Thanks for the upload. Surely this is proof that Bjorling is the finest tenor in recorded history? Absolutely incredible.

Yes, and both Merrill and Warren in the same opera, unique for those two.

De los Angeles' musicianship and beautiful voice, plus her innate dramatic nuances - being only a lyric soprano - are simply out of this world. Her duet with Merrill is incomparable.

Bjoerling sang the role sang the role in Europe, but not in this country, there is one in Sweden in 1954 where he sings it live very well in Swedish, that probably still is is available.

Are you sure about that? I’ve seen a picture of Dorothy Caruso giving him part (all?) of the costume Caruso wore in the role. He was dressed as Canio in the picture, and the caption said it was after a performance of the opera. That could have been in Europe, but she was a New Yorker, and I always assumed the picture was taken at the Met.

" Yes (I'M SURE) , well it could have been taken there after a concert recital in NYC and he did on occasion sing the aria in this country, but Never sang the opera here anywhere in the USA as far as Europe, he did sing it there and I have a 1954 Complete Pag. with him in Sweden, but in Swedish, Stockholm in 1954, and earlier then that he sang it on occasion in Europe but not in Italy. Dorothy did also gave Richard Tucker Caruso's Rigoletto costume and a Canio costume, I do have a listing of all of Bjoerling's live performances, but as with some others he sang in Europe, there are several he did not ever sing here.

@@johnhoie1 No, You have it wrong, the he sang on Feb. 16th 1951 on NBC TV a show called "We The People" JB he was dressed as Canio in his costume and sang the Pag. aria (not the opera) and Dorothy C. when at the time there in the studio and so when the show was over then she gave him the "Duke Rigoletto" Costume that was Enrico's, but not the Pagliacci costume he wore for that show.

@@johnhoie1 Jussi had only one other occasion to see Mrs. Dorothy Caruso, (March 12, 1952) in NYC. they had lunch while he was there and was recording
Trovatore " with Warren and Milanov . The only two times they met.

@@shicoff1398 It was probably that 1951 meeting you referenced. I’m not sure what Caruso costume she was giving him, but Jussi was definitely dressed as Canio from the play within the play.

Bjorling supposedly couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag, but his vocal acting in this recording surpassed all others I’ve heard (e.g. del Monaco, Corelli, Pavarotti or Domingo). I’m not talking about the beauty of his voice, but the emotion pouring out of it.

It's all personal opinion, but for me it's Del Monaco, he is is my own favorite Canio and live his was very hot and passionate, as far as Jussi, and since your a fan of his, I suggest you listen to his complete "live" one from 1954 in Sweden, (the year after this one) it's in Swedish but he is quite passionate in that one, and it is also on you tube, but here in the RCA studio, of course the sound is better in this recording, he did not sing Pagliacci in the opera house here in this country , but did in Europe .
