Watching this again... Amazing one man army... A voice, a guitar and ton's of energy fired by ideology... Where do we find that now??? Reclaim our lame society!!!
@Larry Larry I've really got a concern about Ozone, and I'm a bit spooked about the Twilight zone, and the stuff you are so mesmerized about sounds really scary... Better to go to some real concerts when the pandemic takes a nap! Cheers
I had no idea this existed. Mid August 1986. East German tour of Berlin (x3), Halle, Dresden, Magdeburg and Leipzig with Newtown Neurotics and Attila The Stockbroker. Wish someone posted the other two acts' performance as well. And for all the hateful comments below, haters will be haters. They can spit poison as much as they want, but they won't take away love for this amazing artist. Billy Bragg forever!
Adam Biscuits, The Redskins were there too. They can be heared on the EP or seen here (it isn't the same gig but I think it must be the same tour): m.ruclips.net/video/qgpZV-Y-0io/видео.html
@@berlinwhite You might be right, I'm trying to think back over 30 years and might have gotten one EP mixed up with another. I wish I knew where all that old vinyl was.
@@brand_holt Their album was called "Neither Washington nor Moscow". No way would they have been allowed to play that in the G.D.R. ;) I happen to have been Jörg "George" Wolter´s (Billy´s, Attilas and the Neurotic´s guide/interpreter) assistant/understudy at some of those gigs.
@@berlinwhite wow, well the rain doesn't seem to be dampening the mood! (I think it just seems quiet because of how it was recorded, which is also why the audio is so good).
What a true gem! Remembering Billy Bragg saying you can't punish the small man on the street just for living in a country with false politics, he has the right to hear good music like any other person in the world. Not many thought this way: Big Country, Cool and the gang..
What does it matter where he lives, unless you're telling me his a tax exile. Aren't Socialists allowed to own nice things? Which I think is what you're implying. He works hard for whatever he has in life, and much of that work is charitable fund raising for causes he believes in.
Billy Bragg is a genius. He's got softer as he's got older but is still the leader in Socialist musical comment. (only problem is he advocated Scottish Independence)
Is there any footage of his show at Palast der Republik at Festival des Politischen Liedes in 1989? One of the most impressive shows I've ever seen in my life...!
Played there 3 times iirc. Festival des Politischen Liedes in 1986 and 1989, Liedersommer der FDJ (plus tour through the GDR with the Newton Neurotics and Attila the Stockbroker) in 1986. Despite being a socialist he was rather critical of the SED dictatorship and the lack of freedom (of speech, travel etc.) in the GDR.
one thing I'd like to know: did he know what minngling with the GDR comprised? Or did he believe in "moving the youthh" ... As much as I (ever) love his music and lyrics I hope he hasn't mingled tooo much with them... Cheers

I came from the GDR and I am happy to listen to Billy Brag. He stands for the progressive part of mankind.

late enough that it's got all his best songs
early enough that he's still got that energy and rage
He still has it!

This concert was incredible and is one of my most formative moments in music.
"Gerade aus und unkompromisiert". Gefaellt mir so immer noch.
I wonder sometimes if the crowd realized at the time or perhaps shortly after that they were witnessing one of the greatest live performances ever
We were. ;)
@@berlinwhite you were there? Amazing. Crowd seems quiet? Is that just the recording?
@@ketch_up Long time ago, so cannot really remember. What I do remember though that it was absolutely pissing down during the gig.

Hi, Billy, Nice to watch you playing and singing at last! Now what I think is Japan needs a singer like you now!
Peace, bread, work, and freedom is the best we can achieve. And wearing badges is not enough in days like these.
I've been there!
GOOSEBUMPS!!!
This is a great documentary movie! Thank U very much for your uploading it!

i don't think the rulers of the DDR were too happy with Billy Bragg for some reason
Thank you very much for uploading.
Excellent. Great job. This must stay up forever!
sometimes it makes me stop and think, sometimes it makes me turn away

@Pat Morac Me too! I would like to see a video of Billy Bragg singing it!

Songs work much better if you don't have melodic parts? OK Billy...

No this was actually in east germany

That's pure cold-war ignorance about what the DDR was like.
DDR = German Democratic Republic.
Otherwise known as "Eastern germany".
