Last years of high school, driving around in 1967 Lemans listening to 8 track tape of Woodstock bands, cruising Telegraph rd near Detriot those were good memories!
An absolutely iconic performance. The ladies who were supposed to sing back up ( I can't remember what they were called) were delayed and couldn't make it on time so the band did the best imitation of the backing vocals they could.
I did not know that fact for over 50 years and I did wonder why that Guy was accompanying him because more than one reactor to this , as assumed it was a Woman singing so thanks for that facr. I am 67 years old in London. Do you know any other musical facts that I should know, but don't ? ....

At 15 l hitch hiked to SF ( San Francisco) and saw my first concert.. The Doors, at the Avalon Ballroom. Iol I think it was 1967. Many... many concerts followed. Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Jessie Colan Young, The Young Bloods, Bo Didley, The Doors I saw 3 times, CSNY, Donavan, Greatful Dead, Led Zeppelin the night they opened, Captain Beefheart, County Joe, The Tubes, these are the ones I remember I don't doubt there are more. Oh, yeah, The Golly Wogs... That was what Credence Clearwater Revival called themselves before hitting it big. With a little help from my friends we had a High School band... and from them came my friend Guido Colla lol aka, Johnny Colla who's Dad war Major of Suisun. Had many a dinner with Guido Sr. and his Squeeze Rosie... riding John home from school on my handle bars. (See Huey Lewis and the News) Oh, Son of Champlin. Like I said many more. Lots of great local talent that never made the grade. John has recordings of us and he says we were actually pretty damned good. I keep waiting for the CD.

I grew up in the 1970s as a teenager and in my early twenties. I saw many concerts and Joe Cocker was one of them. He was the same as you see in this video from Woodstock. There were several concerts every month in those days, Led Zepplin, The Who, Joe Cocker, Jethro Tull, Rod Stewart, and many more and I saw them all. It was a wonderful time to grow up and concerts were only five dollars. You cant park your car now for five dollars. lol I might be old now but I saw all the good bands. Peace & Love.

I grew up with Joe Cocker's music. He was an English singer known for his gritty, bluesy voice & dynamic stage performances that featured expressive body movements. He recorded a few Beatles' songs "With A Little Help From My Friends", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" & "Something". Other hits were "You Are So Beautiful", "Up Where We Belong" (a duet with Jennifer Warnes), "Delta Lady", "Feelin' Alright", "Cry Me A River", "The Letter" etc.
I was 16 years old when Woodstock happened. It was a time of the peace revolution and all songs had lyrics that were deep and very meaningful. Joe Cocker was no exception but he wsd extremely passionate and unique. I absolutely loved growing up in that Era. I am 68 now and nothing today can compare with that Era in t he music depattment.
I missed #Woodstock by just a few short years .. but there is not a singer today that could hold a candle to our generations singers lyrically and/or performance wise .. Call me a zealot. Call me bias. Call me late for dinner .. but that is the honest to God's truth imo.
Any tune Joe sang became his song. People would be saying "I'm going to sing the National Anthem by Joe Cocker" if he sang it. I'm not aware of his writing any song. He just took other people's work, snatched it from them and said "That's mine, now, b1tch." And there's nothing anyone could do about it.

This is the closest thing to a possession in real life. His body is just taken over by the power of the music and amplifies it. No surprise that The Beatles (or at least some of them) agreed that this was his song after this performance.

This is the the original Woodstock Music Festival, August 1969. It is a Beatles Tune but was interpreted differently here. He was singing to over 3000,000 young people!! They were mesmerized. This festival was released as a documentary the next year. there are countless iconic performances in that movie. you see the split screen filming technique used, sometimes 3 frames at once. There was a big rainstorm coming as that crowd sat there watching.
Drugs, sex, rock-n-roll, bell bottom jeans, tie-dye t-shirts, and the freedom to express yourself were celebrated in those days. Be your own person. Do your own thing. Go your own way. I think the spirit of those days listening to this music in art class back in the 6o's and 7o's was part of the creative flow we all connected to. We would take our records to a friend's house, turn on the black light, look at the posters on the wall and zone out to whatever music we had. Always willing and looked forward to new music. Shanell you are right to want to be a part of that period. But as for Joe Cocker. You must listen to his live version of YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL. It will bring you to tears. And then, YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR HAT ON from the film 9 1/2 weeks. Finally, the power and grit of Joe Cocker at full blast on the Ray Charles classic, UNCHAIN MY HEART. I think YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL should be you next cover. I can't wait to hear it.
I'll be 76 next month. I saw Joe Cocker 6 times over the years. MY favorite concert of all time was the Mad Dogs And Englishmen tour in the early 70's with Leon Russell and 30 of the best studio musicians of the time.

Really glad that you enjoyed that, Schnell! I had the opportunity to go to Woodstock but unfortunately, it didn't work out. But when the documentary movie came out my best friend Kathy and I skipped school one afternoon and hitchhiked (yes, hitchhiked, something we all did back in those days when it was safer to do so) to the movie theater to watch it and we were equally blown away by his and many other performances. Take a listen to his music from Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour album, especially his cover of the song The Letter. To this day at age 68, I still can't get enough of that song. Sadly Joe Cocker is gone but his music carries on so enjoy it!

I saw Joe in Vancouver at our gorgeous old Vaudeville theatre called The Orpheum. Great acoustics....one of the most memorable shows I have ever seen and I'm an old guys....saw the greats of the 70's, and 80's. Joe was special!!!!
You can come back and hang out with us back in the late 60s and into the 70's. I'm sure you'd like his "You Can Leave Your Hat On". A whole 'nother side of Joe Cocker.

‘69 Woodstock, 500,000 (1/2 Million) people there. I was 22 yrs. old, living in the S.F. Bay Area. Watching and Listening to Janis Joplin, Santana, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane (White Rabbit), Doobie Brothers, Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, Country Joe and the Fish. All these bands are from the Bay Area. Every weekend there was a “Be In” (small festival) and all these local bands would show up. It was a great time to be alive!…. SanJoséBob
Woodstock NY 1969 ! many of my friends were there !...I was a senior at Illiniois State Univ. and had to work that week. But this was an iconic performance and talked about for decades ! Woodstock was a once in a lifetime experiance.Rock and roll genre exploded with talent from every concievable source...Garage bands made good from everywhere in the country .It was so fun to be in college and alive !..No other time in music history will compare.Joe Cocker toured the US and even did a performance at the jermania club in smalltown Freeport Illinois.What a great time we all had !! met Joe back in 88 he having breakfast being interviewed by a some body, and was bored shitless I asked him to sign Mad Dogs and Englishmen he took one look at the album, he remembered those days, signed it and asked me to stay for breakfast. I declined. still regret it to this day. the album is framed and sits in my office. comments a plenty from visitors. thanks for the great shows you put on.
I love seeing the reactions to music from my youth (late '60s - early '70s). Means I can stop feeling guilty about being totally ignorant of popular music from mid '80s to the present. So many reactors claim to be unfamiliar with stuff which I thought everyone has heard.
He used to put on awesome concerts! Saw him many times live! This is Woodstock 1969! The 1970's was the absolute best decade for live concerts, for any genre of music!
Ah yes, those days! I’m 67 now, and that music still resonates with me. I DO miss the furious explosion of creative musical energy that was not only allowed, but encouraged by the music biz in those days. Artists could freely express themselves in any direction, and actually sang, and played their instruments with talent and passion. It was a fun time, at times! But…I do NOT miss the Vietnam war, political assassinations, violence against peaceful protests, civil rights angst (still happening), Watergate, etc Very nice reaction, you get the power of this performance!
Joe would hire so many people to tour with him that he was known to sleep on peoples couches when he returned home because he was broke. Finally an American woman who actually loved him, took charge and cared for him. They bought a home in Northern Arizona were they lived for the rest of their lives. In the later years he was asked to sing before the Queen who had deep respect for. She said that she loved all of those high notes he sang. Well he had not hit those notes for some time but he was not about to let the Queen down. During that concert he hit ever single high note and maybe put on his greatest show. He died in Arizona, finally loved and respected, a great singer, performer and damn decent person!
The only time Joe had a massive entourage on tour was the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. He didn’t hire them, they were forced on him by Leon Russell who used Joe’s talent and popularity at the time to further his own career.

One of my all time favorites (!!!!!)...a gritty voice and soulful. I believe that he had a disease and didn't have full control over his body, but boy could he sing. He's British and sang a lot of the Beatle songs. Glad you found him and gave him a cover so newer generations would know about him. THANKS !!
Nor from that Era but did see when John Belushi did Joe on SNL. Then Joe was on SNL and John did his "Joe Cocker" together on stage with Joe. I always wondered what Joe thought until Joe did an interview and he had nothing but nice things to say.

I saw Cocker in Vegas at the MGM. The place was packed and what a standing ovation he received!
This was live at Woodstock...they all spent three days in the rain and mud and had an absolute blast. R.I.P Joe Cocker xx

‘69 Woodstock, 500,000 (1/2 Million) people there. I was 22 yrs. old, living in the S.F. Bay Area. Watching and Listening to Janis Joplin, Santana, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane (White Rabbit), Doobie Brothers, Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, Country Joe and the Fish. All these bands are from the Bay Area. Every weekend there was a “Be In” (small festival) and all these local bands would show up. It was a great time to be alive!…. SanJoséBob
Woodstock NY 1969 ! many of my friends were there !...I was a senior at Illiniois State Univ. and had to work that week. But this was an iconic performance and talked about for decades ! Woodstock was a once in a lifetime experiance.Rock and roll genre exploded with talent from every concievable source...Garage bands made good from everywhere in the country .It was so fun to be in college and alive !..No other time in music history will compare.Joe Cocker toured the US and even did a performance

he took one look at the album, he remembered those days, signed it and asked me to stay for breakfast.
I declined. still regret it to this day.

I love seeing the reactions to music from my youth (late '60s - early '70s). Means I can stop feeling guilty about being totally ignorant of popular music from mid '80s to the present. So many reactors claim to be unfamiliar with stuff which I thought everyone has heard.
He used to put on awesome concerts! Saw him many times live! This is Woodstock 1969! The 1970's was the absolute best decade for live concerts, for any genre of music!

I saw him in the 1980s at Parkers in Seattle. I wasn't excited to go but was blown away. We got a table close to stage and he blew my mind!

I was born in 68, but I grew up in Ocean Beach, California in the 70's. It definitely was a magical time in America
Ah yes, those days! I’m 67 now, and that music still resonates with me. I DO miss the furious explosion of creative musical energy that was not only allowed, but encouraged by the music biz in those days. Artists could freely express themselves in any direction, and actually sang, and played their instruments with talent and passion. It was a fun time, at times! But…I do NOT miss the Vietnam war, political assassinations, violence against peaceful protests, civil rights angst (still happening), Watergate, etc

Joe would hire so many people to tour with him that he was known to sleep on peoples couches when he returned home because he was broke. Finally an American woman who actually loved him, took charge and cared for him. They bought a home in Northern Arizona were they lived for the rest of their lives. In the later years he was asked to sing before the Queen who had deep respect for. She said that she loved all of those high notes he sang. Well he had not hit those notes for some time but he was not about to let the Queen down. During that concert he hit ever single high note and maybe put on his greatest show. He died in Arizona, finally loved and respected, a great singer, performer and damn decent person!
The only time Joe had a massive entourage on tour was the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. He didn’t hire them, they were forced on him by Leon Russell who used Joe’s talent and popularity at the time to further his own career.

One of my all time favorites (!!!!!)...a gritty voice and soulful. I believe that he had a disease and didn't have full control over his body, but boy could he sing. He's British and sang a lot of the Beatle songs. Glad you found him and gave him a cover so newer generations would know about him. THANKS !!

Nor from that Era but did see when John Belushi did Joe on SNL. Then Joe was on SNL and John did his "Joe Cocker" together on stage with Joe. I always wondered what Joe thought until Joe did an interview and he had nothing but nice things to say.
Incredible artist…was lucky enough to see him in his later years…he was still great !!!
