doing awesome work guys

That ribbon cable on the USB/HDMI board looks like a ZIF connector, heck it looks the same as the 40 pin ZIF connectors on old iPods.
i think that item is a induction charger like smartphones wireless charging, I haven't seen anything about contacts on the rails.
the ice cube analogy is supposed to be a feature on the controller that is supposed to feel like there are actually ice cubes based on where the rumble happens
I've never understood why people teardown and take apart expensive tech, until i started doing it myself. Its to learn.
Eryn They get this stuff for free to show us how it works and lookalike. And that’s important for users.
Good video, but you probably should have opened the left joy-con and compared the differences.

I reckon the HD rumble comes from certain frequencies in the vibrator-motor being able to resonate at different lengths within the joycon itself.
Hi Steve, will the Ryzen 1700 review be out soon? I've been hearing reports of overclocking up to 4GHz and lower temps than the 1800x, which if true must make it a waaaay better buy than the more expensive chips.
Yes. We have interesting findings. Targeting Monday. Had to delay it.
Nice one :) Many thanks, you guys are doing some fine work there.
The NFC antenna is in the right thumb stick :)
At 8:30 that isn't NFC. It's more likely the Bluetooth for connection to the switch
A video attempting to put the console back together would be interesting, even if you end up not being able to do it correctly.
Kinda disappointing, the quality of that dock.
Just looks so plasticky.
Like, I get it does nothing, but id just expect more after the buildup.
Robert Skarżyński well considering aluminum would've costed them like .23 cents more, i'd rather have metal sitting underneath my TV
that could very well have interfered with the bluetooth signal to the controllers
Beef Ingot Who cares if it's plastic as long as it functions it's not a problem.
+Gamers Nexus

Why Gamer nexus has 103,000 subs but it is very popular and more profesional than other channels?
I'm not usually one for modding consoles, but shit; seeing how simple the tech in the dock is and how easy it looks to remove, I might take a stab at designing my own custom dock.
I'm so glad that it isn't my Switch because I would have NO idea how to put it back together.
Interesting to see what the inside looks like though.
that board you thought was for NFC was the wireless antenna to connect to the switch. can you take apart the other controller to see if they are in different positions. the left controller has connectivity issues

Nintendo is crazy charging 90 bucks for this piece of plastic, pass-through and three connectors.
have u thought of putting a time lapsed *putting all back together* part at the end?
that would be amazing :D and u have to put it back together anyways or at least for most hardware (rip aio coolers)
just an idea.
thanks was just wondering why no one was tearing down the dock
Takeaway: HD Rumble is magic
Great teardown man. I noticed there was some kind of debug / test pads on the Dock. Would you happen to have a close up of that or a high res of the board? Thanks!
"There go all the buttons", if I could like it again I would...
U a clown for that one 10:37 lmaoooo
The inside of the dock looks great for a small drug stash.
10 years behind technology in this day and age LUL I'm nintendo!
Would it be an issue to find and show data sheets for the ICs or link them for teardowns?
I think I will try the LiquidSky service thing that was presented at the Radeon event for RX Vega then buying a Nintendo Switch. cant u build your own dongle with the inside of the dock?
My right red joycon battery drains faster than the left one do you know the reason for this in your opinion?
Did it all work after you put it back together?

Maybe a special gift for a Patreon donor.
Can already tell modders will try to make a portable dongle out of the dock's pcb
Looks like the HD rumble is connected via the 2-wire connector that runs to the IR module
Part at 08:03 is an antenna of some sorts, not NFC probably bluetooth or Wi-Fi
Think Nintendo really missed the chance to beef up the system with an external GPU. I'm not an engineer but I would think it to be possible and give the system higher performance when docked.
Were you able to reassemble the whole system?
The thing you thought is for nfc looks like a Patch antenna (probably for Bluetooth) to me, correct me if I'm wrong
10:37 YOU DIDNT JUST SAY THAT
Yes he did it's not a bad scentence did he do a crime?
Stupid bitch
HD rumble is the white thing on the bottom of the l joycon. Its next to the camera on the r joycon
this shouldnt be worth 300 dollars it should of been 249.99
easily or even 199.99 most the tech in the system is pretty low end, dock is most disappointing they are asking 90 when its like 15-25 dollars of tech there.
$200 is the price of the new 3ds xl, the hardware in the 3ds is ancient, yet its still selling for $200, the switch has a fair price considering the hardware..
kyotheman69 You cheapskate lol 😂 😂
If I ran Nintendo I'd of put 3 gig CPU and GPU in tablet it also would be bigger with Joycons and dock station would have 4 gig CPU and GPU . Nintendo should have made it with a comparable power as modern systems.
I can see this going in the bin as is (torn down) , haha
what you thought was nfc reader was the wifi antennae. same one used inside the ds lite
how is the analog stick?
wonder if we can take look at the joycon that keeps disconnecting and find out why its happening
why is the dock empty wouldn't Nintendo put a GPU in dock to enhance console playing. or double CPU one in dock an other n tablet.
I think the HD Rumble is similar to apples Taptic Engine
Is it possible to switch (from the console) the battery with more capacity
The white rectangle in the hd rumble pack
They charge 90 dollars for that dock. Oof. At least it looks like third party ones with more features may come in likely at under that price, if it's over USB 3 C.
Isn't that white block in the controller the HD rumble?
haha ,you sound so uninterested with taking it apart. I wouldn't blame you. Useful to someone I'm sure.
25 mAh battery... I think you meant to say 525 mAh...
How does it feel as a man to have all that nice wavy hair?
I guess the rumour about extra cooling in the dock wasn't true. So did they choose a lower resolution in handheld mode to conserve battery or was it to keep the price down on the screen?
Probably a mix of both. Battery if I had to guess, since that's the biggest thing people were looking for good specs on.
Weird, I expected the dock to have some sort of processing or something.
the hd rumble looks like it's on the bottom of the joycon. it looks like it has the ridged surface.
$20 shipping from ifixit ruined the deal.. they need to get their shipping costs under control.. too bad it ruined the sale :(
mwmdragon I bought mine at Microcenter because of This.
why not put an external GPU in that base so that you can upscale?
HOW THE FUCK does the HD rumble work. people have said it feels so "PERFECT" like there really are balls IN THE JOY-CON. (reference to the "box of balls" game in 1,2 Switch)
Sorcery, obviously
should've put another gpu in the base to crossfire when in tv mode. no wonder it struggles to push 1080.
Right under the IR camera, isn't that the rumble ?
