I completely agree with your thoughts about the Discovery, it annoys me to hear anyone say the Discovery is unreliable. Hope you don't mind me adding my comment about my experiences with these vehilces, a bit long but I want to see the D1 and D2 on the roads for years to come so maybe anyone considering buying or that is having concerns about a Disco will read my comment.
My Disco 2 I bought new 17 years ago which was my 2nd Discovery, my first Disco I also bought from new which I drove daily for 6 years before trading it in on my 2002 D2. Never had a head gasket issue in either, no cylinder slippage or overheating issues other than 3 years ago when my D2 overflow/reserve tank had the smaller hose nipple crack and break off. The temp warning light and gauge showed that it was overheating while I was driving threw the mountains, had a few tools and extra antifreeze with me and some epoxy glue so I repaired it temporarily and drove 2 more hours to the next cities auto salvage to find a tank but no luck so I continued on for another 6 hours to get home (checking the levels, oil for any discolour and checked for oil or fluid leaks along the head and block). The only problems I had with either the D1 or D2 were not anything that wouldn't happen to any vehicle, the two times I was disabled on the road was once in the D1 when the rear diff broke which was repaired on warranty, the 2nd break down in my D2 where I was disabled was because of the crank position sensor but that was after 14 years of never being stranded because of problems with the vehicle. A week ago I was forced to limp the disco 2 to a garage because the front prop shaft was vibrating then started clattering but that was my negligence since I had already boughten a new improved prop shaft but was too lazy to install it and just kept adding grease which I only could because I had installed grease nipples 5 years earlier and had the stock driveshaft balanced. There are legitimate problems with the Discovery V8 cylinder sleeves but major issues can be avoided with proper maintenance, regular oil changes, paying attention to the engine temp, and having the Head torqued every 50K and should change the bolts to ARP head bolts (nothing cheaper because they will stretch). Putting an inline thermostat is a good idea but it would be also wise to get a better temp gauge that reads the fluid temp that's flowing in the engine. Land Rover could have dealt with the sleeve slippage by retooling since the machining of the block is why the sleeves slip or drop breaking the seal but with preventive maintenance, you can avoid all the problems people have with Land Rovers (Not just Discoveries). Discoveries are actually one of the best vehicles in its category, if not the BEST! They perform off-road better than any other and are very comfortable on the highway or on city streets. Toyota and Isuzu make a comparable vehicle but not equal or the same. Discoveries are in their own class really and I believe had Land Rover stayed with the same format the discovery could have been as iconic as the Defender since, in reality, it is a far better all-around vehicle that is far more refined than any Defender while being as capable if not more so. I don't feel the same about the LR series, Land Rover obviously didn't as well since after the Discovery they no longer did the Camel Trophy (at least not the true version of it, it became a lifestyle adventure game with bicycles, Kayaks and they avoided the extreme terrain they use to drive the Discoveries threw). Don't be afraid to get a Disco, just be sure you know what to look for and take care of it.

Yup! that's its all true men, its been the same with mine! This one was my daily for for around 12 years and Now I used it as a recreative vehicle! She never left me down and I'm still on original head gaskets and Motor with over 250k miles. This motor its been solid reliable.

Really nice truck . What kind of shocks do you have. .. and if you have part numbers will be awesome....
Also about the Thermostat... I been installing the 2000 jaguar s type 3.0 Thermostat in this cars for a long time . It works way better and cooler than inline Thermostat. Not mention is wat cheaper.... and if you want to make it run cooler install the oem 2008 honda civic hybrid 78' Thermostat.. this way I can promise you you will love it. .... more than 10 disco happy after this upgrade ..... ..

Hey! I’m using Fox 🦊 shocks! 2.0 with 12” of travel all around! Can’t remember the part number but I got them from Lucky8. About my thermostat set up, the in-line thermostat modification puts the whole cooling system to work, by eliminating the 3rd return hose. So now with he in-line mod, the water pump will push 100% coolant into the radiator, not like the other set up that aloud just 50-70% coolant to the radiator. I also went with a full 3row aluminum radiator with much cooling capacity and did the conversion to twin 12” Spal electric fans, now pushing around 5000 cmf all conbines!! Cheers 🥂🇬🇧

I guess you weren't listening and just decided to comment anyway. He has been running this rig on the original head gaskets for 11 years now- because it runs cooler with the in-line thermostat the head gaskets (and others) don't fail. These are terrific vehicles if you address the poorly engineered problems from the BMW team (most of the same problems BMW's are known for since the same team engineered them back when BMW owned Land Rover). Once you fix the known problems once (the right way of course, as he mentions with the Three Amigos) you don't usually have to go in again. But you have to research and do it right. Ask him- he knows.

06:45 Its not at all surprising you haven't broken a diff yet. Stock gears, on 37 is fine structurally, but is going to hurt your torque. You could get your torque back by changing to a higher gear ratio. Higher ratio gears is when you start breaking diffs. That higher ratio means more teeth on the ring gear, fewer teeth on the pinion making those gear sets weaker than stock. Look on google sometime, side by side comparison of 3.73 vs 4.10 or 4.56 and you'll see what i'm talking about.

I did the electric fan conversion to free at least 20 hp, Also install the headers and deleted the cats and also intstall a High performance cam on it! So she moves pretty good believe it or not! 100mph is not a problem at all. Cheers 🍻🇬🇧

    She has automatic change?
to put 37 tires, do you change the differential ratio?

Do you have any more information about your inline thermostat? I'd love to do that on mine.

I bet you cant off road that very much. Because when axles articulate the tires are going to rub like crazy. I've got a disco with 6" lift running 33's. Ive tried running 35's and they start rubbing radius arms and other things. So if you say you can off road I want to see you so a trench crossing diagonally letting the axles drop.

Roverman lol well watch my other recently videos, I got plenty material there cross axle stretching to the Max’s 12” of travel all around no problem

Roverman Bring me your disco, I will make some tweaks here and there and you should be able to run those 35” all day long with not issues.

@@landroverzone9824 just watched another video of yours and you are flexing pretty good with those. I dont run factory rims. I have steel rims that have alot of back spacing. I'll get me some factory dimension steel rims and try the 37's. I've got tons of travel on my rover. I'm running a rovertyme 6" lift with corrected arms. So I guess its junkyard search time for steel wheels with factory dimensions. Cool rover you got. Mines in the thumbnail.

@@landroverzone9824 the wheels in my thumbnail I dont use anymore. I dont like the alloy wheels. I like steel ones because they are stronger and I can put headlock rings on them.

The head gasket goes because of insuficient cooling. That is particuraly true with petrol engines but thr 200/300 tfi has the same proablem. 99% of the times the proablem are eather a radiator that lost the thins, a bad placed temp sensor like in the 300tdi

On Wheels the whole problem is the 3-way thermostat... Need to upgrade to inline t-stat to solve it.

More HP does not equal more MPG

    • @yjmsrv
      @yjmsrv 6 лет назад

Yes, it does, if you're not putting your foot in it. By definition an engine producing more horsepower is more efficient = and therefore gets better MPG...
