Different methods and approaches can give various results, but the best one, I think, is the Berlitz Method that is still the most effective way to learn a language and continues to be used today.
Unfortunately, in many countries around the world is still use old-style methods. What we need to do to get better results is to approach a new language in a natural fashion. Because this experience allows us to overcome any inhibitions about speaking and apply our new skills in everyday situations.
I think this course is important for English teacher candidates. I will listen the video again to be able to understand better, and at the same time I liked your video. The book which you make us of it look quality. Thanks for everything.
As someone who has never researched the history of language teaching, I have quite well grasped the information you tell, and I wish the video was a little longer. I'm looking forward to the other parts sir
You can make sure that I had no idea about this lesson until I ran across with your video. I also have a friend from Massachusetts. He speaks very fast like you, but we also need to hear people who are speaking fast to get better ourselves in English. :)
For the answers, I prefer the Berlitz Method, because like you said, there are so many principles that are still being used in this method. Also, the more the students participate in the lesson, the more they will benefit from the lesson. The grammar -translation and Berlitz method are the methods that still being used (partly) in some ways in the current education system.
I agree with you. Here in Korea, the Grammar Translation Method is still widely used...But not by me!!! I only speak English to my students and I only let my Korean tutor speak to me in Korean. :)
I really ike your voice and intonation in that video. Furthermore, while you were telling the approaches and methods, it was very effective and logical to give the explanation of some words or abbreviations beacuse it prevented me from leaving the video. Thank you for your effort. Keep going like that! Cheers.
The methods used today can change person to person or class to class. Bu in general, it is possible to make an inference. The direct method and the Berlitz Methods are commonly used in language learning classrooms.
I think it's a good way for us to process the course from the slide. Because we're not native speakers, there may be words we don't necessarily know or words we don't know how to read, so it's good for us to see what's written.
I had the opportunity to examine the book you showed at the beginning of the video as pdf on the internet. Based on my review, I can say that you have successfully explained a difficult and confusing subject with your explanatory speech and concise notes. Moreover, the various questions at the end of the video encouraged me to think, and it was really beneficial. It would be better if your gestures were a bit effective, but that's okay for me. Thank you for your efforts. Great video.
Thank you for the feedback. I want to keep my videos simple so it's not too time-consuming to make them. I make them for myself to improve my ELT knowledge and for others who are interested too. My videos will get better slowly but surely. Cheers.
In Korea, most of my university students enter my classroom with a focus on grammar and perfection. They are very quiet at the beginning of the semester, but I can't get them to stop talking by the end. My method is closest to Berlitz, with the goal of students talking 80% of the time (we gradually build to it), but I also incorporate Task-based learning and the Natural Approach, so I have a blended approach, taking what I like from each method. How about you?
Thanks for the comment. That sounds great, Trey. I also taught in Korea, for about 12 years, and had a similar experience. I eventually developed my Endless English Talking Time method (EETT), which turned my students from robots with no conversation skills into real conversationalists, regardless of level or ability, who could talk, well, endlessly! :)
Cool! I've been in Korea for almost 14 years. Where are you now if you don't mind me asking? EETT sounds fantastic! Would love to learn more about it @@language-n-learning.

Also, the video was very informative for me since it is my first time to take that lesson. They were totally new to me. I am looking forward to seeing other effective other videos like that.
Hi, Ronal. Thanks for the question. Briefly, Anthony was the first to define a method: Approach (curriculum) + Method (syllabus) + Technique (lesson plan). According to him this is hierarchical. R & R redefined and clarified the definition: a method = an approach, your design, and your procedure. It's not hierarchical. You can start anywhere and build your method. You approach includes your theories of language and learning. Your design includes your objectives, syllabus, activities, and roles for the learners, teacher, and materials. Your procedure is how you do everything during the lesson. I hope that helps. Cheers. :)

1-Direct Method was kind of a big shift in previously employed language teaching principles. It made language learning for communicative reasons possible and most importantly that shift resulted in the establishment of IPA. GTM has also contributed to the language teaching development as the idea of translation and deductive grammar teaching is still in use for various reasons. 2- Both methods are still present in some parts of the world, for example, as far as I know in Eu schools Latin is still taught through GTM as it is not a spoken language. In some countries English is taught this way as well. For Direct or USA version ''Berlitz'' Method, Berlitz school are still active in many parts of the worlds and they are still using the same basic principles. However, there is a problem with the Direct Method that its hard to find eligible teachers as they must be native or native-like in the target language also, they should be skilled enough to not rely on the textbooks and course materials because they have to prepare their own lesson plans. So it's not that widespread as it was hoped to be. 3- Out of 2 my preference depends on the needs of the student. Still , nowadays as the language needs are mostly towards oral proficiency I would prefer Direct Method. Cool vid ! I enjoyed the questions at the end
Hi, Ömer. Thank you for your detailed reply. I really appreciate it. I hope you will check out my video on chapter 2, which is about approaches and methods. I'm working on chapter 3, which is about the Oral Approach, which is systematic in nature, as opposed to the Direct Method, which is random in terms of the content. Cheers!
If I needed to choose one of them, I would prefer the Berlitz Method certainly as both a university student and a foreign language teacher candidate. It gives an opportunity that learners can learn by using itself practically. It is significant for learners. Also, showing and demonstrations are more effective way than explanations. People generally learn and memorize things showed compare to things said. Additionally, learning and teaching are processes. They need proper and suitable plans to prevent and distraction. And being patient is indispensable for the results of any process.
Firstly, I sincerely appreciate your contributions thay you provide us. It was so informative and understandable video. Everything was clear. However, there could be some visual materials and examples. For the questions, the grammar-translation and Berlitz methods are still used in current education system. When it comes to choice, It would be 'Berlitz Method' because it is very effective way to think creatively and it also encourages us to express our own ideas easily. For me, This method is more useful. Thank you over and over again, I am waiting for more videos.
Thank you so much for sharing useful information. Could you please explain the differences between teaching method and approaches? Some people called communicative language teaching approach and other communicative language teaching method. Secondly, could you please list some innovative teaching approaches and methods? Cheers.
Thank you so much for your comment and encouragement, Pervaiz! I'm almost done with the video on the next chapter of the book, which should answer some of your questions. Cheers! :)
Hello sir, I want to answer the questions at the end of the video. I think the English teaching method used nowadays is "The Direct Method" but in my opinion, "The Berlitz Method" can be much more useful in English teaching. That's why I prefer "The Berlitz Method".
Thanks for the answer. Do ELT teachers in Turkey use the Direct Method? That's great. Here in Korea, unfortunately, they still rely heavily on Grammar Translation.
I think every method had inspired from each other, and developed their principles according to the previous ones, because of that every method helped affecting the language learning and teaching in a good way.
I would like to answer the third question at the end of the video. It seems to me that there is no particular method for language teaching. Each method has its own importance and own benefits. Therefore, I would prefer the combination of different methods.
I think that you should not only read on the slide but also explain the topic more. You can show some visuals to the students. But I loved your channel I'll follow you
I appreciate the efforts you give for the video, In my opinion you can give more comments about the content of your slide. I saw that you did in some moments ,but increasing the commenting phase would be really nice for the efficiency of your work. Anyways nice video :)
I would probably prefer Berlitz Method which is still used today because it gives learners some opportunity like joining the class effectively and teachers and students can listen each other without communication disorder. It is very important I think. If you do not take care students' feelings and opinions, it will harm that bilateral relations.
As ELT students, because foreign language teaching requires more patience, we are waiting to learn the methods we can use effectively in another class.
I so appreciated for your efforts and the useful video, teacher. It was pretty beneficial video for understanding the methods that used to teaching language:)
When considered on a single method, learning styles that other skills are lacking like speaking or listening are insufficient. According to my way of thinking, 4 basic skills should be included in one method. Like Henry Sweets' method.
To answer the question in the end of the video , In my opinion the briltz method is more effective . Making students include in class is beneficial choice .

I am not too bored during video perid. I also like your tone. As for the content of the video, I would like to say that some methods are similar to those of today. Of course, that's my opinion. As a teacher candidate, I liked the Berlitzs method the most. Because it is an effective method that is always wanted to be applied but can not be applied anytime. 🤭😂
I'm glad you liked the video. Thank you for your kind words! Are you part of the group of Turkish university ELT students? There are so many of you! That's great. I'm happy all of you have found my channel! :)
I think the topics can be more catchy if you explain the subject in an improvised way instead of reading the sentences in the presentation while you are explaining the topics. Thank you very much for the video and your effort.
Thanks sir, it was a good presentation but, if you explained the topic in more details ,or gave some examples that related to the subject by using some materials, ıt would be better and more effectual.
I think you use your body language effectively despite your current possibilities. I believe you Will make a more effective presentation in a better quality and environment..
In my opinion, all of these methods should be used a little bit. Because every student has a different way of learning and if the teacher uses only one method, it may not appeal to everyone. Therefore, teachers must be competent enough to use different methods effectively.
Thank you, Merve. I agree. Methods can vary from teacher to teacher, course to course, lesson to lesson, activity to activity and student to student. Teaching isn't easy, but it's a fun, creative process! Cheers.
When it comes to the effects of these methods and approaches on language learning and teaching, it can be observed that the effects and the results are parallel. As the methods and approaches have been developed and modernized, language teaching and learning have become more modern, practical and rational. For example; first method, the Latin Teaching Method, supports that grammar and translation are essentials of these processes. However, these are just supply theoretical sides of the processes. It cannot be find any practical implications in terms of real communication and interaction which are basis of the language. If new and modern methods are analyzed, it can be observed that they are more practical than old fashioned methods and approaches. Of course, old ones comprised a basis and they were also first steps. But it cannot be denied that today’s people need more practical and effective ones. Especially, the Berlitz Method gives them an opportunity to learn and teach language by using itself.
I think the use of method depends on the situation of the learners but actually, I prefer the Berlitz Method that is clear, understandable, and simple.
Sir, I have an advice for you as a viewer. If you place your camera a little higher and closer to your face while shooting the video, we can see your gestures and mouth movements while pronouncing. It would be much better for us.
I know I talk fast. I can slow down a little, but, as you can see from the Berlitz method, teachers should speak naturally. :) Plus, I provided the text in the slides to make it easier for non-native speakers to understand me.
It was very informative video but it would be better if you could mention the important points instead of the entite page. But still thank you for your efforts.
I'm so happy you liked the video. Maybe I was a little nervous and, as a result, spoke extra fast. :) But, honestly, I'm from Massachusetts, USA. People from there speak really fast!
Okay. Thanks. Making videos takes a lot of time. I'd rather spend my time preparing good content than making flashy videos. Plus, I'm not only making videos for my audience but also for myself so that I can learn by teaching. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers.
You read slides a little quickly, but I'm entitled to it because you don't have students to talk to and communicate with, so you read slides a little fast. But it would be nice if you'd at least give us a few seconds to understand and digest what you're saying on the slide.
Thank you for the feedback. Yes, I often talk very fast. I'm from the northeastern US, and people from there talk very fast. I have to try really hard to talk slowly.
Thank you for the feedback. BTW, do all of you (Burak, Berika, Ceyda & Nuran) know each other? You all posted numerous comments at the same time, which is great. Are you from Turkey?
Cheers!
@@language-n-learning Sure, I'm planning to watch the videos as I progress in the book. Videos are more like a summary for what I read.
The Berlitz Method seems to be quite popular with this group of Turkish teacher candidates! Yes, I like it too. :)

Hello sir, I want to answer the questions at the end of the video. I think the English teaching method used nowadays is "The Direct Method" but in my opinion, "The Berlitz Method" can be much more useful in English teaching. That's why I prefer "The Berlitz Method".

Great summary. Thanks!!!
