They went on after Janis Joplin and before the Who and gave both a run for their $. Many say one of the best performances at the Festival.
As nice as the studio version is, this is Woodstock! This is a historic performance and by far my favorite version. If you know the history of the festival and how it almost didn't happen and all the drama that went into the production of the event, it's amazing that the festival of peace, love and music and nothing but peace, love and music turned out as beautifully as it did.
No studio could ever capture the passionate call for the love of good friends that Joe was singing about and doing it in front of a half a million souls. "BEAUTIFUL"
The backup singers couldn't get to Woodstock, the roads were blocked by parked cars. that is the Bass and Guitar players singing falsetto in front of 450,000 people!
The one with the lighter hair is Chris Stainton. He's Clapton's tour keyboardist these days.
They did a good job considering they had to suddenly step up. Ultimately their backing vocals were a vehicle to display Joe's great voice!
So he got help from his friends😉

This British soul/R&B singer was so unique. This song was written and recorded by The Beatles. It was a hit, but Joe's cover was a huge hit as well. The Beatles who were friends with their fellow countryman, said "I guess it's Joe's song now." This is an iconic performance in Rock History.

Joe was 25 when he did this awesome redention. When he died in 2014 at age 70, Paul McCartney said "It was just mind-blowing, totally turned the song into a soul anthem, and I was forever grateful for him for having done that." Interestingly this was recorded in 3/4 time like a waltz but the Beatles version was in 4/4 time like 90% of pop/rock..
I was blessed to see him live once when he toured with Stevie Ray Vaughan and it was awesome. Check out 'Feeling Alright' next.

The 3/4 time is very interesting. I could never pin down what made Joe's cover so different from the original (besides the passionate singing). Even most blues songs are in 4/4 time.

Have a listen to John Farnham covering "Help". A totally new rendition of the song, and not the "pop" version the Beatles were forced to release by their management. One of the absolute, for sure, Greatest live performances ever. And to happen to have done it at Woodstock. Just adds to the iconic nature of this performance. I'm 76 years old and I was one of the hippies in 1969 that attempted to go to. Woodstock for that awesome weekend. But having left my house way too late. I was one of those thousands that were stopped on the New York State Police when they shut it down so I ended up having to turn my car around and go home. So I was not there but I was glued to my TV all weekend. Watching anything that I might find which was very little and was always on the news just reporting about the concert. The closest I came was when the movie Woodstock came out was going to see it about 6 different times
Those were exceptional and different times and it's very hard. I think for people like yourself today to get to enjoy anything more than the music. Because the experience the atmosphere. The time that we lived in is hard to describe to anybody and it's impossible to feel for the younger generation. Who only have heard about the concert.
A friend who lived in New York asked me to go with him. I was in Los Angeles and had classes at UCLA. Should've skipped class.
Saw Joe Cocker live in the early 70’s. It was an outdoor concert with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, JJ Cale, BB King, Leon Russell and others. An amazing night to be sure!

I’m from Tulsa and loved to get to go to Leon Russel’s birthday bash. My wife and I worked with his son in law so we went. Leon’s a freakin legend.
This concert happened while I was in Army basic training, I never knew anything about until a year later when I was stationed on the DMZ in Korea when it was shown at the movie theater there. They showed it over and over again for an entire weekend. You could in go in and out as you pleased. Probably saw it twice because of smoke breaks for a well known and exotic herb. One of the more memorable moments of my life. I was 21 at the time.
The studio version has guitar by Jimmy Page, one of his last jobs as a session player before forming Led Zeppelin. This performance by Joe at Woodstock was quite overwhelming on a cinema / movie screen way back then!

You gotta give the band props, they weren't expecting to sing backup that day. The back up singers got caught in traffic and the band hand to improvise unexpectedly. I'd say they did it like a boss!
Joe Crocker was one of them singers that when he heard the music he heard it with every fiber of his being then let’s loose with his gritty soulful voice with so much passion and sings with all his heart and soul. We were blessed with these kinds of singers back in the day. Sad they don’t exist anymore. Loved your reactions.

This was an iconic performance and it was classic Joe Cocker... He always gave it all on stage during every performance... I remember this performance very well... During the 3 days that this concert existed, There were many people in New York state including servicemen that were trying to get home that were disgusted because the thruway was closed because of this concert... I remember that very well... I'm glad that I grew up during this era and got too experience this music ... I really miss the 1960s... Great reaction guide... You won't find too many examples of someone covering a Beatles song and making it better, but this is one of those times. Cocker had a gift for covering others' music. His version of Randy Newman's "You Can Leave Your Hat On" is another example. RIP Joe.

I've seen Joe Cocker in concert multiple times over the years but nothing compared to seeing him for the first time at Woodstock. It's hard to explain how mind blowing it was to hear what he did with this song. At that time he was a virtual unknown.

This version is from Woodstock. The recorded version was a #1 hit in the UK in 1968. His first single. Check out his fabulous "Cry Me a River" from 1970, especially the live clip from the film about his Mad Dogs and Englishman docufilm. It was a #11 hit in the USA.

Amazing voice. The first time I heard this version was when it was used for the TV Show "The Wonder Years" in the 80s.
When John Belushi was on Saturday Night Live he used to do an impersonation of Joe Cocker, quirky movements and all. There was even an episode where Joe was a guest on the show and John came out and impersonated him side-by-side with Joe. He even went so far as to flop down on the stage on his belly and roll around on his belly. It was funny but I'm not sure Joe appreciated it.
That was funny. It wasn't planned either. John was lucky enough to find a similar outfit to what Joe wore in the wardrobe department, and went on stage wearing it. Joe stated afterward that John Belushi was distracting the hell out of him. 😂

Goosebumps anyone? Several years after Woodstock, Joe Cocker was on Saturday Night Live, and the late great John Belushi did an impression of Mr. Cocker, right next to Joe. It was hysterical, and classic, based mostly on this performance right here.
Not only did they have only dynamic microphones in one of the world's worst acoustic situations, but all the sound engineers were totally stoned. All things considered, a good mix. ;)

Joe cocker, an amazing voice especially at Woodstock always look like he was about to have a seizure when he was performing. He was an amazing performer.
Cocker was fully aware of just how odd his onstage stance and gesticulations seemed. When he appeared on an early episode of Saturday Night Live, famously John Belushi took the stage with him and mimicked his weirdness. The studio audience loved it, and apparently so did Cocker.
The man is a LEGEND !!!

I saw Joe Cocker sing this in concert in late 1969, a few months after this performance. I didn’t know who he was at the time but when he came out and started singing, he blew my mind.

When discussing the sound quality here it should be taken into account that the conditions under which these 3 days of music were recorded and filmed were incredibly difficult - - and it was 55 years ago! What they captured, given all that, was miraculous.....

Woodstock was "the stage" symbolically. So many artists "got it" and brought their best to make it the memory they were experiencing and wanted to add to. Part of the magic of that weekend. Many more performances to react to with a pretty cool playlist down the road. Artists and groups you've still never heard like Joan Baez and Santana.

There are a few highlights at Woodstock that are iconic, this being one of them. Santana doing soul sacrifice, is another, and Ten Years After with Going Home, are some other big moments in a music festival that was never repeated

I went to see him in the early mid 2000s he was obviously older, but boy he could still perform There was a few other bands. He wasn’t even closing that night, but my cousin and I always say I don’t even remember. Who was there? Just remembered Joe Cocker. that’s how good he was

I was there. My parents had forbidden me from going , but in true 16 year old rebellion, I went anyway. Hell to pay when I got home, but absolutely no regrets. The next year, I attended his concert at the Fillmore East in Manhattan. I suggest you round out your Joe Cocker experience by listening to the live recording of "The Letter" from that concert. ✌️❤️🙂

After seeing/hearing Joes version of the song The Beatles "gave" it to him. Even they knew they had been bested.
Many people have naturally " rough " and even unsavoury voices, the miracle is that artists like Cocker, Satchmo and Australias Jimmy Barnes are able to control and manipulate their voice to produce beautiful or pleasant music, and over a long career.
This sing as sung by Joe Cocker was the main title theme two decades later for the memorable ABC-TV series THE WONDER YEARS.

Joe was a lifetime professional. I was blessed to go see him at a winery concert in Napier, New Zealand just a couple of years before he passed. So much energy, soul and stage presence was evident. One memory of a good time that remains in my twilight years.
I too love covers done by artists who put there own spin or interpretation and do justice to a song in their own way. Joe certainly did this in this expression of the Beatles song.
Would you like to explore a modern exponent from New Zealand who has done great covers of Prince's "Purple Rain" and Kanye West's "Ultralight Beam and others. Stan's spiritual soul and range, showcase something I feel you will enjoy.

I think you two would enjoy seeing and hearing Joe sing Randy Newman's song, "You Can Leave Your Hat On" which he recorded for the sound track in the movie "9 1/2 Weeks". You probably would enjoy his official video of this song because the sound and video quality is much better. It was recorded in 1986, so you'll see him several years after Woodstock in this one. It's a lot of fun! Laced with good music and Joe Cocker ... being Joe Cocker!

hi guys... as I was watching this out of this world performance by Joe Cocker. Woodstock showcased so many outstanding performances, from something like to this, to Melanie for example with just an acoustic guitar, no back up band, just her singing her 4 songs and encore and killing it. You look at the performers, the songs featured on the Woodstock album and simply outstanding. This was an spectacular performance and thank goodness it was all video taped and made into a documentary which won an Oscar for Best Documentary. Here's an idea... why not react to all the performances, except for Sha Na Na ... had no idea what they were doing there but that's just me. lol! I'm sure you will be totally in awe just like this one if you react to the others.

i was lucky enough to go thru those days "aware" of the music , changing culture and different value system we kids had compared to our parents , Woodstock was a totally unplanned "happening" it started out as a small venue that attracted a bigger name band that attracted more people that got more bands , it mushroomed from an original expected, estimated thousand or 2 to over 450,000 , 3/4 days of nothing but fellowship, lil' smokin and music , no fights !, will never be repeated ....joe was a recognized talent we loved to listen to and especially watch. hilarious skit john Belushi performed on a new show called Saturday Nite live with joe ....you'll wet your pants ! {if you can find it}
Another 'must see' performance from Woodstock is "Soul Sacrifice" by Santana! LIke Joe, his debut and introduction to the world! And we're all better for it! ;-)
