Peter Sachon demonstrates a 6-string fretted custom-built Cobra electric cello by Wood Violins. The amazing Cobra is a beautiful, lightweight, full scale electric cello featuring our unique self supporting system, which gives you the choice of standing or sitting while you play. It is comprised of a comfortable shoulder harness which the Cobra is attached to. This gives you the freedom of movement to leap about the stage and push your pesky guitarist out of the way.
The basic sound of the Cobra is quite clean - this particular recording was done with a room mike and not direct.
@armadillo616 I have actually had the honor to play one myself. It does sound quite a bit different via YT because of the sound quality in the video. They actually sound a lot like a cello in real life. Sounds like an acoustic that just has a pick up on it. But the nice thing about Cobras is the fact that you can get so many different sounds and effects from them. :)
Cobras sure are amazing instruments of the future. Also a big improvement from my cello- that stands pretty much as tall as me, and probably weighs at least half my weight! The shape really does catch the eye, I have to admit.
Agree with velderia direct line over room mic but anyway cool demo, not sure how I feel about a cello replacement with frets, seems to take away from any chance at stirring vibrato...
For me, the beauty of violins, violas and cellos is the expressiveness that comes from vibrato. Can you actually do a real vibrato on this instrument? I have heard attempts at vibrato by guitar players and it is minuscule, not at all comparable to what I can do on a cello Without vibrato, this is not much more than a guitar. (well ok, the bowing adds a lot but still).
@DaigurenHynomaru It is a cello, it just has 2 extra strings. Electric Bass Guitars are the same way. Some are 4 strings and the more expensive ones are 6 string. As for Wood Violins (The brand/maker), they also offer their violins in 4 string, 5 string and 6 string models/variations. So...this is certainly a cello.

@vibratingstring The Cobras come in such a wide variety of configurations that it's hard for our dealers to keep them all in stock; however, they can be special-ordered from anyone. As for this recording, it was very "guerilla" and was done that way on purpose. Just a mike in front of an amp. for those of you worried about sound quality, for electric instruments the sound quality is in large part about 50% instrument, 50% amp. The cobra cellos sound fine, it's probably a lousy amp or mic in this video

I think people would've been more excited if the recording was direct from the amp instead of a mic in a room. Good demo though.
I would like to have a fretless one since some orchestral, more so the recent contemporary calls for less strict fingers of tones and such.
@woutertron I wouldn't doubt that. Even the ones that are musically inclined are likely to be swooned. He's quite pleasant.

You cannot expect acoustic sound from a solid body instrument of any kind. it will sound synthetic compared to acoustic instrument anyway. just because of no subtle wood vibrations.

just looks like a cool looking guitar put vertical on a strap with a cello bow.. but dont get me wrong looks and sounds awesome. youre good

I want a 6 string cello without frets or the the rock sound. Can it be played and just sound like a regular wooden string instrument?
Just wondering, would you suggest *some* experience with other instruments, such as the bass, viola, violin, etc. before purchasing the product, or would you say being proficient in the cello would be enough?
