  • An interesting British Rail training film for drivers of the new Advanced Passenger Trains (APTs) of the early 1970s. This gives a Cab Eye view of the transponder warning system introduced for these trains to control speeds. I Struggle to get where the stations are...if you know please say so in comments below.

Thanks for posting, a really fascinating insight into what has become the norm. It's just a shame we weren't there 30 years ago.

The station at 3:33 is Coventry and the station at 8:00 is Birmingham International, so the other stations should be along the WCML from Rugby to Birmingham.

I am thinking why they didn't took it further, with possible connections with the signals to the transponders where possible, and passive transponders where it's not possible to make such connection. So diverging routes, and yellow and red signals... It could be a cheaper, but just as good a solution as the later TWPS.

TPWS was to be a temporary expidient after the report into train trotection systems following several accidents until ATP was fitted to all lines, however privatisation meant the cost of ATP was deemed too expensive and so we are stuck with TPWS which in itelf is neither failsafe reliable or a complete signal engineering based solution, which both the trial ATP systems now beimg removed from the chiltern and GW lines are

Very sad, after so much development the APT was abandoned, apparently it was made from solid oak.

APT Advanced Passenger Train, designed by BR but the project was pulled by government before introduction to passenger service, the itallian railway took on the idea and sold it back to britain as the class 390 pendolino the equivalent to CAPT balises depicted in the film is TASS Tilt Authorisation Speed Supervision

Not the apt - it’s a class 312 multiple unit , also the video would be post 1976 as that was when Birmingham international station opened
