Do you think the G6 with its 52-calibre barrel can rival modern wheeled self-propelled howitzers and truck-mounted howitzers in the international market?

Thanks for uploading my Favorite wheeled Howitzer.
Also India had signed a deal with Denel in the 90s and early 2000s regarding the development of track based SPH for the Indian army using a modified T-6 turret of Denel-G6 Rhino. Earlier proposed on an existing M-46 130mm catapult variant upgrade model, later the Arjun Mk1 Chassis was choosen for this project called "Bhim self propelled howitzer". The gun is also a modified 155mm based on G-5. Unfortunately due to scandals and many controversial allegations, The deal was cancelled and Denel was blacklisted , and removed from that list recently.
Hello Weapons detective. New Suggestion.
Could you please make a Video on the 9K31 Strela-1 / NATO Codename:- SA-9 Gopher?
It is a short range SPAAML based on the chassis of a modified BRDM-2 recon vehicle , armed with 4 9M31 solid fuel , IR/Heat seeker guided Surface to air missiles.
It is the predecessor of the now dating 9K35 Strela 10 SPAAML / NATO code name:- SA-13 Gopher , which is based on a modified MT-LB chassis.
Romania also has a licensed variant called CA-95SPAAML based on TABC- 79 APC.
The Srela-1 is still in use by many countries like Russia (Naval infantry), Serbia, India , Cuba , Mongolia Romania, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine and so on.
I have already uploaded many video materials with links in them. Please do check them .

You are absolutely correct! I saw a couple videos a year or two back where a bunch of black SA mechanics in uniform were standing around a truck needing something done to it and some fat black officer was whining about lack of parts and knowledge. I just laughed my ass off, SA uses common civilian engines so parts are everywhere and affordable. You’ll notice you won’t find a white SA soldier in any of their units since we all know why. I looked a some satellite pics of the SA bases and saw armored vehicles scattered everywhere near the motor pool. The Cubans made a deal to teach those idiots how to fix radios, vehicles and some medical equipment in exchange for something they wanted. I can’t imagine how screwed up the SA Air Force must be since the average IQ of a black person there is 65. Did you notice in this video how for the parades, the G6’s were all on the back of a trailer? Every wonder why they don’t just drive them through the parade route? They winched them onto the trailers for the parades. Such a waste of great technology by giving them to a bunch of primates.
I served in 1985 - 1986 in Mechanized infantry renound as 61 Mechanized.

Just for the record. The first National servicemen of the first G6 battery were trained in 1989 at Potchefstroom. It was 2 Medium battery, 14 Artillery regiment, 10 Artillery Brigade.
An additional interesting fact, pre the formal introduction of the G6,s in to the SADF in 1989) was that the initial 4 prototypes ( 1 broke down so only 3 were deployed) saw action in 1987 already during operation Hooper and was instrumental for bombing the airfield at Cuito Canavale which effectively limited the effectiveness of the Angolan airforce. This rare opportunity to use the prototypes in actual combat, assisted the SADF to make significant improvements to the final product. Ironically the border war ended in 1989 and the G6 was never used by the SADF in combat ever again.
we were testing these in '82 at Potchestroom proof range. Also the G3 was a H&H combat rifle used by SWATF.

I saw 2 G6's live fire in a demonstration outside Potchefstroom in 1988. Didn't realize it was that new back then. Incredible weapons.
My father's friends who were in the South African military told me that these things could shoot so accurate that they can strike a trashcan in an enemy camp from their average firing range.
Edit: I asked what the range was:
61 km!
it hits a 2x2 Meter from 40km !
If the weather service, local storage conditions, equipment and crew are performing top notch you basically have a more accurate gun than your infantry man's sniper rifle.
The accuracy was out of this world. I was 'involved' in doing the survey (land surveying) during testing and the G6 blow our minds with its capabilities and accuracy.
Sounds like brandy & coke kind of experts to me.

In High School we had to manually work out the trajectory of the projectile (math and Science class) These beasts made a huge noise when fired. Mouth open ears closed. Was a lot of fun as a youngster.
That was obviously back in the day when schools actually provided an education unlike the crap they're teaching now. So much was achieved in those days in spite of sanctions. What have we achieved since then?

South Africa's armoured vehicles and self propelled artillery would all suit the needs of the Australian Army as well but the Canberra defence bureaucracy thinks Australia is located either next to the Fulda Gap requiring expensive German vehicles or doesn't really need armoured vehicles at all.
Australia buys the US flavour of the month .
Typical Anglo Politicians
Shouldn't Australia be focusing more to air and sea like Japan? Ballistic missiles and carrier strike group sounds what Australia should have these days.
@@Joshua_N-A Surface navies are very vulnerable and expensive but nevertheless are important to deter, weaken and defeat invasions by hostile expansionist powers. Australia does need to concentrate more on less vulnerable naval assets like submarines and more lower cost but capable surface vessels that utilise long range stealthy anti ship missiles as well as anti air and anti submarine capabilities. The air force is also important and needs to follow a similar path of reducing vulnerability to larger powers. Platforms and weapons need to become more diffuse so that they are more difficult to counter. The army must be able to take on large mechanised forces as well as counter insurgency and everything in between. Ukraine has shown how to fight asymmetrically, and accurate and mobile artillery with good targeting and situational awareness provided by drones and other means such as radar and satellites is the right path for Australia's army.
@@andreasbimba6519 China is the only real threat in the region. Even China would have serious trouble invading Taiwan. Australia would be a nightmare. Australia needs a strong NAVY and submarine fleet. A strong air force as well.
Personally, I do not think a ground invasion of Australia is a real threat. Navy and Air power should be stronger.
The G6 was already built and tested by 1982, as 1 of them was parked at the then 3 Electronics Workshop for a few days in Lyttleton Centurion near Pretoria. We were allowed to actually go have a good look at it and even touch it. Some might have even got inside and on top of it.
It's probably the best mechanised 155m in the world.
We now have an upgraded version called ATAGS in India, ever since we bought the tech. The upgunned variant shot to 48kms - a new record.
Just shows that Africa can design and build world beating technology.

That is a 2017 record.

Kalyani forge which makes the ATAGS now has IPR on the GC5,
Unlike the ATAGS the GC series is heavier and does not have the ATAGs rate of sustained and burst fire.
The ATAGS also is now capable of firing ramjet propelled and American Excalibur/ Indian GPS munitions.
Both which the g6 and g5 cannot
In a comparison between G6 and more modern 155mm Howitzer systems I am convinced that G6 will outperform any wheeled or tracked system cross country in the Arabian Desert or on typical Southern African terrain. Regarding fire power we must compare the G6 Losvoor system with existing foreign systems. Losvoor never went into production as such, but that technology has been incorporated in the German PHZ 2000 firing the South African Assegaai 155mm ammunition system. Thus, to determine how a modern 52 calibre G6 would perform during firing, refer to PHZ 2000 specifications.
several Arabian governments were also convinced that is why they bought several of them 20 years ago
Dankie Faan. Jy verstaan 🤝
Yes. South-Africa provided a quite a couple of superb fighting systems to the world - America included. Apart from the G6 specs that one will find in Rheinmetall arsenals, think about the airforce fighter helmet aiming system that was developed by S.A. and used during the war. Also what about our surface to air, air to air and air to surface missile systems we developed and which the UAE are now the proud owners (just wonder how they got them...??) of.
@@ilikeit2ful the whole chopper (one with helmet aim) was created in South Africa and was among the best, but when the Americans wanted to buy some the French stepped in with their own version and got the USA to buy 1 of theirs call it shit and build their own.
I always thought that the PHZ 2000 closely resembled the G6 and assumed that a covert technological cooperation or a transfer of technology subsequent to the G6s development must have taken place. Thanks for verifying my suspicion.
The Ratel was a grest machine, equiped with 12.00-24 tyres with run flat inserts developed by General tyres in South Africa . These run flat inserts was based on a honeycome design and could take the ratel away from danger with all 8 tyres flat at a speed of 50 kms hr.
The tyres was later upgraded to steel radials with sidewall reinforcement for better endurance.
The US guns that were obtained were obsolete WW2 guns. They were never deployed operationally but fitted with G5 barrels and used for ammunition trails.
In 89 in the mag everyone said the great Brigadier Archie Moore had a hand in designing the G6 , must of heard that 100x
SA's issue was not with the Angolan Army - the issue was SWAPO who moved their bases to Angola after they encountered resistance from the SA police who, at the behset of Namibian villagers investigated murders of villagers. It escalated and the SA Army got involved. FAPLA had an issue with UNITA who were pro western. Cuba decided to intervene and send an estimated 60 000 soldiers to help FAPLA. UNITA was supported by SA with hardware. FAPLA had unlimited supply of Russian weapons, technologically advanced compared to what SA had. SA had no intention or ambition to invade Angola -- that is a BS story. If Cuba stayed out of it and Angola did not Harbour terrorists things would have been very different.

Sadly I think they were largely ignorant as the rules of conflict swayed so far towards air superiority and surgical airstrikes post Iraq v1. The Ukranian battlefield would be an interesting case for the G5/6. No air superiority, and trench based battle lines, with very few fast evolving running battles. A G5/6 could be used to provide rapid supporting fire across a vast swath of combat territory, without coming close enough for counter battery fire to be a thought, let alone a threat.
They weren't worried. They knew the SADF strictly opposed Communism and was of no threat to them. A very clever vehicle 👏
In the past 80 years most of the world 🌎 is covered by roads.
Once you fire 🔥 you batch of shells , you have to run from counter battery fire
Most of the Angolan border War was actually off road. South Africa has had a lot of problems with border conflicts and usually they need to cover large distances quickly. Wheeled vehicles provide a larger range generally speaking vs tracked and the terrain doesn't particularly require a tracked vehicle to traverse. They usually have a faster off road speed and much faster on road speed vs tanks. They can quickly deploy to the conflict and relocate quickly once there in these low intensity conflicts. They also require somewhat less maintenance vs tanks. Really a brilliant vehicle for fighting insurgents and rebels.

In the early 90s during the Gulf War, the newspapers had an entire page of the weaponry used by either side. Iraq had G6s that according to the report said that the G6 outraged the coalitions artillery by about 20kms?
Our Army should buy this Mean Machine
Nice
Well dun. Wery Well put together bravo!!!!!!!
happy memories...
Great weapon.....
We were in the 'deurgangskamp' as relief troops for those that fought Moduler, positioned in Angola close to Rundu.
While there, the G6's, 32 Bn and others camped very close to us, returning to base after operation Moduler.
One G6 had a twisted barrel. From what we were told, the G6's was the most mobile vehicles in the deep sand.
We were told the could comfortably drive 50-60 km/h through thick bush in heaven sands.
One 32 Bn Ratel had a direct hit with a rpg7 on the front window. Halve thickness of the glass, which is multilayered and cm's thick, was blown away and the remainder deformed in a bubble on the inside by the heat of the projectile.
It did not penetrate the vehicle.
Absolutely incredible sight, how close they were to death.
If that rpg struck anywhere else, it would have gone through like a hot knife through butter.
The other Ratel was struck by a mortar on top, next to the front window.
The metal was deformed like an elastic membrane, stretched, with a point load somewhere on the membrane.
The shrapnel from the mortar exploding on top of the rRatel, next to the main front window, sandblasted the front window that you could hardly see through it.
Also a very close call.
Shortly after this, we flew in to Masvingo to replace the troops due for relief.
100.
I was in charge of Kwevoelsnes(The gate where the traffic passed. In short we called the base : Die Hek or "The Gate")RIGHT on the "Rooilyn" or red line between Rundu and Grootfontein in 1987. I got an order to just swing open the gates and leave them be until further instructions...We couldn't understand why and the road was DEAD still for the whole day until...I first heard it and then I saw the aura of MASSIVE lights from Grootfontein. Now remember,we had NO clue. I wasn't even trained and was a special in Jumbo de Villiers police gang. That "other" police. I figured why must the RSA brave young men die while I watch. I was a rebel at school and everything was girls, rugby and athletics. Got SWA cravenweek and was SWA champ in triple jump but things were not good at home.
My dad asked the Koevoet legend if he had a place for me and Jumbo said LET'S GO!
So later on it was clear to us this was an HUGE army contingent and it became clear why W/officer Jumbo said to ask no questions and leave the gate open. The high spirits of the SAA was something I will NEVER forget! I was so proud and just stood still at that gate saluting every vehicle that passed. 12 Elephant tanks on low beds passed and 2 or 3 G6's. I CLEARLY remember telling Sargeant Chitti this scary thing kinda looks like a rat! The salutes from the young soldiers I'll NEVER forget and tears were in my eyes wishing I could join. This was the start of "Ops Moduler". Little did we know what hell would be let loose by these BEST IN THE WORLD warriors! It was one of the proudest days of my life! "ONS VIR JOU SUID AFRIKA" I still miss my black colleagues until this day and will NEVER forget my jogging competition buddy Pasquales's goodbye words : "Fanie, may the road you walk in life be a beautiful road." I miss you buddy...😪😪😪I often pray for those guys.
I went back to school and made my matric in Swakopmund after everything. It was an HONOR to serve my country for a little while in my limited capacity. Something NOBODY can take away from me.
Thank you Jesus for making me a PROUD Boer. Love you all. ♥️🇿🇦🕊️👏🏻👌🏻
Een van daai ratels was n bevels ratel. Ek en drie troepe het n ander een gaan kry op grootfontein.
An excellent weapon for the Australian army
I think I remember that the Australian Army looked at acquiring the G 5 but this was not proceeded with for political reasons.
This thing is completely at home in a scifi movie...
So fly like a G6!
can a G6 take on a tank if it supports it first and cannot therefore fire horizontally at a target if necessary with the right type of ammunition and does it have the necessary targeting system to do such a thing
👍👍👍👊👊
I wonder how the quality of the SADF
Is compared to 30 years ago.
I’d say it’s probably the same trend as many American inner cities 70-80 years ago and now. For the same reason as well.
@@khaldrago911
Yup.
Minor correction... today our defence forces are called the SANDF (South African National Defence Force), during the border war it was called the SADF (South African Defence Force).
Minor difference with a big impact to those for whom it matters.
@@jakesjoubert2192
Thank you for the correction.
Chalk and cheese
Also India had signed a deal with Denel in the 90s and early 2000s regarding the development of track based SPH for the Indian army using a modified T-6 turret of Denel-G6 Rhino. Earlier proposed on an existing M-46 130mm catapult variant upgrade model, later the Arjun Mk1 Chassis was choosen for this project called "Bhim self propelled howitzer". The gun is also a modified 155mm based on G-5. Unfortunately due to scandals and many controversial allegations, The deal was cancelled and Denel was blacklisted , and removed from that list recently.
Yeah Denel has gone to shit. Sad because they were one of if not the best.
It’s a shame what Denel has come to.
The blacks ran that company into the ground now. They can't even pay salaries. That marxism for you. The whites were right about the blacks all along.
Video suggestion. Japanese Kawasaki C-2 and Chinese Y-20.

Supposedly fighting communists? What was supposed about it?
The main concern of the SA was the continued oppression of the majority their population and ‘Fighting Communism’ was just a smoke screen to justify the oppression.
Kind of a mix bag here. South Africa at that time supported the Rhodesian military while Rhodesia was fighting..I think 2 commie forces. One commie force led by the Soviet and the other led by North Korea. Both of the commie forces wanted independent but they don't like each other. So all three forces were killing each other for control. Both commie got aid and support by their supporters. Rhodesia barely got any WEST or ZERO support from the WEST because Rhodesia was also fucked up in their own ways too. As the war rages on it the commies started raiding South Africa so of course SA support Rhodesia but soon SA got slapped with embargo by the UN and the WEST. Of course Rhodesia fell..we all know that part so after that..more and more skirmish and battle started in SA. The WEST and UN barely supported SA while the commie raid SA so SA had to do their own RND and fight its own battles. Too this say SA still has arms embargo in place.
We added the SA-9 to our list. However, it may take some time for us to make a video, as the Russian systems are currently not attracting the attention of the audience as we expected.
Watching this video makes me verry sad, I miss the old South Africa minus apartheid. I just wish we were the best in the world at something again.
my dad was a soldier in the south african defence force. Did 18 months in the field. Has ptsd from it. though he isn't as bad as he used to be many years ago.
Bullshit!
@Dan Stuart Don't worry about keyboard warriors ignorant comments, be proud of your dad. He's a true warrior.
18 months was pre 1980. The border war was just starting to escalate. I was one of the first troeps to be called up for two years, got my papers in 1979.
1980-1981. Lots of base building and patrols, not much action.
@@richardwebb9532 He said: "18 months in the field". i was in the operational area for 18 months from 1990.
Many came back traumitised, but it was never made a big deals of, I'm sure he served his country well, you can be proud of him.
My first night in 4 Veld Regiment 42 Battery, I sneaked out of my tent to have a pee, while looking around not to trip over tent pens I walked into that thing's front wheel, it was huge. How we never heard it park next to our tent i don't know. I ended up at the G5's
Another excellent video. The G6 was designed after the 152 mm SpGH DANA. Is there any info on the South Africans were influenced by this project?
We could not reach such an info
The G6 is a 100% South African design and has no correlation with the DANA. Remember form follows function.
@@Militaryheritage Thanks
@@Militaryheritage and the artillery technology was developed by a Canadian who was subsequently assassinated allegedly by mossad in Luxembourg but there rumblings it was Iranian intelligence. He refused to sell the technology to Israel but SA and the Israelis were close allies so the tech would have flowed anyway. A former denel worker walked into Pakistani embassy in London and sold the formula to them in early to mid 2000s and moved to NZ.
@@MarxAlex Well Mr. Bull ended up designing long range guns for Saddam Hussein, which might been interresting and well paid work but done for increasingly "evil" side which brought him quite some personal dangers...
Go to Legacy Conversations and learn what South African Special Forces did and what the G5 and G6 achieved.
Anyone who played Tom Clancy's EndWar would see this as the Russian SGB artillery vehicle.
Wow 🤩 it’s a Powerhouse
It Is a machine with the right crew, not today's SADF soldiers.
The new south africas army is s a n d f no comparison to the good old South Africas S A D F .
the problem in the bush war was that the russian tanks had more reverse gears than the Olifante.... :P
Reminding me of our late 32 Battalion. Forca
I could see this parked in the cargo bay of the sulaco
How do I get out of this chickenshit outfit?
poppin bottles in the club like a g6
when a sports car and a tank have a baby
SA never had the WW 2 US 155 mm duns and the G 3 were the 64 Sexton 25 lbrs SPAA guns . The first guns after the 5,5 inch (G 2 ) guns were the Israeli Soltam 155 mm guns (an interim measure until the G 5 guns arrived
I was on a G5 and I prefer the G5
South Africa in the 80s wasn't about the weapons. It was about the men using them.
Just realized it's a big boi.
More like pulp paperback, 'Weapons Gumshoe' than detective😂😂😂.
The picture of the US M1 (later designated M114 and serving with the US into the 90s) 155mm field gun doesn't match. You showed an M101 or M102 105mm Light Gun (now replaced by the M119 105mm Light Gun) being used in the video. The dead giveaway (other than the gun's small size) is that the crew is assembling CASED ammo. The MUCH LARGER M114 155mm uses separately loading shell and powder charge...
My credentials? A US 13Bravo [88 to 96] who worked on the M109 SP 155mm (6"), M110 SP 203mm (8"), the M198 155mm (6") towed gun, AND the M114 155mm (6") towed gun.
