There aren't many who've covered a Beatles tune and made it better. This is one of those rare cases. RIP Joe.

I agree that Joe made the song better, but in all fairness, he basically made it almost a whole new song. The real achievement is to do a song in a similar way to the original artist but made your version better. This is extremely hard to do.

My favorite performance of this one is the duet with John Belushi on SNL. Belushi was notorious for his parody of Cocker, and to see that he could take a joke and own it spoke volumes about Joe as not just a performer, but as a person.
Belushi was a pretty blues singer.

Hi guys 67 year old woman here from Sheffield where Joe was born and where all my elder brothers and sisters used to watch him perform in all the local pubs/bars before he was famous, what a legend just a great guy
When the guest guitar player (in the studio version) is Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin and that's not even the main appeal of the song, you know it's some next level stuff.
Legendary contributors: Leon Russll on guitar, Chris Stainton on keys and Bobby Keys on Sax. all legends. Stainton still on tour with Eric Clapton 50 years on.

Leon Russell on guitar, Jim Gordon and Jim keltner on drums. Carl radle on bass. This is a hell of a band. Bobby keys on sax. What you have here is half of Derek and the dominos Jim Gordon and carl Radle. Also a background vocalist is Rita Coolidge.

Sorry no…but Joe Cocker was well into snorting heroin & coke (no needles) and heavy drinking on this tour. (well documented) He got off heroin in 1973 but remained a full blown alcoholic for a long time after.
He was on a cocktail of serious drugs here. Shame, he was handed this stuff constantly, the tour was a nonstop drug trip. The fact that he didnt OD on this tour can only be due to his Welsh coal miner background. So glad he stayed around.

Joe Cockers version of The Letter is also amazing..
His live performance are stuff of legend even when into his 60’s. He sung with his whole body not just his voice. “You’re so beautiful “ and “ Delta lady” are absolute musts 🔥🔥🔥
He took a Beatles song, and turned it inside out into a blues song and made it his own!
Paul McCartney said he would be forever grateful to Joe Cocker for taking that song and turning it into a soul anthem.

My mom met him when my cousin was dying in a hospital in Atlanta. Her husband was in the music industry. He was a caring and wonderful man who was born with a birth defect that affected his arms. Sadly, his son was born with severe birth defects. Loved this man and this song!!
You just watched one of the truly great and iconic video's of the '70's. The stage is absolutely full of legends of rock and all performing with such great energy and passion, so typical of the time it was made. God rest Joe, he was a one-off..
In Sir Paul McCartney's own words John and I wrote it Joe Cocker owned it, the Woodstock version is the definitive version and better than this, but wow Joe Cocker is just amazing with this , brilliant is an understatement.
Woodstock is not better than this. Much better backing singers and instrumentation.

I would vote for the version on Mad Dog and Englishmen as the definitive version. CORRECTION! What, nobody was going to call me out? This wasn't on Mad Dogs, although that's a brilliant live album, 1970 at Fillmore East! I must be thinking of Woodstock, my personal favorite, despite backup vocals lacking a little bit.

Wonder what Woodstock would have been if the ladies could have got there to do the backing vocals. The falsettos of the string section wouldn't be there and what else would have changed

The cat in the hat playing guitar is Leon Russel - The Master of Space and Time - who did all of the arrangements for the tour. For your next Cocker outing, I'd strongly recommend Russel's song Delta Lady, written about Rita Coolidge, who was then one of the backing singers before she rose to fame herself. Sadly, Coolidge claims she never used to hang around "wet and naked in the garden" but I'd bet there are millions of my generation that have that image burnt into our imaginations.

I had the privilege of seeing Joe Cocker live in 2008 when he was 64. This song had the crowd on their feet and me in tears! The entire concert had such an amazing energy I still have vivid memories.
I saw him in the seventies and he was epic. What an amazing performance.

He's not intoxicated, guys -- That's how he ALWAYS looks when he's in the middle of a concert and swept up in the music.
One very special era in time. Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison. True originals. Not overly produced. Pretty great stuff.
I love this performance, more so than the Woodstock one. The backing vocals are woeful at Woodstock. This had a great ensemble, and looking at young Rita Coolidge is always fun.
The backing girl singers at Woodstock got stuck in the traffic, so the band had to do it themselves.

I was 15 when I bought this single in 1968. It was and still is a classic cover. Joe makes it his own!

Got to see Joe in concert back in 1990. Co-headlining tour with some guy you may have heard of; none other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. The greatest show I have ever seen!

Cry Me A River knocked me out, when I saw It on TV, at age 11 in 1971 . It still does. It's on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen album. It's rivaling With A Little Help Of My Friends on the title Best Cover Ever.

This version is so iconic to the end of the 60s. It was used as the theme to the TV show "The Wonder Years".
Everything the singer had learned from Ray Charles’s records, and his native Sheffield’s pub circuit, went into alchemising Ringo Starr’s amiable version on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band into a soul-blues classic. Backed by his road-hardened Grease Band, Cocker appeared possessed by the song, roaring it with a gravel-rough voice, his hands shaking at his side, and his body spasming.
To be fair, that way of "dancing" wasn't just with this song, it was just the way Joe "danced".
That's Joe for ya, the man was phenomenal.
His voice is unique, his shows are amazing and his persona captivating.
And yes, to me the same notion, this song is one of those rare occasions where the cover beats the original.
And of all artists out there, to out-do the original... he outdid the freakin Beatles... that's like... i dunno.. god-tier levels?

Saw Joe 5 times live. First was his Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour in 1970. Unforgettable experience, it was truly a celebration of the joy of music. I miss him.

You've tapped into a gold mine here! Cocker's Cry Me River, You Can Keep Your Hat On, Feeling Alright, The Letter are all sublime Joe Cocker hits. And then you need to check out the dude in the top hat on this video, multi-instrument aficionado and song writer Leon Russell. His opus from the Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour included A Song For You, and Delta Lady. But my favorite song is his 1971 hit Stranger In A Strange Land. I personally prefer this version to Woodstock. Woodstock's got better sound quality but the whole vibe here - with the backing singers, all the musicians and the crescendo climax makes it something special.

This is magnificent - there’s no other word for it.
Just a few bits of info on Joe... Legend has it that he downed almost an entire bottle of Irish whiskey over the course of every show but it never affected his performance. Later in life he quit drinking and became a teetotaller. He grew up in the working class county of Sheffield which is in South Yorkshire. He worked as a gravedigger and a plumber to make a living because he didn't finish school. He was obsessed with 'The Beatles" and played their albums incessantly. It was when he sang along to the songs that he first realised he could actually sing, albeit with a bluesey growl. He covered various Beatles songs such as
1. "She Came in Through the

2. "I'll Cry Instead"
3. "Something"
4. "With a Little Help from my
Friends"
5. "Let it Be"
6. "You've Got to Hide Your Love
"Away"
7. "Come Together" (My personal favourite. His version is incredible and he totally made that song his own). His performance at Woodstock singing "With a Little Help from my Friends" was unforgettable. It made him a soul/blues/R&B legend.
Joe made a cameo appearance as the character "Mr. Kite" in the movie based on the music of "The Beatles" entitled "Across the Universe". He sang the song "Come Together".
The dude in the top hat that appears in this video is his long time collaborator Leon Russell. Russell usually played keyboards but sometimes played guitar as well. He did most of the musical arrangements for the songs, giving them an entirely new sound. The two of them seemed to be able to communicate almost via osmosis on stage. It was uncanny how in sync they were with each other. A few of Joe's other songs I highly recommend you listen to are...

He did another great Beatles cover of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window", so you might want to hit that one. I'm glad you did this version - there's also a Woodstock performance that's well-regarded, but this has by far the better background vocals.

Leon Russell. So missed. Saw him last at a small supper club a few months before he died. I sat ten feet away with a great angle to see his hands on the piano and a side view of his face. I think he sang every song he ever wrote. And told stories in between each song. It was incredible: I hadn’t seen him since George Harrison’s fundraiser for Bangladesh (1971!). He died in 2016.
Quite simply, for many, Joe Cocker is simply a legend. His longevity ,emotion and passion he brings to every song and performance is unbeaten. My friends were lucky to have seen him many times 'best concert ever' they bragged.For me, he got better with age. So I suggest 'You are so beautiful' his classic ballad, 'Can't Find My Way Home' for production and more emotion and from his last album (I think) 'I come in Peace' a great rocky number.

Guys. The band...actually everyone on stage were famous front other bands. They got together for this tour. First instance the guy in the top hat and band leader was Leon Russell. They came together to play music and tour.

The great story about Maddogs and Englishman is that Joe got to America without a band. Leon Russell put together and rehearsed a group of all stars on the fly. A cast of legends.

I saw joe in the montreal forum in 1990 with stevie ray vaughn who died within two weeks there was no head liner they played for over six hours love joe God bless his soul and stevie it was amazing and don't forget you are so beautiful and countless others great show I will remember forever

Put his heart, soul, his socks and bottom of his boots into that one, real class act Joe was.
Another Woodstock alum is part of that musical experience -- the drummer with the tight Afro is Michael Shrieve, who played that iconic drum solo on Santana's "Soul Sacrifice.
I never saw this particular version, his friends are Leon Russell on guitar with "his Family" as he referred to his band mates. The best performance I think is still the Woodstock version. For a laugh you guys should check out vintage Saturday Night Live with John Belushi impersonating him. IT IS THE BEST!!!
The drummer was the youngest on the Woodstock Festival. He played with Carlos Santana. Hola desde CHIHUAHUA MEXICO.
