Edit: Apparently Canary Island autonomy was in 1982, but revised in 2018. My mistake.
Macaronesia, funnily enough, is not the opposite of Micronesia but rather means “Islands of the Fortunate.”
Thank you for that clarification.
Maybe we can call the Arctic Archipelago and Greenland Macronesia.
The canary islands became autonomous in the early 80s but the video only shows as such late in the 90s. Is that a mistake or is there a reason for that?
So Macarons are fortune cookies?
The thing with Spain is that, since the transition, all of its territories are technically "autonomous" (they are called Autonomous Communities). Canaries aren't special in that regard.
In fact, one could argue there are territories inside the peninsula that have more autonomy, like the Basque Autonomous Community and Navarre.
Fun fact: The Azores are the only place in Europe (along with Georgia) where tea can be harvested in its natural environment.
So you're telling me, the British didn't have to colonize India and coerce China to get tea, and that they could've just gotten it from their ally, Portugal?
The azores are im africa
If you count tectonic plates as where the ilands are then the Azores are actualy in Europe, Africa and America
Im pretty sure most of the usual tea plants, such as mint or nettle grow naturaly in europe
@@ZBisson The Azores are in the middle of the bloody Atlantic Ocean, what do you mean they're "in africa"?
I'm from the Canary Islands, and I'm very happy that you made this video 🇮🇨
I Went To Fuerteventura Last Year. The Pools Beach And Castle Seemed Cool...
@@earthball2024 I'm from Tenerife, personally I have never been to Fuerteventura. Still, it is a beautiful island.
I'm glad canary islands has an unargued flag on emojis. IT'S SO GOOD 🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨
Wait, the Canary Islands have a flag emoji?
@@socialistrepublicofvietnam1500 Yep, apparently it is due to us having a special economic status within Spain, so we have our own flag as an emoji (at least from what I've read)
I'm glad you mentioned the Guanches - they get left out of Canarian history so often
yeah weird to think about. There arent any guanches left are there?
@@jasondaveries9716The Spanish killed/expelled them all, similar to what they did to mainland Moors.
Thought it was a belated April Fools joke, instead learned that all those islands off of West Africa actually have a name
He made alredy one video. About the 420 years war

Was hoping to see Portugal's extended EEZ claims too, but otherwise great video!
Portugal mentioned !!
Azores mentioned !!
@@eduardog3000, Brazil ment... oh, nevermind...
Love that you made a video of my homeislands ❤
Quick note, I know they were tiny and we barely have any records before the conquest, but there exist data on the states of the Canary Islands (depends on the island) before the invasion.
The kings in Gran Canaria were called Guanartemes, who ruled over Guanartematos and ther existed two on the island, Telde and Galdar.
The mapping video I didn´t know I needed
The autonomy of Canarias was way before 2015. At least from 1982
Fun hypothesis: There is some archeological evidence of carthaginians setting foot on the Azores
Btw, its ilhas selvagens (selvagens/wild islands)
499K subs, I wonder what the 500K sub special will be
Well made video!
Cape Verde ❤
Sounds more like a video for April 1st.
I thought macaronesia had something to do with macaroni
335 years war is better tho
I'm surprised there wasn't more shenanigans in the Canary Islands during the Spanish Civil War.
Next, the history if spaghettinesia😅
it's not an April Fools joke, its literally in West Africa
video about corsica, sardinia and sicily would actually be pretty interesting
You should make one about the sudanese civil war
Macaronesia never recovered from the effects of colonialism under the Spaghettian Empire.
Why did only Fogo in Cape Verde support António of Crato?
Unreal that ive never heard of the macaroni islands
Why did you made the canary islands autonomous much after they started the autonomous community?
Cabo Verde mentioned!!🥳🥳🥳🇨🇻🇨🇻🇨🇻🇨🇻🇨🇻
I approve this
Azores mentioned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm from Spain and I had never even heard of the word "Macaronesia" until now, to the point I thought this was a late Aprils' Fools joke and you were making up the land of Macarons. Smh.
DAMN ITS NOT APRIL FOOL
Interesting name
Now one is missing from Micronesia and Polynesia. 👀
Yes, macaronesia, my favourite country
This is why I don't get why Portugal is considered the first colonial empire after seizing Ceuta in 1415, when Spain (Castile) had started annexing the Canary Islands since about 1405? (Around 1402 in this video)
Did a little looksies since this also sprung my curiosity
And I'd say it's because the initial conquest of the Canaries wasn't an organized effort by Castille, but rather a conquest enacted by the vassal lords of the realm by their own merit, for their own personal reasons and gains.
Only later into the end of the 15th century did Castille take direct action into finishing the conquest of the Canaries
Meanwhile Portugal had a direct action in the conquest of Ceuta with a plan to start a ploy to dominate local trade, as Ceuta was a key trading city in the region (altough the Moroccans shrewdly redirected all and any trade importance to Tangiers later on...)
So the differentiator would be reasoning for conquest.
In Ceuta, Portugal wanted to start a trading empire. In the Canaries, it was conquests from vassal lords seeking further lands for themselves, and not an effort by the Crown.
No way! Not only are the atlantic islands gorgeous, they’re also macaroni?!!
Sign me up!!
When I saw the title was mistake of Micronesia
I really thought you were just misspelling Micronesia lol
There also exists a Macronesia in the pacific
Macaroni Pasta

Wasnt there originally berber tribes ?
Only in Canary Islands, they were called the Guanches.
The other archipelagos were desert, although in the case of cape Verde islands they were visited by Berbers and Senegalese fishermen but there were no water sources so no one settled there before the Portuguese in 1460
And called em Macaroni
Macaronesia
Macaronesian Empire

Canta, irmão
Canta meu irmão
Que a Liberdade é hino
E o Homem a certeza.
Com dignidade, enterra a semente
no pó da ilha nua
No despenhadeiro da vida
A esperança é
Do tamanho do mar
Que nos abraça
Sentinela de mares e ventos
Perseverante
Entre estrelas
E o Atlântico
Entoa o cântico da Liberdade
Canta, irmão
canta meu irmão
Que a Liberdade é hino
E o Homem a certeza.
Do vale à montanha e do mar à serra,
Madeira teu nome continua
Em teus filhos saudosos
Que além fronteiras
De ti se mostram orgulhosos.
Por esse Mundo além,
Madeira, honraremos tua História
Na senda do trabalho
Nós lutaremos
Alcançaremos
Teu bem-estar e glória.
Soy la sombra de un almendro,
Soy volcán, salitre y lava.
Repartido en ocho peñas
Late el pulso de mi alma.
Soy la historia y el futuro,
Corazón que alumbra el alba
De unas islas que amanecen
Navegando la esperanza.
Luchadoras en nobleza
Bregan el terrero limpio
De la libertad...
Esta es la tierra amada:
Mis Islas Canarias.
Como un solo ser
Juntas soñarán
Un rumor de paz
Sobre el ancho mar.
Deram frutos a fé e a firmeza
no esplendor de um cântico novo:
os Açores são a nossa certeza
de traçar a glória de um povo.
Para a frente! Em comunhão,
pela nossa autonomia.
Liberdade, justiça e razão
estão acesas no alto clarão
da bandeira que nos guia.
Para a frente! Lutar, batalhar
pelo passado imortal.
No futuro a luz semear,
de um povo triunfal.
De um destino com brio alcançado
colheremos mais frutos e flores;
porque é esse o sentido sagrado
das estrelas que coroam os Açores.
Para a frente, Açorianos!
Pela paz à terra unida.
Largos voos, com ardor, firmamos,
para que mais floresçam os ramos
da vitória merecida.
Para a frente! Lutar, batalhar
pelo passado imortal.
No futuro a luz semear,
de um povo triunfal.
Kinda wish Cabo Verde got a colour
a deep blue like their flag would of been nice
Underrated region!
The name Macaronesia makes me hungry

Not Macaron it’s pasta, don’t forget about it, you’re hurting the feelings of Italians))
can someone tell me why some moroccans claim these islands if they've never been under moroccans control? do they have some random text from 300 BC claiming they controlled it or something?
The islands are simply close to Africa, that is the only justification on the part of the Moroccans.
@@GeneralFr is that really it?
so expansionist moroccans believe that geography(in the limited cases where morocco gains land than they loose) and historical "control" is what should determine the legitimate ownership of a territory?
@@firecreeper2249morroco doesnt actually claim it, its just morrocan nationalists who claim that they control extremely the canary islands, but the morrocans dont want it because it's nor in controlled waters.the nationalists which they break the ummah cuz they're nationalists and thats against islam... Thank goodness it was not the Arab colonists who spread the Islamic death cult.
Cute fumo
It actually wasn’t too bad. The guanche actually peacefully integrated into Spain. They never resisted
Yes because the Roman, and literally every other empire didn't exist before the 1400s smh
Besides the Canaries, literaly all those islands were uninhabited before the arrival of Europeans.
Cabo Verde having become independent doesn't make all that much sense after all.
THIS GOES HARD
