I know how much work goes into making a gamemode like this, it requires a lot of dedication and everything, but this ain't TF2 anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool concept to take the mechanics and gameplay from Open Fortress and bring them to TF2, but it wouldn't work as an official game mode. It takes away most of the aspects that make Team Fortress 2 what it is. If I want to play OF's deathmatch mode, I'll launch OF and play. I'm not saying that the idea would NEVER work in TF2, it might even be fun to play something different from vanilla TF2 sometimes via community servers like deathrun mode, prop hunt and surf, but in casual mode? No thanks/not interested.
It's a well known fact in gamedev that the more steps something takes to reach (or if it's obscure), the more users will be lost along the way, and not because the destination is bad, but because the journey is.
@@LizardOfOz I agree that the simpler something is, the more people will be willing to try it out But that doesn't mean that Open Fortress should be integrated in TF2, it means that Open Fortress needs to be more widespread so that more people see it through word of mouth and content created around the game, be it gameplay videos, reviews, animations, fanarts, etc. That way, with the game having a community around it, there's also more support for it to be more accessible over time. OF already has a dedicated website with links to download it in a few clicks, as well as a Discord server, social media accounts and an official RUclips channel. In other words, the process of getting playing the game is already very simple, it just needs more people to discover it. And I don't think that a game mode based on OF for TF2 is going to help OF grow. Quite the opposite, in my opinion. I know that the ideal thing for OF would be for it to be officially added to Steam's store page, but until that happens, we should just keep playing and sharing this game with as many people as possible. OF itself already markets itself as a fun experience for TF2 players who are looking for something familiar but different, based on the TF2 universe. Just play Open Fortress. You need to understand that those who play TF2 are there for Team Fortress 2, not for copies of other games forcibly inserted into it. TF2 is not a sandbox, a "metaverse" or a platform like Garry's Mod where you can play anything, TF2 is a game with a specific proposal, with specific characters, with a specific setting and with a specific gameplay phylosophy. Take those elements away, and it's no longer TF2. Again, this doesn't mean that Workshop creators can't experiment with new game modes and general content for Team Fortress 2 using vscript, but they also need to be aware of which game they are making content for. They need to respect the fundamental basis that was structured for it from the start. Two teams. Nine classes. Gun play. Anything that doesn't fit these basic requirements doesn't belong in the vanilla game, but it can still exist as an alternative mode accessible through community servers, without the need for official endorsement from Valve. There, there is greater freedom for all kinds of crazy things to exist without interfering with the general premise of TF2.
A co-op PvE shooter was "forcibly inserted" into TF2 a decade ago, but nobody complains that it was added. If anything, people want more of it. If PvP can be discarded, so can be teams or classes. If anything, Valve did a lot of experiments with halloween gimmicks, pass time (even if outsources), mannpower, etc. Valve simply stopped working on the game before a gamemode without teams or classes could happen.
I was considering making it TDM, or alternatively, FFA with classes, but I felt like _that_ was trying to bend the best the gamemode can be into a compromised experience just to tick what's ultimately a meaningless checkbox. What truly matters is if the end result is fun.
@@LizardOfOz First of all, no. Just because the PVP element isn't present in Mann Vs. Machine doesn't mean the other essential elements of TF2 have been or should be disregarded. That's not how things work. Second, the argument about Valve itself experimenting with alternative game modes in the past lacks coherence. Yes, it's fact that MVM, pass time, mannpower, and halloween are different from the casual experience of TF2, but check it out: MVM - a mode that's completely separate from the casual, paid mode, but still keeps the OTHER aspects of TF2's gameplay intact while adding on top of it. The classes and roles of each class remain, as well as the (now asymmetrical) team system. Halloween mode - as you said, a gimmick. It's a SPECIAL occasion. A game mode that does not interfere with the casual experience of the game and is only active on a few days of the year. It's a celebration. And again, it keeps the game's core systems intact. Nine classes. Two teams. Gun play. And look, one more example that proves what I'm talking about: Mannpower and Pass Time. these gamemodes are the least played modes in the entire game. They're almost always abandoned, it is very difficult to find matches on the official servers, and when people stop to play them, the matches last about half an hour on average. Why? Because these modes only work as "novelties", brief experiences that players briefly seek out but soon return to the vanilla game, because they are too DIFFERENT from the experience they are there to have. They want Team Fortress 2. And yet, these two game modes maintain the base: two teams, nine classes, gun play. Get it now? That's why I used the term "forcibly." There's no point in implementing a game mode as exotic as prop hunt, open fortress deathmatch, or passtime in this game officially if it doesn't make sense with the PREMISE of >Team Fortress 2
Why people are so much against it? I mean i know that tf2 has more important problems such as the bot crisis but i think it would be a great addition inorder to revive tf2 if valve even cares about tf2. People are overreacting just because some dude wearing purple falsely said tf2 had a team deathmatch mode years ago.
I've always felt Open Fortress would work better as it's own game on steam rather than as a game mode for TF2. It's a fast paced arena shooter with the same style as TF2, not a slight alteration of TF2.
