Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Chained Echoes, Like a Dragon and its sequel, Dragon Quest 11, FF7 Remake and Rebirth are some of the ones that I think define this new era of JRPGs.
@@Sorran87 Both performed well in terms of sales, or so it seems. The first one topped 3 millions by the time the second one came out and it might be at 4 millions now. The second one got to 1 million in a month and had a better pace than the first one by the 1 year mark. They did well in terms of sales for a new IP. It's just they deserve more recognition as the masterpieces they are.
I think the game industry is opening up to many genres, even niche games are getting lots of products and investment, which is amazing. Great time to be a gamer
Sea of Stars is incredible. I agree the story isnt the best but everything else nails it for me. The animations, world beauty, THE MUSIC GOES HARD. Its epic.

We surely are. I think that this year might be one of the greatest the genre has ever seen and there is so much to come in the future. No matter if it's a re-release/remaster, new entries of established franchises or indie games.
I think the original jRPG craze and "Golden Age" was defined by Japanese publisher/devs being more willing to bring their games to the West, and not by the variety of jRPGs there was (which plays into the widespread releases back in the day). It's true that we're now seeing more of it, but that's probably a corollary of the game industry being as massive as it is now.
I think it's more to do with the AA studios popping up everywhere. It's much easier to make a good quality game with a small studio now than it probably ever was. The difficulty is finding a publisher that won't ruin it. Those 90s JRPG players can now make games they've wanted for decades.
@@kyledabearsfan Yes, jRPG fans improving on what they deem missing or improvable in classic titles - a stark example of that being last years' "Sea of Stars" - or taking cues from the best in the genre (e.g. "Eternights"). Besides that, getting funded for such a project is now easier than it has ever been - one fairly successful example being "Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes".
Yup 2023-25 is possibly one of the best times for RPG’s. Especially for turn based combat, which is getting a notable resurgence. We are still getting Expedition 33 next year, and there is the heavily rumored Final Fantasy IX Remake.
Chained Echoes is one of my favorite games of this decade. Just like Xenogears was a genuine love letter to classic mecha anime, so too is Chianed Echoes a love letter to Xenogears.
finally my favourite style of game is making it's comeback. My gamingcareer started that way and now i'm playing the pixel remaster of to get all those youth memories back :p
You and I often have different takes, but I strongly encourage you to play Tales Through Daybreak. My game of the year so far, but haven't played Metaphor yet.
What I found interesting is that Trails Through Daybreak offers action combat as well as turn based and so does Metaphor. I feel like that blend really cuts down on the monotony of grinding, which is great.
The Suikoden series is still available cheaply if you have a PS3, on PSN. Each game from I-IV is only 6 to 10 a piece - so you can buy all four games for under 40. Plus you get the original experience in terms of graphics.
It won't officially be the golden age until the golden sun games all get remakes and I will die on this hill, even though I am thoroughly enjoying all the JRPGs. I want my Golden Sun games
I think JRPG’s are always getting better, I have very fond memories of playing Ff X, white knight chronicles, four hero’s of light, and Shadow Hearts, but only one of those four games has stood the test of time lol. Obviously there are masterpieces every now and then that are leagues above the competition and that where the biggest issue lies. In my case that was my first persona game, chained echos, and Octopath traveler 2. Other games just never reached the highs I got playing those games, but their still amazing experiences.
8-bit Adventures 2 looks fun. :) I get the NES comparison, but why do you mention Super Nintendo? The game doesn’t look like a Super Nintendo game in terms of sprites or colors and the SNES was 16-bit, not 8-bit. Were you trying to reference that it doesn’t stick to the NES palette? Is it closer to the 8-bit palette of a Sega Master System or even a Sega Game Gear?

Aye It definitely does feel that we are living a new Golden age of JRPGs Ever since arguably 2017 that sort of brought life with games like NieR: Automata, Dragon Quest XI and Persona 5 to now, with a frequent amount of quality JRPGs here and there. From strong newer releases of long running franchises, to some really interesting and cool new IPs among some revivals of older IPs through more quality remasters and remakes. Even if 2024 was very loaded to the point I don’t think anyone could keep up playing every single release haha, both with time and money 😂
Japanese games have saved my gaming these past couple of years. Western AAA games have been mostly disappointing. My current GOTY is Metaphor: ReFantazio.
I already bought and beat these: FF7 Rebirth Granblue Fantasy Relink Visions of Mana Frontier Hunter: Erza's WOF Ys X Nordics Metaphor, Unicorn Overlord, Trails Through Daybreak and Cat Quest III are next on my hit list.
RPG’s have never fell off. Those are the reason I still play games. Without those I probably wouldn’t even still be playing. Refantazio is amazing but it’s doing what Dragon Quest VI did back in the day with the classes. Dragon Quest has paved the way for Pokemon, and even Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger will always be my top favs. FFVII is amazing so was Rebirth. I wouldn’t call it a new renaissance just people doing what works in different ways with RPG’s. It’s like when you hear good music again, and you hear a musically intelligent song and not just trash. Definitely am happy with what’s coming out. Super Mario Brothership is coming and I recently got Ys X Nordic, Trials Through Daybreak. DQ3HD2DHD is coming. Very exciting!
before i watch the video let me answer the titles: I dont think weve ever been lacking golden jrpgs i just think critics an audiences are coming back to it cause open worlds and shooters got stale. series like trails, tales of, atelier, and atlus never stopped obviously Its just the mainstream giving it slightly more coverage and hype though its deserved appreciation since dragon quest first came out. popularity and the spotlight are fleeting and pointless to chase. atlus proved that just keep making inventive deep games and youll have the audience you deserve. after all the perception that turn based is slow or confusing is just cause people are babies being picky/ in truth theres no such thing as action all combat is ultimately turn based the actual distinction is how its abstracted. think about that glorious dragon age 2 quote how silly that "press button something awesome happens" sounds. as if clicking a dialog option that you earned so you could secure both the elves and werewolves in dragon age origins isnt as satisfying as the ding of a well placed widowmaker (Overwatch) shot. to me theyre also just turn based with different interaction rules. and usually rpgs have more of them jrpg or not its usually more free cause competetive games get metas because weapons will be more effective, character skills might have a broken interaction and that makes it feel unfair cause its used on real people. meanwhile if you beat Ozma (FF9 superboss) you earned that through dedication thorough exploration and an full understanding of team comps. even comparing it to single player action games like god of war- youre not really doing anything different combat wise- you have to wait for openings read your opponent and use an appropriate skill item or positioning. thats basically just what the atb in any final fantasy forces you to do. its just all those functions are button presses and not a tool bag of abilities. which on another note. this is why rpg elements in action combat systems like say boarderlands is just bloat, i think cdpr and bioware have a good grasp on this cause the elements actually does more than randomize stats, it effects whole playthroughs and ya wont just default to always shooting your problems away. thats what those mechanics should do- add meaningful depth and consideration to combat- the mechanics governing actual combat rules do not matter one bit. good is good.
If new golden era means lots of low budget jrpgs, i don´t feel like that i would like this new golden era. I remember in PS1 and PS2 lots of jrpgs pushed to the limits of their console, this time most of them cut voice acting and use very old engines. Just my opinion.
Idc about prices or money cuz i play one jrpg for around a year. Yeah. Im 70 % into FF Rebirth. Reason is i play in japanese and it was my first game in that language and i translate and try to repeat every word. My next ones will be Witcher 3, Tsushima, persona 3 and Cyberpunk. My english games in next year will be only Death Stranding and GTA, even AC Shadows I'll play in Japanese
DQ III is a good place to start if you want to get into the Dragon Quest series. It's a prequel to DQ I, and DQ I and DQ II have aged poorly. (There's almost no story, and the they're both very grindy.) Most of the series outside of DQ I and DQ II are actually pretty good.
Bro that's kind of a big spoiler to the overall point of the tale though man. I'd personally have recommended at least getting DQ1 and 2 story overview first. (I love DQ 1 and 2 but I grew up with them so I'm biased)
Yeah, game is good though. Hope that they bring back the turn based games and this isn't an entire genre shift. I'm begging for a FF9 Remaster (NOT REMAKE).
Yeah it’s a good game, sure, but it just doesn’t feel like Final Fantasy. It’s Devil May Cry in a Game of Thrones type of story, with Final Fantasy lore. It’s a shame that the flag bearer and primary innovator of the JRPG genre that everyone tried to copy is now a game series that is unrecognizable to the veteran fans.

@@kyledabearsfan It’s unfortunate that we need to look at it as “old-school.” The only reason this is the case is because Square Enix has abandoned the beloved formula that made Final Fantasy what it was. You said you’re hoping this isn’t a shift, but the shift has been happening bit by bit with each new game. For some reason, instead of leading the innovation of the genre, they’ve shifted to a hack and slash direction, which is already represented in hundreds of new games every year. It feels “old school” because the primary innovators that reinvented the genre with each new game, made it engaging and fun, and brought it to the mainstream, has chosen a more beaten path rather than continue blazing their own trail like they were doing back in the day. Today, the genre is mostly represented by throwback games. Rarely do we see any high-production AAA JRPGs nowadays, with a few exceptions like Persona and Dragon Quest.
@Armoterra agreed. I suppose I meant "a permanent shift" but 100% agree. I'm hoping they will continue to release turn based games in the future. Luckily, AA titles have us covered. A lot of solid turn based games coming out. Like Sea of Stars or Chained Echoes. There is still reason to be excited for the genre. Hopefully Square takes more.

Definitely not, but there are a few good titles coming out here and there. It's a little telling that most of the better ones coming out are just remasters/remakes of the stuff in that came out during the period you described.
Agree apart from FF7 remakes which feel a bit like a cash grab to me and I don't like the action combat - the independent stuff was new to me and looked interesting would like to see more on these not many other people cover these games

Persona 5 Metaphor FFVII sequel trilogy SMTV DQXI Nier Automata Ys Trails Like a dragon Romancing Saga 2 Remake Trials / Visions of Mana FFXIV FFXVI Xenoblade series Octopath Traveller 1&2 Unicorn Overlord Etc. This era trashes the 16 bit era of JRPGs zero difficulty and is at least as good as the PSX (my favorite console of all time) and PS2 era in terms of quality and quantity.

No. People have just lowered their standards with all the trash game releases recently. Metaphor is at best a 8/10 nothing new, pretty repetitive but still better than 80% of what we get.

It shocks me that:
1) The developers left the character sprites so pixelated in a "remaster", and
2) Nobody has made a mod to upscale them.

Yeah, game is good though. Hope that they bring back the turn based games and this isn't an entire genre shift. I'm begging for a FF9 Remaster (NOT REMAKE).
Yeah it’s a good game, sure, but it just doesn’t feel like Final Fantasy. It’s Devil May Cry in a Game of Thrones type of story, with Final Fantasy lore. It’s a shame that the flag bearer and primary innovator of the JRPG genre that everyone tried to copy is now a game series that is unrecognizable to the veteran fans.
@@Armoterra absolutely, it's a great game but not a great final fantasy of that makes sense. Better than I thought it would be but I miss the old school charm.
@@kyledabearsfan It’s unfortunate that we need to look at it as “old-school.” The only reason this is the case is because Square Enix has abandoned the beloved formula that made Final Fantasy what it was. You said you’re hoping this isn’t a shift, but the shift has been happening bit by bit with each new game. For some reason, instead of leading the innovation of the genre, they’ve shifted to a hack and slash direction, which is already represented in hundreds of new games every year.
It feels “old school” because the primary innovators that reinvented the genre with each new game, made it engaging and fun, and brought it to the mainstream, has chosen a more beaten path rather than continue blazing their own trail like they were doing back in the day.
Today, the genre is mostly represented by throwback games. Rarely do we see any high-production AAA JRPGs nowadays, with a few exceptions like Persona and Dragon Quest.
@Armoterra agreed. I suppose I meant "a permanent shift" but 100% agree. I'm hoping they will continue to release turn based games in the future. Luckily, AA titles have us covered. A lot of solid turn based games coming out. Like Sea of Stars or Chained Echoes. There is still reason to be excited for the genre. Hopefully Square takes more.
Bloomtown is another recent good jrpg.

Definitely not, but there are a few good titles coming out here and there. It's a little telling that most of the better ones coming out are just remasters/remakes of the stuff in that came out during the period you described.
Agree apart from FF7 remakes which feel a bit like a cash grab to me and I don't like the action combat - the independent stuff was new to me and looked interesting would like to see more on these not many other people cover these games

No. People have just lowered their standards with all the trash game releases recently. Metaphor is at best a 8/10 nothing new, pretty repetitive but still better than 80% of what we get.
8 isn't bad but if metaphor is an 8 persona 5 is a 4/10
