That’s kinda messed up how the coaches called harmony out…it’s hard being a bigger girl and 1st time trying sports…and if you coach never had to deal with being bigger they’ll never know how hard it is…shame on y’all….you’re not going to all of a sudden get in shape in the 1st try.. it come gradually

With so many people motivating you like that you should be moving and actually trying to go while she is just still moving at the same pace. Yes she will get in shape eventually but atleast try to put more effort mane. The coaches called her out because they know she can do better than what she's doing

      Yea I wasn’t feeling that talk either. The team did the right thing by encouraging their teammate. Regardless of her being the last one, she finished. She could have stopped all together 🤷🏽‍♀️. But her team was rooting for her and she didn’t want to disappoint. Good for her! It’s NOT motivating or encouraging to call someone lazy and tell them they aren’t trying. It’s counterproductive. Especially at this age 🙄

      Agreed. I wasn’t feeling that either. Anyone who runs 5ks to marathons know that it takes time to gradually build endurance to shave just mere seconds off of your running time. That’s not something that comes within a few practices. It’s going to take time for Harmony to get in shape. It’s a very gradual process and not something that can be achieved in a week.

    Some parts of this video were hard to watch. I don’t care what any of the coaches have to say, those girls did an awesome job cheering on their teammate. They showed leadership and letting her know how important she is to the team. Last season some of the girls started getting nasty with each other so it’s good to see the ladies love on each other.
    I get hell week and why the coaches choose to do it but after the disaster at camp I would hope this would have been moved up to later in the day. The track is hot, those bleachers are hot and there’s just no way to be safe being in the NC heat. Not trying to say you should be soft on them but things to keep in mind.
    Calling out girls that are overweight and struggling because they aren’t in shape is body shaming. The girl probably already lacks self confidence, she see’s all her fellow skinny teammates and probably wishes she looked like them and could do the course as easy as them. You have to give her credit for showing up. Calling her lazy is a low blow and really doesn’t make anyone want to try harder. Why not try to talk to her and see if any of the other girls want to help her with conditioning. I would like to see Coach T do that course.

    • @sablewoods7003
      @sablewoods7003 2 года назад +46

      Yes, I’m a big supporter of JCE however the part about “losing weight and “looking good “ in the uniform “ in addition to “laziness” was hard to watch. The young lady was not ready for the intensity of conditioning that was required. In fact, quite a few of them were not. You have to scale up to that type of rigorous conditioning. If not, as we saw, injuries will certainly occur. As a clinician, (.Mental health practitioner) we must also be careful how we speak about our bodies with young adolescent girls . 🙏🏾🙏🏾 Just some things to consider for next time !

Coach Franklin used to say nope don't run with her she needs to put up the paste and run faster she being lazy. We would run with her but he would say nope move away from her. You have to stop being lazy and stop jogging and run, he understood she was big baby he mad her run alone until she gotten better. Harmony you can do just say you can girl don't be scared. And saying that it wasnt a good job and she had just finished, let her feel confident. She didnt even need to make that comment. Just let the girl feel loved by her teammates. It'll help her more.

    It’s not called being lazy, you think it’s okay to yell at them, there is a diff between tough love and verbal abuse. No matter what they did, you still cheer them up and tell them good job. I think Harmony did a great job and I’ve been in her shoes before and it’s a hard job. When you are heavier you have a lot of weight stopping you from doing a lot. It’s hard to hold that weight when working. We get tired easier and it’s stressful.

    Very impressed with the incredible team spirit and support provided--by both team members as well as from the coaches. But what does support look like? I can share from my personal perspective what I 'viewed' as support in this video clip but understand it will be based on my perceptions--I would not know if I am correct unless I had a direct conversation with Harmony. Example... we see someone in a wheelchair, being pushed by another person; we may think that is someone supporting another--but instead, the person pushing the wheelchair may very well be thinking..."damn, I'm so sick of having to do this"--what we thought was support, isn't! Point is, appearances don't tell the whole story. We can only judge a situation and come to a conclusion based on our beliefs, our own values and our own life experiences. Agreed, the way individuals as well as the team as a whole, gave encouragement to Harmony was nice to see; but the coaches as well were giving extraordinary support. Waking these girls up. Support doesn't't have to be pretty. As someone who has been in Harmony's shoes, (now am a grown woman who has gained wisdom through many a difficult and painful experiences,) I see the purpose of what the coaches were doing and agree with some of their statements. Harmony seems to be a conflicted and troubled child; with low-self esteem, and may not be getting the support she needs in her own home environment. Perhaps not even having been taught that she is worthy of much and that she has the capacity to achieve what she puts her mind too. Experientially, her going through this hell week process, I hope will help her to see where, (though not completely her fault,) she has held herself back--did anyone notice how quickly she gives up--or how quickly she resorts to crying--that, btw, could be her 'go-to' place of surrender; inside of herself likely is a looped recording that says, "no I can't" -- if she succeeds one day in saying to that inner voice, "thanks for sharing, but I'm going to do/be something different now!"--she may be able to have a life of successes. The physical endeavors in this hell week is only part of the equation. Internal shifts within her mind and a change of attitude need to be achieved; a sense of accomplishment, no matter how small to us observers, might be a big deal to Harmony, getting support from others may be difficult for her (=receiving being difficult), OR-- perhaps she is aware that she will be viewed as 'helpless' therefore, she doesn't't have to try so hard. If she plays helpless, then the responsibility isn't all hers; plus she gets a lot of attention. Who knows, there could be a plethora of reasons for Harmony's challenges - that is why I say, I see a conflicted and troubled girl. If she quits or is removed from this opportunity - and if I were a coach, I would counsel her and meet her where she is at, to help her learn, and perhaps provide some ideas to her that will help her build her self-esteem. I wish her and all the girls best wishes. My comments are not meant to criticize nor to judge, these are my observations.
