With great respect for Ms. Hazleton, Islam teaches that Adam and Eve were the first Muslims, as Islam teaches that God has sent dozens, hundreds of profits and messengers throughout time and to all corners of the Earth including Abraham, who is mentioned more than any other person in the Quran, Jesus, Mary, St. John the Baptist, etc. etc. To be fair, Ms. Hazleton actually refers to this in her TED talk which is so interesting and entertaining--definitely recommend you see it if you haven't.
I really love Lesley Hazleton and respect her ideas and she is a great writer no doubt but just a small correlation Mohammed is not the first Muslim he just has revived Islam because you have to know that all messengers were muslims and muslim means a person who submittes his will to God (Allah) so the idea that all Messengers from Adam to Jesus and Mohammed were just reviving the religion to humanity and teaching them how to be religious and religion means the way of life which means they were teaching them how to live their life in a manner to make their world a better place to live and to end up with them in Heaven.

I thank lady Hazleton for writing the book, but the title is not correct. A Muslim means a one who has surrendered his / her will to the will of the Creator. In this sense Prophet Adam (pbuh) is / was the First Muslim. In the same sense all the prophets that followed later to guide the mankind to the worship of ONE GOD were Muslims.

No, there are not (only the quran that has been written down some years later under Utman and a contract between the Muslims and the other inhabitants of Medina). If you are interested you can read the first biography of him (Sira) written by Ibn Iishaq, still existing in a transcription by Ibm Isham. These sources are the earliest books about Mohammed (though they are mainly based on earlier oral Hadith traditions). It is a bit eye-opening to read this book in a direct translation and not one of the softened biographies published by western islamophil authors because it shows the quite aggressive behavior of Mohamed and his companions (and how proud early Muslim have been about all these battles against the "unbelievers"). The story told by most Muslims today saying that Muslims have been the victims of the aggression of the "Polytheists" is according to this early biography in big parts wrong. It was Mohammed who started the war against Mecca by attacking the caravans of Mecca. Only in modern times these aggression has become a bit inconvenient - so many Muslims try to ignore or deny it.

You merely have to talk to a native Arabic speaking ex-muslim to see that Lesley is totally mislead regarding the peacefullness of Mohammed and Islam. You very clearly find orders to fight against non-believers, Christiand and Jews and these commands are by far not as harmless as Lesley tries to make them look like. And you find that not only in Sura 9. The quran contains many more aggressive verses and when you really understand it, you also understand the mentality behind it. Sometimes a small arabic ambigious phrase can change the whole meaning of a verse. Such ambigious phrases are regularly translated to a more "harmless" meaning of the quran. Talking to somebody who understands the Arabic language and is willing to tell you the truth gives a different and more honest picture. Sorry, Lesley but you should talk to some critical minds that can really read and understand the Arabic quran.

It's wrong ... The first Muslim is Ibrahim which mentioned in the Holly Quran, So the title is wrong and not the fact because The Holy Quran says Islam is started from the prophet Ibraheem peace upon him .

With all respect and apreciation that u r focusing on his life but when one of his companions asked him when did you know that you we r a prophet he said I was a prophet when Adam was in between the soul and the body..u can find this hadeeth in one of the Sunni hadeeth books.knowing this mans life is not by reading cheep and all over available hadeeth and historian books because they were written about 200 years after his death just like what happened to Jesus..someone comes and write their life history for us and we just believe..by the way the thing about him being touched by jin or wanting to throw himself off of cliff was totally defeated in the holy Quran..also his name wasn't Mohamed at his early stages in his life and you can find that in the Quran too,just a couple of hints and my God pave your path in searching for Mohamed with love but trust me when you r trying to find him in the Quran and the few true books and steer away from what the mass think of him you would fell more deeply in him thank you

So there are some writings about Mohammed from his lifetime?
No, there are not (only the quran that has been written down some years later under Utman and a contract between the Muslims and the other inhabitants of Medina).
If you are interested you can read the first biography of him (Sira) written by Ibn Iishaq, still existing in a transcription by Ibm Isham. These sources are the earliest books about Mohammed (though they are mainly based on earlier oral Hadith traditions).
It is a bit eye-opening to read this book in a direct translation and not one of the softened biographies published by western islamophil authors because it shows the quite aggressive behavior of Mohamed and his companions (and how proud early Muslim have been about all these battles against the "unbelievers").
The story told by most Muslims today saying that Muslims have been the victims of the aggression of the "Polytheists" is according to this early biography in big parts wrong. It was Mohammed who started the war against Mecca by attacking the caravans of Mecca.
Only in modern times these aggression has become a bit inconvenient - so many Muslims try to ignore or deny it.

You merely have to talk to a native Arabic speaking ex-muslim to see that Lesley is totally mislead regarding the peacefullness of Mohammed and Islam. You very clearly find orders to fight against non-believers, Christiand and Jews and these commands are by far not as harmless as Lesley tries to make them look like. And you find that not only in Sura 9. The quran contains many more aggressive verses and when you really understand it, you also understand the mentality behind it.
Sometimes a small arabic ambigious phrase can change the whole meaning of a verse. Such ambigious phrases are regularly translated to a more "harmless" meaning of the quran. Talking to somebody who understands the Arabic language and is willing to tell you the truth gives a different and more honest picture.
Sorry, Lesley but you should talk to some critical minds that can really read and understand the Arabic quran.
