Having a daughter of 3 years, my playing time is pretty much limited to early mornings before 7. At other times I am either busy or too tired. However, it helped me focus on the stuff I want to get better at. Besides, she used to tell each of my many guitars good night on after another ("good night blue guitar") and today complemented me on my new squier. So, kids and guitars, it's a match made in heaven :D

Great video - thank you. I played guitar from age 10 to 25, quite seriously, then had a 10-year hiatus. That hiatus ended shortly after my first child was born. He's now four, and I've really got back into guitar in the last few years. COVID and kids meant that playing out, playing at home, or trying new gear in a shop were all virtually impossible. All my energy went into GAS - 7 guitars and about 70 pedals later, I've maybe started to come out the other side a bit. I've just ordered a Quad Cortex (inspired primarily by the incredible sounds you get out of it) because I realised that what I enjoyed was tinkering with effects and signal chains, and trying to get sounds to match songs I want to learn (and perhaps one day gig). What I didn't enjoy was endlessly swapping patch cables, never finishing a pedalboard, and the ability it all had to distract me from actually playing and practising. Your channel has been wonderful for keeping a bit of that gear stuff in my world, but focusing a lot more on playing and inspiration.
As for the kids: I don't have room in the house to leave a guitar and amp set up and ready to go, and I definitely couldn't play through an amp before or after work. I've consciously embraced playing with headphones in my shed (mainly through Strymon Iridium and DSM & Humboldt Simplifier DLX). It gives me none of the trouser-flapping loveliness of a real amp but I find that, because I can't hear the acoustic sound of the strings (or anything else), it's quite an immersive experience, and the stereo capabilities of something like a QC make a big difference. I guess, as you've said before, the main thing is to make sure you still enjoy playing, however and whenever it happens.
I do most of my playing/tinkering from about 10pm onwards when everyone else is asleep. I often go to bed way too late, but since the kids arrived I've been pretty tired non-stop, so sometimes trading a few hours sleep for some time alone, headspace, and music-making is worth the heavy eyelids the next day. Best of luck for the next few days, weeks and months. And remember - EVERYBODY is winging it.

I have three kids, so I bought a REVV D20. I love the versatility of it. It's small and the fact that you can use headphones and cab simulators are great. Sounds great sonically to me as well. I have two electric guitars and one acoustic. And a bunch of pedals. Trying to use my gas money on courses now in stead of gear. Not always easy.
Best of luck with your kid and family life. It's a pretty fine life.

Online courses since the dawn of time a long with any university course for artistic stuff. It's all a scam. Everything you learn from these courses is free online, often told by the same people makin a shitload by packaging common knowledge in a slick course and pretending its a secrets you can only get from them.

I'm about to have a massive sell off of my collection - over 30 guitars in a one bedroom flat that looks more like a secondhand guitar store 😂- and I've motivated myself to do this by promising myself a PRS Silver Sky SE which I have been close to pressing the "buy" button for last two months. To be fair to myself, I have spent the last three years learning the basics of guitar luthier inspired by the lockdown, so most of the guitars were a mess when I got them and I used them to hone my skills in repair and electronics. However, the worst aspect is I have spent more time collecting these guitars than playing and need to cut down to a max of around 10-12 that I can put on the racks. I have to say though, it's really hard to choose which guitars to get rid of because i have invested time and a lot of love and care in bringing them back to playability, but it's ridiculous having them here not getting played when someone else could be enjoying them on a daily basis. Do I regret buying them? Not at all as they have been an experience and taught me so much. However, the need for living space now I am back in contact with human beings again means they must leave this Battersea Dogs home for unwanted guitars and find new owners 😎😎😎

What I love about guitars is designing a room around the beauty of almost any guitar, simply on a stand or on a wall or even resting on a couch. I’m also a mid range guitar player but I find guitars also double as art. I can easily find myself staring at some of my guitars. They all come with a mood to them, playing the specific guitar comes down to how I feel, but I rarely get sick of looking at them so there’s never too many guitars if you can afford it 😊 do you like the P90s John?

Playing with young kids in the house story:
My main guitar has been a Guild Starfire V (es335 style with factory bigsby). The semi hollow is so loud it wakes my kids up. I recently put it on sabbatical and am forcing myself to use my Les Paul almost exclusively. Love that guitar, for sure! But I’d rather play it because I feel inspired to pick that one up, not because I’m afraid of waking the kiddos.
Maybe it’s time to get my strat refretted? 🤷‍♂️ 😅
Congrats on the little one coming!! Being a dad is one of the absolute highlights of my life. Dive in, man! Don’t hold back. Cheers from across the pond.

I'm a father of two and it was next to impossible having time to follow a hobby besides the family. That may be caused by working a dayjob including the comute, plus having a fair portion of the care at home because my wife was working, too. So after a very long day when the kids are finally sleeping I had to decide between a very short time with my wife or an activity. In both cases, I did not have much energy left.
And what wasn't also left much of was money to spend on gear. But there will be better times. I got very quickly back into the saddle of living my passion for guitar after my wife and I broke up. So, I guess there is a bit of a silverlining when it comes to playing😁

I just enjoy playing them all. I'm no gear snob - I'd say my Vintage V100 Midge Ure has great merits (and snags), and my US PRSs are cool too (I actually play them less). Variety is also cool. I'm gassing for an Epi Lee Malia RD/Explorer and an Epi Johnny A (I can't stretch to a Gibson Johnny A without selling a few). Oh, and I used to collect children (4) but they're all grown up. I infected one of them with guitar GAS too.

The SG and a lovely Music Man Albert Lee model have never been out of the house, and don't get a lot of play, but, can't part with them for various reason. Of the remaining, only 3 are gigged regularly. A year or so ago, my band decided to play everything a half step dropped which has very much complicated things for me in terms of set up and usage. I decided NOT to drop all them so, consequently I have as many guitars that I don't use, as ones I do use. But at this stage of my life, I would rather not sell any because I don't think what I have is excessive at all.

I know people with all kinds of funky 12 strings and mandolins hanging around, lots of variety/novelty in their collections (but usually not in playable condition). I seem to have focused on variation only within Strats and Teles. But I kind of feel a weight looming over me having as many as I do, and It's not really that many. I tried to build the 'perfect' Strat from Warmoth parts (so I could get rid of the rest) and it came out awesome, but by then the "target" had moved and my idea of perfect had changed. In the end I feel like I need several new guitars every year, I just need to also sell an equal amount of guitars. Guitars must flow. I lose inspiriation if I'm not planning the next partscaster. I get ideas for future builds from semi-lengthy imperfect relationships with other guitars. If I had to grab only 1 guitar during an emergency or something, the fire/flood/alien invasion or whatever would kill me before I could decide. I haven't found "the one".

I think it's best to try and take advantage of differences between guitars, and explore that as a stepping stone toward creativity and discovering something new. But, I wish that I could get away with having just one guitar that could do everything. Violinists often have one instrument that they use to play music spanning the centuries.

I went through a big guitar purge a couple of years ago but since then the collection has increased back up to where it used to be. The problem now is that my current set of guitars suits me quite well, certainly better than before the last purge.
I've reconciled with the reality that I like guitars, I like a wide variety of guitars and that is unlikely to change.
Like you I've come to the point where I don't have much room for any more and that's fine. Maybe I'll sell one or two in time. Maybe I'll buy one or two but nothing is really calling to me right now so I'm in a happy stasis point and that's OK.
If there's a guitar you don't actually want to play sell it. If there is a guitar you wish you'd get around to playing more keep it. Don't be a hoarder but you don't need to punish yourself for having an indulgence either.

Just keep the strats John, these are the guitars that you sound the best with (not sure if that is a grammatically correct english sentence but you get what I mean)
As for me, I have 3 normal guitars (one is at my parent's so I don't have to bring one everytime) and a baritone one, I really enjoy my strat for clean stuff and the Chapman for heavier stuff, the baritone of course for drop A stuff. (mind I am a terrible guitar player, I mostly like tweaking and enhancing guitars)
I also play bass so I have 3 basses (jazz bass, pbass, Warwick Corvette) and on the fence of getting one more Warwick (5 strings)
I am also quite shit at playing bass...

Over the last few months, I've sold five guitars. I kept two. A Hwy1 Stratocaster (I've swapped out the pickups to Fender Custom Shop 54s) and an Epiphone SG Classic I keep tuned in open E for playing slide. I'd say 75% of the time I'm on that Strat neck pickup. But once in a while I want some of that humbucker growl so I thought I'd miss not having a humbucker guitar. Then I discovered my amp (Boss Katana Artist) has a guitar simulator gizmo in it and it does a pretty good job of getting my Strat to sound Gibson-ish. It's not perfect but what in life is?

I've started selling of guitars. I have way to many guitars with similar sound, pickup configuration etc. I've come to the conclusion I "need" about 6 of them.
One high output humbucker, one low output humbucker, one semihollow (p90) and one single coil Strat. On top of that I have my first ever guitar and an acoustic.

Some may say that any more than one acoustic and one electric is technically too many, if you're not a professional musician. BUT, who cares what they say?
I'm not a pro and I have several guitars cos they each give me something else. Yes, when you have several it can get expensive and they take up lots of space. But it's all part of the process that guitar players go through. You need to acquire and play and hear and feel the differences in the instruments yourself to gain that knowledge and satisfy your curiosity more than anything - it's part of the guitar journey. Because to the ear that is listening and the hands that are feeling, that other guitar does give something different to the one you are currently playing. It might be subtle or it might be monstrously different - but that tone and the feel is a real thing. Plus, acquiring gear keeps the economy going, it keeps the guitar makers and the guitar retailers in business. So I wouldn't sweat it, unless the wife is nagging. 🙂 Great playing, btw.

My problem is going to end up being boxes of spare parts because I enjoy building and modifying as much as I do playing.

Until recently I had 19 guitars. I have just sold 2 and I want to reduce to 6. I have Gibson, Fenders, Kiesel, Musicman, Alhambra, Yamaha, Guild all for sale. I love guitars and my mind was telling me that I need all the different pickup combination guitars. I am just selling all my pedals too except a lot of TC which are low cost. I have Axe FX III and Mooer Prime P1 that's enough. Amps going include Marshal Origin, Laney IRT studio and so on. I same as you not using them. So they need to go.

I’ve always decided on guitars based on what I was doing with them and mainly tunings. Only play in E-D standard? I would only have a main guitar and a backup. Even for my (extremely short!) time playing metal and then jazz gigs in college, I had 2 PRS and 2 LTD single cut guitars, and each with very different pickups. Before that were Ibanez Prestige. But I’ve never had much luck with sounding any better or different buying a new/different/hyped/vintage guitar.
I’ve got a 2 1/2 year old, and the only guitar I get to play regularly now is acoustic.

The 'British racist green' line was worth this month's Patreon fee all on its own. My oldest friend and long term musical partner only had a tele when we first started playing together 40 years ago. Over the years he built quite a collection of guitars that "covered all bases". Ten years ago he sold them all and went back to spanking the Tele. He says it was the most liberating thing he has ever done in his life. How will life change when you have a baby? beyond all recognition, really. Treasure it.

i cured my gas by accident. i was accumulating alot of pedals. at one point i bought an eventide pitchfactor because i needed a harmonizer for a song my band was doing. along the way, the band broke up. i found that when i plugged in the pitchfactor, i'd spend 3 hours making cool noises, but not actually making music. i decided to sell it. when i did, i realized i had a bunch of pedals i didn't use, so i sold those too. at that point, i thought about it, and decided i would only keep what i needed to "do what i do" going forward.
too many guitars is a subjective thing, as long as they aren't redundant, and you actually play them. for example, having 2 les pauls with humbuckers, would be redundant. i have 4 guitars and a bass now. there is some overlap, but generally, each one does something the others don't. other than building one just for the fun of doing it, i have all the guitars i'll ever need. my board is pretty small, and 2 amps do whatever i need to do.

I feel like I'm very pragmatic about having guitars. I have a 7 guitar rack & once that's full it's full. I want a new one, I gotta make room. I also keep all my guitars in different tunings, and do my best to not overlap specs. Currently I have 2 guitars with the same pickups, and that irks me, despite being in different tunings & being wholly different constructions (solid mahogany/hollow maple). I feel that's the right number of guitars for me, though I may not have the right guitars for me.

Selling turns out to be something I'm enjoying ALMOST, as much as buying guitars. I was never inclined to outright sell any guitars over the last 3 years, but would usually trade them in, or for another one I wanted. I've gotten some reward from knowing the ones I sell are all dialed in and ready to go, with no problems. Nice to hear when someone raves over how it was in tune out of the case, and plays like butter. You don't realize how many people play crappy guitars everyday, and don't even really know it.

Waiting on a lefty baritone that should be out this summer...will buy new. I would really invest in some better headphones. I have to moniter with headphones to keep the noise down, and it doesn't have to be a big downgrade from studio moniters. The senns you use are a bit rolled off in the top end, I would recommend maybe the HD600s, Hifiman Edition XS or Focal Elex. Just try a few and find one that gives you the closest feeling to speakers, and then playing silently doesn't have to be less inspiring.

They're all different (pickups, body shape, scale lengths, etc) and have their own thing going on, but I don't *need* all of them. I've got four of them for sale right now but no takers, so I guess I'm stuck with them (or selling them off really cheap).

Exciting times, the future smallest person in the house will take up more space indeed. Advise would give: make sure you get a mancave outside of the house, but close by (less then 5mins walk), so you can quickly go out and be able to play. Investing money in this is better then more gear. If I were you I would reduce the collection to 3-5 electrics and 1 acoustic (the best of each flavor, and start letting certain guitar types go). You can only play one at the time and you sound similar anyway indeed. Take care!
