This was possibly the best episode yet . I am glad they handled Crosby's relationship with Sandra the way that they did . The real woman in real life was not named "Sandra". Because the makers of the Master's of the Air decided to change her name to something found easier to pronounce. It certainly was a like minded name and the producers decided changing the name in series was for many reasons, As for the moral police. Since this happened in real life history and was mentioned in a book the true to life Crosby did indeed write. I've become obsessed with this series - and this is coming from someone who doesn't really watch TV, but Band of Brothers was my first obsession. This is my second. I watched this episode greedily - wanting to see where Cros ended up, how Rosie was dealing with being the last bird in the air, and what happened to Egan. I have to say he's not one of my favorite characters, but he serves a purpose - and in this episode, especially with the Nazi interrogation officer, he shows his honor. He's not just a party boy. So for his character, this was an important episode. But I digress - so everything was going along in the storyline and I was thinking this was a different episode because there were no missions in it - but it 'was' different in that there was so much more brutality. You feel the war on the ground. You feel the hatred on both sides. Egan goes through he!! and then ends up at the luftwaffe camp. He sees Crank. Well, I start bawling. Then he sees Buck. I still haven't stopped crying since. Having seen Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and many other war movies, I have never seen a moment like that. Just the way those two look at each other when they see one another is everything. No words. Just expressions. The writing in this series is brilliant because we are emotionally invested in these characters. It's brutal when they take them away from us (a la Curt). I think that emotional connection is what made this episode so much sweeter. We all felt like we personally just saw Crank and Buck again, much like Bucky did. Huge kudos to the writers of MOTA - this one is far and away one of the best series I've ever seen.
Why is it every morning before I head to work I ask Alexa to play Soar- Theme from Masters of the Air? Just to get me into my “rhythm” (Thanks Rosie Rosenthal)
Watched it last night and I gasped, laughed and cried out loud when I saw Buck. I was kinda expecting it (based on the opening titles), but my heart soared. Kinda glad I drove two hours to Surrey to see my best friend last week
In the scene with the dead Americans being transported in the carriage, the dying American positioned next to Bucky was murmuring the Lord's Prayer before he was murdered with a shovel. Heartbreaking.
Regarding transporting the body its not only callousness its also book keeping. The tranport officer in charge of the train will have signed for X amount of prisoners, if he arrives with X-1 he will have to account for a suspected escape, have to do reports from the marshalling yard and the guards, acount for expended ammunition and generally ruin his night. If he brings the body he has all the prisoners he signed for, his jobs done.
This is sad, amazing, heartbreaking and beautiful acting.... It seems like forever before the next one is released.... I knew nothing about this time in history. I have now purchased the Masters of the Air novel and a Wing and a Prayer. We are so blessed to have these wonderful heroes protecting our freedom ✈️❣️✈️❣️
A big error I saw in this episode was Bucky was openly moving in the daylight after being shot down in Germany where he could and was easily spotted. Rule 101: hide in daylight move at night.
How far would he have got even if he was trained in evasion? Trying to get help from any slave workers would have been a death sentence to them. He’d never get out of Germany.
I wonder how will they handle the second Schweinfurt raid on October 14, 1943? That was the raid that convinced the USAAF to cut back on the raids deep into Germany until they could get fighter escort that could stay with the bombers all the way to the target and back.
When the prisoners arrive at the POW camp at the end of the episode, the caption reads October 17th, 1943’ so I’m assuming the second Schweinfurt mission won’t be included? Unless the next episode has a different timeline.
Yes, this series went wrong with part 6: -GMC tucks in the background at Stalag luft 3. -"Bronze star" ribbons on a uniform. While the bronze star award has not yet been awarded. -Flemish villages that look like British villages...?! Huh, really! -The Luftwaffe interrogation officer has no eagle on his uniform. German officers and soldiers who were prisoners of war often did this. Remove the eagle from the uniform. But not during the war. Strange things, all failing pieces.
Mannnnnn that train scene hit hard. Like with the sound of the beat of the steam engine of the locomotive being slowed down it just hammers home what is going to happen to them...
I agree with you. It is the best episode so far. I had wondered how they would address Luft Stalag III, Sagan. Nice introduction to it. Great drama and story lines in the middle of war. Best show on TV.
Stalag Luft III. I guess we will see the event of Great Escape (24/25 March 1944) in few months timeline. Munster raid was 5th November 1943. Great escape was RAF action, so likely no tv show character will escape or be shot during that event. Credit scenes shows some prisoner march from camp to west at the ending of the war, when red army was closing to the POW camp.
The first 5 episodes allowed these men to get into our hearts. To understand who they were as flyers and feel possessive about their fates. I feel Episode 6 allowed us to get into their hearts now. We're totally invested in them as humans with individual stories. The air battles, no longer don't need to play a role. I've never watched a TV show that ignited a need in me for more information about their destinies after the war. It's surreal watching later interviews with some of these men, relaying their stories while at the same time seeing it in the show.
Definitely one of my favorite episodes. The series just keeps getting better… Another show that just started “Constellations “, with 3 episodes out on Apple TV+ is worth the watch and perhaps a review?
I haven’t seen the series. Did it mention that Rosenthal was Jewish? It was certainly a major source of his aggression in combat. He would eventually lead the raid that destroyed most of central Berlin.
In this exact scene (7:31), he was asked if he could ride a horse. He replied, "The Jews from Brooklyn don't ride horses." So yes, they pointed that out.
Any chance they get, they take. I haven't watched any of this yet - let me guess - Bomber Command deliberately aimed at civilians whereas the US Air Force only bombed military targets - when they finally decided to join in of course.
I thought the show was perfect since the get-go, but they achieved the impossible of getting even better with each episode! I mostly appreciate that the Germans were shown as absolute monsters, no "both sides", no moral equivalencies, simply black and white imperfect good vs. ultimate evil.
People pulling their dead and dying loved ones out of their burned and blasted homes would be emotionally distraught, throw in Joseph Goebbles’ hypocritical rabid _Terror Flyers_ propaganda and any of them could go over the edge. American cities were not subjected to industrial bombing, there is nothing to compare it with. A lot of German perpetrators were identified and hanged after the war, the victors made the rules.
@@janvisser4132 Yeah, he completely missed the doppelganger scene of Egan walking through a city street in the aftermath of a bombing and seeing a mother crying for her dead child.
You summed it up very well, this is the episode on the ground but this episode showed us what these amazing hero's went through on the ground. It shows us at the same time they were human too. Brilliant episode yes for me it is even/ par with episode 5 ( amazing air drama) both get 9.5 out of 10 for me.
Gale was so skinny. Remember the American airmen probably didn't realize what they were witnessing at the train station. Which makes the scene even more chilling.
i loved seeing Buck at the end, but I had a feeling that would happen. I also think the interrogation scene was incredible. Shows you how good those bastards were at getting info when needed. I just loved the juxtaposition between the two men. Both held similar jobs yet were the complete opposite. Bucky being more built, and rugged VS him who seemed to be a skinny nerdy child (he couldn't even finish the little bit of whiskey, while Bucky downed it immediately). The interrogator clearly displayed characteristics that showed he spent time living in the US. Especially with his comment about how American smokes are so much better than german. Would mean he spent enough time there to light a few cigarettes. Probably went to school somewhere in the US, probably Harvard or Yale. I wouldn't be shocked if he was one of those rich kids who got to see the world, and they are using him for his brains. I dont know why I love that scene so much.
This is the first time in the series I felt connected to the characters like in BOBs. But where’s Quinn? Two episodes without seeing that storyline is strange. I do think the last 2 episodes were so good because Austin Butler wasn’t in them.
It definitely has its flaws, but it’s been a very enjoyable and ‘informative’ watch. I’m curious as to how it holds up in a full, on-demand watch through after the series is done, because I think the editing and pacing might let it down compared to how measured other series are.
As soon as I seen the prison camp I realized this is the great escape camp and it's got me curious how much are the tunnels and escape going to be a part of the series
Great point @ 4:49 "no matter what side you're on there's innocent people that get caught up in the devastation that's going on". I wish people could see this in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
I like the show - particularly the characterisation. But I find the subtle digs at the British a little bit tiring. Or - perhaps I should say the British men. It's a bit too much like a cheap trope.
I am slightly concerned about the historical accuracy of this episode. Or at least the way it represented being an American POW in Germany. I have no doubt that everything in this episode happened at one point in the war, but they were exceptions, not the rule. In general, the treatment of American POWs by Germany was in line with the regulations of the Geneva Convention. It wasn't as good as the American treatment of German POWs by quite a margin, but generally, it wasn't as bad as portrayed here. So showing the exception instead or at least without the general reality doesn't accurately portray the situation in WW2. That also makes me worry about the historical accuracy of the entire series.
Crews were lynched? Shot out of hand, and many Germans were tried AND executed post war? Russelheim being I imagine where they got the inspiration for M of the A? Where a handful of aircrew were murdered brutally by locals. Acts like this happened throughout World War 2. Normally local Gauleiters being responsible along with police?
History and Hollywood are two different tales. While the series itself is mostly historically accurate, there is certain narrative that requires perpetual reinforcement.
One would have to be naive to think that flight crew were not killed, it was part of the horror of the war to drop bombs on civilians but any responsible flight crew dropping in on top of them were not to be touched? it would be difficult to be a saint all the time. The allies executed a lot of flight crew killers after the war.
@@givenfirstnamefamilyfirstn3935 Indeed. To this day airmen are trained that it's much more preferable to be captured by armed forces than by civilians - for that very reason.
I love this series I really do but this show is really telling me something that Hollywood just isn’t understanding. Good quality television IS possible. It doesn’t have to be just superhero’s or cheaply made tv shows or movies made just to hook people. Series like these are rare and I just wish we could stop with the mediocre. Like stuff isn’t even bad it’s just not good and so frustrating. But then again it makes shows like this shine all the more.
Then we have seen plenty of morons outraged at being expected to pay to watch the series, they are the sort who are used to years of pirating creative media and still expect outstanding productions freely made available to them, paid for by all the dumb suckers. How many times do they get into cinemas or theatres for free?
I felt that Crosby’s bit in this episode was unnecessary as we spent a good portion of the first few episodes from his perspective and would have liked to see more B17’s.
It's a decent show. It's nothing close to Band of Brothers or The Pacific, but it's good. If this is the best show on TV right now, it just goes to show how far the craft has fallen. They all used to be like this. Generation Kill is another one. It's a good show, but man are we starved for anything decent these days.
I love this series and they are getting so much historically correct, but this episode annoyed me, because Buck is wearing his dress service cap. He certainly wasnt wearing it when he jumped, so the Germans must be supplying the prisoners with uniforms
I think a lot of people skip the opening title scene’s because they contain spoilers (I do), it’s not uncommon. They did the same thing with BOB and The Pacific.
Yes, probably the best episode so far (but that's not saying much...). Yet it still suffers from one of the main problems of the series - jumping around too much at times. The whole Egan thing in particular feels completely disjointed. But maybe that is just Callum Tuyrner's awful acting... And talking of disjointed - what has happened to Sgt Quinn?! We saw him in Episode 5 going into Paris (in another disjointed thread), but no mention this time. This is such an annoying production! So many great things, and so much rubbish!
I loved the Episode. My dad was a kid in WW2 and the Rüsselsheim Scene was pretty close, the average german didn't know what was going on, on a larger scale, they were fed constant Propaganda (Points to Russia these days) and unlike today there was no Social Media. They believed that the stuff the media sold them was the truth. Including the lies that the Americans were Terrorbombing (that was mostly the Brits) , while the Americans tried to use precision bombing on military targets.
The Americans may have tried to precision bomb targets, but dont believe the hype. They were mostly innacurate too. That explains why they had to go back over and over again. Since you mention terror bombing. It's funny how the Americans had a conscience about bombing German civilians but not Japanese so much. I read of one anecdote from an RAF bomber crewman talking to an American crewman. "We are area bombing area targets. You lot are area bombing presicion targets"
Precision was exception to the rule, the US killed civilians also, bombing wasn’t too accurate in the war torn European skies as it had been in California. Germany sowed the seed of their own defeat, “sowed the wind now they will reap the whirlwind” “Bomber” Harris.
@@leth9320 completely agree, fire bombing of Japanese cities, purposeful burning of houses and people sadly, one raid later on in war claimed 100,000 it was said, yet Bomber command is always vilified? Stones in glass houses…..
My problem with the episode is that it takes an event from 1944, but moves it to 1943 for some reason? Then also changes the location. I think this was the worst episode.
Forgive my autism diagnosed by a neuropsychologist, but where are the dogfights? I'm not here to watch emotions I can't understand on faces I can't read. Gimme some goddamn planes!

Just to get me into my “rhythm”
(Thanks Rosie Rosenthal)
Thinking of my paratrooper Dad jumping out of planes in WW2. This show is really good.
Watched it last night and I gasped, laughed and cried out loud when I saw Buck. I was kinda expecting it (based on the opening titles), but my heart soared.
Kinda glad I drove two hours to Surrey to see my best friend last week
Same! I started tearing up, lol. Amazing!
You were spot on. This is a very good review, of the best episode yet. Masters of The Air is up there with Band Of Brothers, and The Pacific.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Even though I knew Cleven was still alive it was so happy to see him back in the show. And seeing that Krank survived was nice too
In the scene with the dead Americans being transported in the carriage, the dying American positioned next to Bucky was murmuring the Lord's Prayer before he was murdered with a shovel.
“The list is correct. You have to understand, it's the paperwork."
-- German Train Station Soldier, "Schindler's List."
Best episode by a mile so far. Simply amazing. Hope the rest of it continues like this
It was just incredible wasn't it!
Egan's storyline was TERRIFYING this episode.
It really was. Some of the most brutal moments we've seen in the show! It was horrifying to watch!
I’ll tell you what, if there is an outbreak of WW3, I’m being stationed in the UK and finding the granddaughter of Sandra, holy smokes
I truly admit I am so hooked on Masters of the Air. It is one of the best shows that I seen in a very long time.
I agree! It's the best show on TV right now
Him doing the drum tap with his fingers to get his mindset right to climb in the plane was my favorite part
Yeah that was a great moment. Tapped into him being the drummer of the band!
A big error I saw in this episode was Bucky was openly moving in the daylight after being shot down in Germany where he could and was easily spotted. Rule 101: hide in daylight move at night.
Was that an error of the show or judgement?
How far would he have got even if he was trained in evasion? Trying to get help from any slave workers would have been a death sentence to them. He’d never get out of Germany.
@@FootageThroughSimulationIsn't Bucky the brains of the 100th?
I wonder how will they handle the second Schweinfurt raid on October 14, 1943? That was the raid that convinced the USAAF to cut back on the raids deep into Germany until they could get fighter escort that could stay with the bombers all the way to the target and back.
Yeah I'm intrigued to see a few different events that are set to come up in the timeline!
When the prisoners arrive at the POW camp at the end of the episode, the caption reads October 17th, 1943’ so I’m assuming the second Schweinfurt mission won’t be included? Unless the next episode has a different timeline.
In the titles, there are shots of the Red Tails, so maybe it will jump to thatvaspect of fighter escort in and around D Day.
Yes, this series went wrong with part 6:
-GMC tucks in the background at Stalag luft 3.
Buck and bucky reuniting was done so good.. every human will get tears watching it.. cheers to the bond of brothers❤
Yeah that was such a great moment!
Yes. Excellent. 5&6 are great episodes.
They really are!
Mannnnnn that train scene hit hard. Like with the sound of the beat of the steam engine of the locomotive being slowed down it just hammers home what is going to happen to them...
It was such a powerful, heartbreaking scene to watch. It showed terror in such a haunting way. It's just horrific
Crosby has indirectly admitted that he had a romantic relationship with Sandra in his book
I had a feeling... I really didnt want to believe it but I had a feeling that some details were being omitted/fudged...
The prisoners at stalag luft 3 were not treated horribly. That’s why you seen them in this series as happy. Do some research on Stalag luft 3.
I was hoping the Tuskegee Airmen would show up, but a friend told me they will a token appearance in the last episode probably for like 5 minutes.
Everything that happens in this show feels like it's too good to be true but most of it did happen. Buck and Bucky reuniting was one of them.
I agree with you. It is the best episode so far. I had wondered how they would address Luft Stalag III, Sagan. Nice introduction to it. Great drama and story lines in the middle of war. Best show on TV.
If you liked the song, it’s sung by Eithne. Available on Spotify, Apple Music etc.
I almost burst to tears when i realised that they are in "The great Escape" prison
Yeah that was such a powerful moment
Yes, I'll be on that next week. I watched the first two episodes, and gonna have a video on episode 4 out in time for Wednesday when it releases 😊
Yeah and the name Rosenthal is a dead giveaway! 😂
Each episode gets better and better but they love making the English look bad 🇬🇧
Yeah it does just keep getting better and better!
I think you watch this with an agenda because I don't get that from this series.
Totally agree! It just shows how well the show is written that it can have nothing in the air and be one of the best episodes!
i cant wait for D day this is one of my most favourite shows all time so F good
Same. Echo everything you said…this show is outstanding
Gale was so skinny. Remember the American airmen probably didn't realize what they were witnessing at the train station. Which makes the scene even more chilling.
I agree the show is awesome. Better then I had expected I wish it was ten episodes but nine will do.
i loved seeing Buck at the end, but I had a feeling that would happen.
The actual person went to Columbia University in NYC.
@@LuisSoto-ho5fw oh interesting
If you want to know more of the 'friendship' between Harry and Sandra..... Read his book. Don't think they'll delve deeper into that storyline tbh
Thanks for the recommendation!
De lo mejor esta serie!
Gracias a este gente tenemos la libertad
This is the first time in the series I felt connected to the characters like in BOBs. But where’s Quinn? Two episodes without seeing that storyline is strange. I do think the last 2 episodes were so good because Austin Butler wasn’t in them.
Yeah I'm intrigued to see what's going to happen with Quinn!
This show is getting really good, It really picked up in the last two episodes.
Yeah it really did!
A good episode, a bit more human and great to get to know the characters even better and what they were dealing with.
Exactly! Taking a look inside of their mind has been really interesting
Yeah i'm intrigued to see how much is going to be shown!
thanks for the vide
Great point @ 4:49 "no matter what side you're on there's innocent people that get caught up in the devastation that's going on". I wish people could see this in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
How would the officers who jumped out of a doomed B-17 still have their hats in the POW camp?
I like the show - particularly the characterisation. But I find the subtle digs at the British a little bit tiring. Or - perhaps I should say the British men. It's a bit too much like a cheap trope.
Was it me or wunderkinder interrogator was missing standard lufewaffe breast eagle.🙄
Jman
The Bear is a worthy adversary imo
So much storying telling remaining for 3 episodes. Crazy.
I know! It's gonna be interesting to see how they handle it
ridiculously good
Great analysis
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the vid!
I hear you…but it is based on his book!
It's a decent show. It's nothing close to Band of Brothers or The Pacific, but it's good. If this is the best show on TV right now, it just goes to show how far the craft has fallen. They all used to be like this. Generation Kill is another one. It's a good show, but man are we starved for anything decent these days.
Well, that is what happens when the MESSAGE comes before the story. And the studios wonder why the top ten streamed shows of 2023 were all 'old'?
@@chromiumphotography5138 ThE mEsSaGe! Good point.
I love this series and they are getting so much historically correct, but this episode annoyed me, because Buck is wearing his dress service cap. He certainly wasnt wearing it when he jumped, so the Germans must be supplying the prisoners with uniforms
Which one is Quin, the one in Belgium?
Yeah! The last we saw of him was when he panicked and tried to run off the train in France
If seeing Buck alive surpised you, you have not been watching opening titles carefully enough
I think a lot of people skip the opening title scene’s because they contain spoilers (I do), it’s not uncommon. They did the same thing with BOB and The Pacific.
1:59 American airmen , not soldier :)
Well put together analysis, loved it!
I dont need it explained,,,some things resolved ,i do hope it doesnt become hogans heroes
Still a better bestfriend story than twilight.
Fantastic series, un-clichéd and unexpected. Well done.
Totaly-cliched!
It is great in parts, but awful in others.
The whole opening scene in episode one is a massive cliche!
They should have never put this on Apple TV. No one will see it
Yes, probably the best episode so far (but that's not saying much...).
It’s not band of brothers though. It’s the worst out of the 3 is just slow. Like it’s good but not wow
3:38 did they really not put the SS logo on the German soldiers collar?
Luftwaffe collars, not ss
My problem with the episode is that it takes an event from 1944, but moves it to 1943 for some reason? Then also changes the location. I think this was the worst episode.
The worst ? Bruh!!
@@kevinwatson530 Yeah, I thought it was the worst episode so far. It is so far the only episode I did not enjoy unlike the other five.
Forgive my autism diagnosed by a neuropsychologist, but where are the dogfights? I'm not here to watch emotions I can't understand on faces I can't read. Gimme some goddamn planes!
Just 'people' going to a concentration camp??
Show is not that great at all
Just wow? It's absolutely garbage. Complete let down in comparison to BofB and The Pacific. It's just a drama with actors thinking they're in some Hollywood film.
puke,
Seems this episode has been the worst so far. Not happy at all
This episode was by far the worse. What’s up with all the cringy comedic crap?
Thank you. The worst! I thought it was me. All the manjinas talking about crying- GMAFB! Must be in mom’s basement playing war games all day and night. STFU and grow a pair!
I genuinely thought they would send both Rosenthal and the doctor, and Crosby and his roommate Sandra down some unnecessary romantic plotlines.
