- Travel with the train driver as we travel from Flinders Street station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to Sandringham in the South Eastern suburbs on a restored TAIT electric suburban train that is over 100 years old. This train was running special shuttle trips for the general public on this day in February, 2024.

You're welcome. I am happy you enjoyed the ride 👍 😊
Takes me back to riding a reddie home from Yarraville-city-Bonbeach on a hot summer day, the sounds and smell. Now when I ride my hub motor ebike the wine of the motor takes me back to great days!
The sounds of the old days but as much as it is pract, the ebike might not provide the charm of sitting in a red. 🤔😀 Glad you enjoyed the ride. 👍😀
Ahhhhhhhhh, the sound of those motors takes me way back. I rode the taits so many times back in the day though I never rode in the cab but the sound of those motors and the horn is unmistakable. There are videos of riding inside the refurbished Taits and the memories come pouring back, seeing the workwork, the ornate ceiling lights and the ornate ceilings themselves and the sound of the air compressors starting up while at the station..."Lackalackalackalackalacaka...". Not to mention the clack clack of the rails which you don't hear anymore. I used to have to catch the train from Broady station to Ascot Vale in the early morning and in the winter cold it was way better to hop onto a Tait than onto a freezing cold Harris.
then the first of the "stainless" trains (can't remember what they were called) started showing up and they were heated, so that was nice. In the summertime, the Taits always ran with the doors open before all the nanny safety regulations kicked in. But my memories from childhood and as an adult are of the Taits and the W class trams with conductors...ahhhhhh...remember them fondly.
Lots of great memories there. It is nice to be able to experience a little of the bygone era again. Glad you enjoyed it 👍😀
Weeee. As you were coming into Elsternwick I caught a glimpse of my Melbourne apartment (as distinct from my house up country ).
You could've watched the Tait go past if you were home 😀😀👍
I lived in Sandringham and rode the Taits regularly as a boy. A trip to the city was 30 minutes, stopping all stations. The tram also ran from Sandy to Black Rock in those days.
Just about the only thing left from the trams now is the bus depot next to the yard at Sandringham. 👍😀
@@driver667 Yes, I saw it at the end of the video. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel on the last tram that left Sandringham at midnight (last train). By the time it went from Sandy to Black Rock and return, everything that wasn't welded down was taken. It was amazing! The yards were quite busy in those days. Most freight came by train and the Parcel's Vans at the station were commonplace. The first Harris trains were tested on the line if I recall and I travelled on them from Sandy to Brighton Beach once a week. I was about 14, so that made it 1956-1957. The Harris was something to behold. I could not have been born and bred in a better place!
@@demmyonline certainly a lot of great memories there. I would love to have seen some of those days. 👍😀
Oh hey I'm there at 5:39 at south yarra in the green jacket. That's cool.
👋👋 waves hello as we go past 😀👍
Buck me, It’s a proper view this time 🎊
You must have the camera on the outside this time 👍
You just may be right 🤔🤔👍😀
Best looking line in Melbourne
Glad you enjoyed the ride and the views 👍😀
My local station, really nice ride! 👍😎
Very happy you enjoyed the ride 👍 😀
Having lived all my life in the western suburbs (Altona) I love watching travels on the "other side" and country runs. I have always wondered if you have a favourite line to drive on city or country?
I like driving all the lines but if pushed for a favourite, maybe Warrnambool. 👍😊
I love the taits and the Harris trains😊
They were classic Victorian trains alright 👍 😀
There's me at Brighton Beach Station 17:46
👋👋 Waves hello to Charlie 👍😀
@@driver667 and remember to give me a long loud friendly toot for me.
@@vlinenclasstrains 😀👍
It is good to see the national trust heritage listed manual gates and gatekeepers cottage at the Bay St level crossing are still there, the ilfated Rosstown Railway was a privately owned line, which closed in 1916,apart from work trains,it was rumoured that only 1 train ran on the poorly constructed line,Willam Ross, the owner tried to sell it to the Victorian Railways, but they had no interest,Ross went bankrupt and the line closed,it's now a rail trail that l walk often,Carnegie was once known as Rosstown
It certainly has an interesting albeit short history. 👍😀
The old girl got up some speed 😅
It can still get up and boogie 🤣👍😀
Sounds like it’s going a flat wheel 🤔
If I remember rightly the Taits had 7 carriages 🤔
Yes they ran up to 7 cars on the TAIT trains. 👍😀
15:47 hi me (2nd closest to the train)
👋👋 Hello there 😀😀👍
Do you miss The sparks Sharpie
Sometimes, I enjoyed my time at the sparks but I'm happy driving for vline nowadays. 👍😊
i drove these trains in the 1980's which i am sure todays genration would not have been around everything was different then semaphore signals ding ding off the guard manned staions surburban goods trains no thermit welded rail just clikerty clack and plenty of character then
The short lengths of rail certainly added to the character back then Rob. I do miss that sound. 🤔👍😀
todayys railway is souless i miss what was once metro were shit to work for total disrepect to me and others from them record amount of drivers sacked and none of them saved by piss weak bystanding union outsiders with no railway upbringing telling us what to doi could go on but i am happily retired driving my old holden which gives me great pleasure@@driver667
👍😀
Are there still garden competitions for stations? 🏳🌈
Not as far as I know. Have not heard of that for years. 👍😀
damn they where awful
Compared to today for the average commuter, you are correct. But for a nice slice of history, they are great. 👍😀
❤🤍💚
My great grandfather used to drive on the Sandringham line for many years 100 years ago. His house backed onto the track just near the station, so first train in the morning wasn't too bad. My 99 yo father still talks about it.
@@davidquin8689 there would be a lot of good stories to tell I bet 😀👍
