  • For the first time, we document the build of Adam's spacesuits in its entirety! Inspired by a next-generation xEMU design, Adam and his collaborators spent months building two spacesuit costumes worn in our short film "The Beacon"--celebrating the relaunch of the gaming network G4. To kick off this multi-part series, we jump back to the beginning of the summer as Adam begins the project in earnest, starting with the literal hard parts of the suit's frame and inner shell.

30:45 seeing adam woth a bloodied knuckle makes me realize that it is basically all part of the process of making something by hand. Working with your own hands means you will undoubtedly have the marks to show for it. It was the same for me working as a carpenter for 10+ years with my father, you manage to scratch, hit or cut yourself on anything and everything, but no matter how many times it happened, every knick and dent was a memory and a proof that you had done something by yourself and that every mark is something to be proud of, no matter the circumstances around the "accident".
I love working with my hands, and seeing adam doing this build makes me wanna do a similar build just because I can 😅

Adam, suggestion when you're doing fiberglass work. instead of trying to brush on the resin, before it kicks... just dunk the entire piece of cloth, in the resin, before you lay it up. Then you're just using the brush to smooth it out. It goes a LOT quicker that way, and you don't have to worry about dry patches. Just, wear gloves! ...since you're handling saturated cloth. Hopefully this helps with your next fiberglass project. Keep up the great content, I always look forward to your next project!

Funny thing was that as I was watching, I kept flashing back to 1958 and me at age 12 devouring Heinlein’s “Have Spacesuit, Will Travel.” Before getting to the UFOs and aliens, the first quarter of the book covers all of the challenges of building/refurbishing what Adam calls an anthropomorphic spaceship. The fun thing about fiberglass resin and spandex is that you can make such complex shapes that you would swear you vacuuformed something. Once you get the shape you want, just slap some glass on top with more resin and you now have a structural form. It's a favorite in the custom sound system community as well as custom car panels.

  • @chriscmoor
    @chriscmoor 2 года назад

A little graphite lock lubricant in those bearings will smooth their operation and reduce the noise. Might be too late for the machined shoulder bearings, but you can still get to the set screw in the waist bearing, as well as, lubing the machined bearings for the second suit before the plug is super glued in place.

  • @Bakamoichigei

Stretching the spandex over the plywood form, stiffening it with epoxy, and then laying up some fiberglass on it is such a brilliant construction method. I am happy to be learning the issues with using fiberglass for this type of project. I like the idea of using spandex to get the curves to the form. Maybe putting a couple of layers of paper/cloth maché over the spandex to create a puck, then vacuforming over that to make the shell would work. I'll have to give it a try on one of my projects, one of these days.

1:02:26 : I think the geometry on your "briefs" is just fine for a suit you're going to stand up and walk in. Had it been to wear in a zero-G environment, then yes, a little tilt at the pelvis level would have made it more comfy as this part of the body would naturally rotate a little.

Btw, if you happen to build the Sylveon for battle ready, make sure she/he’s made with extremely fire retardant fabric, and the feelers are covered in similar, if you want them all conectivity like, copper, silver or gold should be inlayed into the fabric and woven in to the keys (like spinal nerves.)

39:13 all you have to do to understand that is think in pressure. They're using the pressure of the suit, to seal up the bearing (on its designed mating surfaces, rubber, Teflon whatever it is they're using this time around) . You have to discard the notion of bearing, and think solely at the pressure acting against two rings. The bearing is a feature, it's the reverse mounting that's actually the focus, it's quite possible they started with that, then worked the rotation into it. There's a couple of drawings of the old NASA bearings in section which show the sealing surfaces in detail (i'm sure you've come across them), remove the balls, and races, and they're easy to get then.
At least that's how i did it when i made an one-of for an articulated sprayer system. Mine uses water pressure. If there's not enough water pressure, it will leak like a sieve. I'm sure the NASA bearing also leaks an amount of air if pressure isn't sustained (tho it's also possible they have a countermeasure for that, seeing as it's a more vital system).

I keep seeing the bear head pattern in the background and imagining the bear costume head coming out of the spacesuit. I really feel like Space Bear would be a great thing.

I am absolutely gobsmacked by this build! Incredible work Adam and Team! The forms and construction are gorgeous, there really is incredible beauty in the simplicity of the circular forms with spandex skin. Can't wait to see more!

A thought about the Infil/Exfil waist flange, perhaps it could be further utilized for a modular waist attachment system for things like tool belts or control systems? Since it's already sort of weight bearing, it seems like a perfect place to hang things from.

1:05:04 I am not surprised in the least that Adam quotes that specific scene in Aliens, but it's nice to know we share that quality.

I would love to see a “Wally Wood “ type space suit. Wally Wood was so inspirational to those early space sci-fi movies. Take a look at old EC COMICS featuring his work.

Funny, I just went to the comments to make a similar suggestion. I don't know how famous Tintin is is the USA, but in Europe, the red and white rocket from Tintin's voyage to the Moon is very recognizable - as is probably the orange space suit design from the two comic albums that make up the whole story.
As I understand Hergé's drawings, the spacesuit is almost completely made of hard components, and very similar to the Artemis suit, except I think the waist ring is a bit wider and also serves as the entry point. Which I believe is actually quite practical.
I'd love to see Adam try to construct it in the real world.

i’m watching this while working on my own suit, not a space suit, but a suit that can survive antarctica to a volcano, bullet resistant and has cooling and heating, hearing adam talk about how he’s been thinking about it for years made me tear up a bit it reminded me of my own process towards the suit

I can't help but think that, like a backpacking backpack, the weight should be carried on the hips, and minimally on the shoulders. With the Briefs assembly, there must be a way to support some of the lower body structure on a hip belt. Though I get with the limits of the rear door, it would be hard to get at a hip belt system down in there to tighten it up.

One way to decrease the rattle in those bearings would be to pack them with grease but that could get messy very quickly since they are not sealed.
