It's been almost five years since Adam made his bear costume to walk through Comic-Con, and the suit is in dire need of repair, refit, and refurbishment. It's an opportunity for Adam to completely rebuild the one part that's never quite satisfied his original design--the bear's head. So it's time to get the bear suit out of storage and make a whole new headpiece for it, turning Adam's original sketch into a full-formed and fur-covered animatronic head!

just me who wants to hug it?
Hi Adam, im trying to think of a costume I want to make?
loo yj lull 8l
@@korymanuel4037 what does that mean, or is that a different language?
@@rioncitylife1917 LOL you wouldn't understand
this has such a "Bear in the Big Blue House" feel hahaha
Omg im glad im not the only one who saw it!
Yes!! I was thinking that the whole time... all it needs is some controllable eyebrows!
I’m not sure what that is, but “Gus” is definitely cute!
I came down here to see if anyone else thought so lol
thats what i thought he was making when i saw the thumbnail
Pro tip: use electric clippers to trim the fur at the seam allowances. This will make the seams less bulky and make them lay more flat.
I feel like his first drawing, which he deemed "too big", was probably about right. Bears have big heads.
Well, it turned out pretty nice. A little "teddy bear", but like Adam said, with a lot of character
I agree with your initial statement. When I heard Adam the first layout was too big, I thought it was just right, especially for the type of “grizzly bear “ appearance he seems to be going for. He ended up with a really nice Disney style bear, but I don’t think that is what he wanted.
@@twolf1693 Now, if he was in full Roosevelt costume undrneath, that would be special!!
I think he got intimidated by all that bear head sitting on his neck.
You ever been face to face with a Kodiak grizzly? I have. A friendly one. About 1/3 of its entire body size is its head. The first head looked more like a polar pear ....
As someone who makes fursuits on the regular, to get that clean and realistic look, you gotta preshave your fur before sewing it, then shave after as well to clean up.
Also, adding expoxy sculpt for eyelids and lips really makes stuff look less teddy bear and more alive.
When watching adam drawing the new bear head, I thought Adam really needs a a overhead projector to put his drawing on so it makes it easier to draw and scale. Still love that workshop and I help be inspired to build myself. Thank you Adam Savage you fellow Mad Man.
Please tell me I'm not the only one thinking in Bear and the big blue house
Yep, came here to say this
No. I was thinking the same thing. I loved watching that show with my kids when they were little.
Actually, I'm watching this so I can get a good an idea how to pull off a costume build for Bear from Disney's Bear in the big blue house.
It's kind of a dream to be him for a convention... and Smokey the bear.
You are most definitely not the only one lol
Yess!!
I feel like a lot of the menacing-ness comes from the color. Maybe if you airbrushed some darker streaks into the fur around the eyes and jaw it would feel a bit more threatening
Yeah I agree
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe raise the shoulders an inch or two to raise the stature if that's possible. I feel as though the neck is a bit long.
I agree.
And more yellow and brown on teeth
Sick fursuit, Adam!
:D nice
1:15 "I love this sui... I love this costume."
I wonder what his fursona name is.
Lol, I was just wondering what other suits he has that counts as "furry". He's got the Totorro ones, Chewbacca, and the velociraptor costume might(?) Count as scalie?
@@Kupo_Joe Back on when Mythbusters was airing, I remember seeing a furry meme of people drawing jamie and him as a walrus and an otter.
Some light dusting of dark paint around the eyes and mouth will help make it menacing 🙂
Every time I watch Adam working on things, I always have the same thought "This man is a treasure" Thank you Adam for sharing your projects with us. It's always a joy to watch you work.
Like all things in nature, the cute factor comes from the eyes being big and far apart. If the eyes were smaller and closer together, it would be more menacing
And dark. Small, dark, forward facing eyes would make the bear...scary.
This why sharks are cute.
@@salaltschul3604 You mean like the bear in the Big Blue House? damn scary.
@@stephen300o6 Terrifying!
And he needs to make a "paste" from actual gum (the tree) chewing gum and a metric shitton of graphite powder, and "blend" that paste into the snout, where the bear (like a lot of animals, but especially predators) has a lot of "worn" leather. Personally, i would've died (somehow??) the fake fur's base into a black/dark color.
For future headwear projects, instead of a “Hard Hat”, look into Bump Caps. They are more form fitting and smaller around than the typical hard hat. They are more like an industrial baseball cap
Without the ratchet closure (or Adam's "clicky-click"😄) to tighten them to the head bump caps tend to have a looser fit. Having said that a combination of the plastic shell from a bump cap + the head harness with ratchet (removed from a safety helmet) could give a less bulky starting point. It's given me food for thought so thank you. I have a head harness similar to the one in the helmet Adam shows, but it alone lacks the rigidity to use in a build I'm planning.
Holy shit this is perfect for something im making, thank you!
Another option is to just buy the head gear for a welding helmet, they make amazing ergonomic head gear that attaches at as little as two spots. And it has the ratcheting mechanism he likes so much.
I'm sure I speak for a lot of us who are way overdue and updating our bear costumes.
Oh, absolutely. Mine really needs a lot of work.
😂
This is maybe the third time I've heard this jam on one of these episodes. It's great
Just me who thinks the original was a more realistic bear? Still a great build tho
@@kruleworld but then it's not really his.
@@kruleworld then what's the point in making these?
Can't wait to see you at Anthrocon!
You spend a lot of weathering show props and such, you need to "dirty" up this guy a bit. Make him look like he's just out of the woods
These one day multiple day builds are just the best. Especially when your sick and looking for something funny, entertaining, and interesting to watch just top notch Adam thank you for all the hard work.
Is it just me or was it kinda magic how Adam was moving the bear's mouth? I love the cheekiness of the new bear mask actually mouthing out the words "...how am I gonna control the mouth of this thing... " :D
honestly I feel like adam would love a furry convention. Lots of artwork, crafting, all the costumes are handmade, some have electronics like sound reactive lighting and smoke effects, there's always a dance contest and panels on animals in popular culture or special effects or anything creative and potentially creature related. plus, no one would ever suspect who's in the suit.
I see you are taking your right to bear arms literally.
Lol!!
Hahahahaha
As soon as I heard "take apart car engines and throw all the bolts into a bucket", I INSTANTLY thought of James May. Loved that shout out. The Reassembler and One Day Builds deserve to be together.
The bear looks like it belongs at Disney World as part of the Country Bear Jamboree!
Lol I just wrote this and then pulled back on it. 😁
Yeah, the bear is cute as hell. I think a couple of things contribute to the cuteness: #1 has to be the shape of the head and size or visible size of the eyes. The first iteration had a fiercer gaze. #2 has to be the color of fur Adam chose. It's blonde and light. Grizzlies are dark brown and black bears are black. Polar bears are white and look adorable but in reality will rip your face off. #3, the head is very round. It doesn't look like it has a skull so much as it looks like a stuffed animal. #4 the jaw, though effective, adds to the cartoony nature because it makes the bottom of the head even rounder. Maybe if Adam made some jowls hang down by sewing some fur together?
I always thought the old bear face looked a bit thin, he needed some CHEEKS
I think this is where he ended up on the new one, too. The muzzle looks like it's too long, but I think you're right, I think it's just too narrow. So it's only "too long" in proportion. If it was wider, all the way back under the eyes, I think it would be closer.
I hope someone has told James May that Adam Savage loves him and his show and is arranging for them to get together and take things apart/put them back together soon...
Best. Playdate. Ever
I waited the whole video to hear Adam sing the „Necessities“ song from the Disney Jungle Book movie. This bear is as cute as Balou.
I think its the subtle grin you put in it. He's always "smiling" even when his mouth is closed.
Maybe to make him more menacing is to darken the nose and around the eyes.also a brow mechanism like the jaw from cute to angry 🤷🏼♂️
I feel like large eyes also contribute a lot to the cuteness
I agree some darkness around the eyes and nose would help.
Lips too
As someone whose making a fake bear headdress for a dnd character I created, you have no idea how much this video helps me
All we need now is a video of Adam singing “The Bear Necessities” while dancing in this costume.
His excitement is the child inside sudden voice changes playing with his creation your the grown up child we all hope to be Adam Savage
Adam - when you held up the pic of the real bear it showed what you need to do to make him a little more menacing. Airbrush some black and brown around the eyes, make them a bit "angry" in the way you shade the brows and bags.
As a fursuit maker/builder and cosplayer this was a fun video to watch! I would love to pass on any of my knowledge of my fursuit/costume building techniques or tips if ya ever need. You are an inspiration to so many builders out there, I eagerly await each and every video
oh god i should have known this video would bring out the fuckin furries xD
On today’s episode of tested. Adam builds a god damn fursuit

If only there was a device that could beam the image from his laptop to the paper/card in some form of projection...
Some form of -- oh, I don't know -- a "projector," perhaps...?
Or head me out a device that could print out the shape you want in the size you want
@@ezequielmora-mendez4008 someone get Adam an A1 printer please 🤣😰😜
The fact that this pair is fabulously cute makes this build even better! Lol
Adam I love how much you enjoy creating. Seeing you dance at the end filled me with joy! 🤣 Please just keep being you
Wait, when did I subscribe to Build-a-Bear Workshop's channel? 😅
Lol
Reminds me of the bear from Bear in the Big Blue House 😍 used to love that show as a baby so this is nostalgic. Also he could make the fur more realistic by dying the fur a darker colour. You can do that with a spray gun and watered down fabric dye.
My therepist: Adam Savage with bear eyes doesnt exist, he cant hurt you
Adam Savage with bear eyes: 33:54
Looks like my Goldendoodle, which I love. It needs the black lips to be more bear like.
The reason bears always have a frown is it's been 14 years since they've been to the Superbowl.
To me, Adam's "bear" head looks more like a harbor seal's head (without fur attached). Depending on species, a bear's head is larger, more blocky, and less rounded. But it's my opinion. That, plus $5.00, might get you a cup of coffee.
That is a SAVAGE Creation ! Well done Adam!
When the suit is past its best, you could make a bear skin rug 🤣👍👍
Adam,
You are holding the clippers upside down the large metal blade of the clippers goes towards the scalp unless you are lining. When you use a guide you want to go against the grain to force the comb of the guide to lift the hair to give you an even length cut.
I wish to modify my former statement that guys are such kids. ADAM is such a kid and it is fricken ADORABLE LOL.
The music in this one is really good. Nice choices this time guys.
Needs a hat: "Only YOU can Prevent Forest Fires!"
I can tell that he’s as much explaining to the audience how the face ended up the way it did as much as he’s trying to convince himself he’s ok with it. I don’t think he’s happy with the final result… the evidence being that the final chunk of the build is really glossed over and there’s not many close ups at the end to show what it really looks like.
The main thing to me is the neck looks too long and slender. Maybe recess the hard hat further up inside?
Watching this after the spacesuit build. Will say again, bear in spacesuit would be amazing.
Seeing how slowly and stop-start you sew really boosts my confidence in my own sewing ability :D
This makes me want to see an armoured bear build, something like the bears on His Dark Materials
looks really good. way more like a bear should. the jaw is a bit big giving it an over bite feel so that could need slight modification
When he was talking about the puppeteer tip, I heard, "I will fur-ever be grateful..."
So great! Super realistic animals costumes are one of my favorite builds because of how people react to them. I've always wanted to build a bear to busk in after seeing yours. This new bear head is SO great.
The old bear head was more realistic and menacing while this one looks like a bundle of joy made by Disney😹🙏🏽
An exacto knife works pretty nicely but I found when cutting fake fur, it's so much easier to use a loop rotary cutter. Using one sped up the cutting time by holding the fur in my hand and cutting against the edge of the fur and then into the cut line.
Your menacing bear is fricking adorable!
Adam takes build-a-bear VERY seriously
Thank you so much for showing your mockup design process!
Dancin the day away... Bear in the big blue house comes to mind 😁
I’m loving the ‘testing the bear head’ sound effects “roo roooo roooo ooooo” lol
“What comes out of the bench comes out of the bench”. Adam Savage. I think this is definitely quotable.
Thanks this was a nice end to my day.
I think the answer is to have 2 heads for the costume. This would be head 1, happy-go-lucky party bear.
Head 2, serious bear, would be wider and neck would be close to width of the shoulders. Keep the same eye spacing and double the snout width. Bears have huge width to their snouts. Also, adding some black rubber or foam tubing for 'lips' wold help to define the jaw shape into a more menacing version. Watch a growling bear that's standing on it's hind legs and you can see the lips flapping all over as the teeth flash.
Ohh those little moments... "I thought I was the only one that did that" kind of moment... the grid transfer system between scales! OMG Adam, thanks for enlightening an old soul in a young man's body to the fact that this is in fact a system used by many and is time tested... heh... And I thought I was the only one, omg.
Didn't expect to see Adam Savage's Bear behind on my phone today 😮
Best new syndrome yet-- and most real among makers: Reassembly Anxiety.
Not gonna lie - "when you said there are many different ways to do this" I was just waiting for the "But this is how Adam/Odin makes"
I love seeing the master at work! So cool to see the thought process behind his creative process!
Go as a bear this time - the next time just add long ears, then dye the whole costume blue and, Voilà! Blue’s Clues! (Ruff!!) ❤ Great job!
I have been binge watching your videos. I'm coming to a time and a place where i can play again. You have inspired me to start seriously designing and building a costume i drew up around 25-30 years ago. Your tips and tricks are invaluable as i see them. Thank you. I love your videos. Please never stop
I believe that reassembly anxiety is a necessary part of being a good reassembler.
I think it's lookin' pretty great! Just think it needs more overbite.
"Arint you happy i never made any bear puns" yes adam that would be unBEARable 😅
I'm at the point where you start using the foam core to make the 3D shape of the Bear's Head and.... "Yep, He's a model maker alright." was a thought that came up with a giggle at how this comes to be so far. It's such a wonderful thing. I actually see that you would have been an AMAZING Imagineer if in some universe somewhere you'd worked for Disney Parks instead of Lucas Films.
Adam. Love your work. watch some fursuit makers. there are some awesome ones out there that can give you some tips and tricks to make your costumes even better.
Any fursuit channels you recommend to watch? I'm so interested in making fursuits myself and can use all the tips I can get ^-^
I repair guns. When I just started , some 25 + years ago, I had to look at guide books until I developed enough experience. Now I can visualize where things go as a floating 3D map in my mind. I would still be back to a beginner status in any other field that does not have enough cross over techniques shared.
Thumbs up for those crazy dance moves at the end! =D
Great construction. Now just needs a red shirt and a pot of hunny. Lol. I just see Winnie the poo if he was a grizzly...
It is so much fun to see you having fun, Adam!
I think the main thing making the head look more like a dog and less like a bear is the snout. Bears have very rectangular and flat snouts. With minor tweaking in the jowl area, I think you'd get a more bear-y costume!
Got me thinking about some 60's cartoon i saw when i was a kid.
A bear goes to hibernate over the winter and when he wakes up they have built a factory over his hole-in-the-ground. He then spent most of the episode trying to convince people he really is a bear but always got the same response which has been stuck in my head for the last 25 or so years; "YOU ARE NOT A BEAR! YOU ARE A SILLY MAN WHO WEARS A FUR COAT AND NEEDS A SHAVE!" (Pretty much sums up Adam)
Our poor bear then starts working at the factory and takes up smoking.
Adam! You need to get yourself a cheap projector. I love using to blow up drawings to the size I want. Also make a oversized red t-shirt and go as grown up Pooh as well!
“Go for the clicky-click” I don’t know why but Adam saying that was just so funny
From what I've learn in drawing, but this should apply for modeling and building: your bear is too round, therefore cute and not threatening / menacing. For strength and menacing look you should have a more squarish / triangular shapes. It's not an easy thing to do.
But overall, I think you nailed it.
Adorable like a teddy bear face
Dance, dance, Bear Revolution!
Old bear head, slick and thin. New bear head, Gus, a little plumper and a scruffier hairstyle = The Lockdown bear in all of us.
An overhead projector helps a lot in size proportions, and sometimes you can buy them next to nothing, but some people consider them a waste of space
And I just commented the other day how much I enjoyed Adam’s comic con walks. I’m so happy I cannot bear it. ...Happy to take that pun shame.
such a happy and joyful time well spent sir :-)
Nice FURSUIT you got there!
Adding in the eyebrows and black detailing around the mouth and you'll end up in scary!
Darkening the eyes with airbrush will using a darker brown will help with making it look more the way you want - the vicious look.
To make him scarier, try pointing the eyes more downward and outward. Also, he need a stronger brow and sagittal crest.
Man... the bear builds maybe my favorite ODB’s
