  • How often do you want to draw a figure or anything from imagination but you just don’t know how to get started?
In this video I’ll share how this Glenn Vilppu drawing method helps me draw anything from imagination or observation.
Glenn Vilppu is a living master and his drawing method has helped me, and thousands of other successful artists, learn to draw anything.
This is a demonstration of his simple, and genius “spherical forms” method, which will make it super easy to get started with a figure drawing or a drawing from imagination.
In this drawing tutorial I first demonstrate how to practice this method by working from reference images and then show you how to take this method and use it to invent anything from imagination.
I highly recommend you invest in Glenn Vilppu’s book called Drawing Manual: www.artsupplywarehouse.com/pr... (this is NOT an affiliate link, I simply believe in promoting other quality instructors and their work!)
In this figure drawing tutorial I’m working from images by Karolina Grabowska, Cottonbro Studio and Jennifer-Enujiugha.
Materials I use in this video: 4B Wollf's Carbon Pencil on smooth Newsprint,

I will actualy implement this into combined organic form + figure drawing practice! I love how you construct organic forms with rithm lines as some sort of shiloueth and conture, it makes forms so much more alive and belivable, your explanations just clicked with me, you are like cool art teacher I never had, thank you!

For anyone watching I would want you to pay closer attention to how much character miss Carolin's ovals actually have. They're never "just round" they always have some twist or direction that informs you, as a viewer, about something (direction, squash, stretch, twist, pull etc.). Try to keep that in mind to not end up with a snowman effect (It goes directly against dynamism!)
Amazing summary for Vilppu with an amazing twist of your own as well! I enjoyed watching this a lot. Too bad I've given up on myself...

What a wonderfully observant and kind comment! I hope that one day you'll allow yourself to continue your love for drawing even if you don't live up to your inner expectations.(if I understood your last sentence there correctly) You're worthy of doing what you love even if you suck at it. (And my apologies if I misread/misunderstood your comment 🤗)

Glenn Vilppu is a really great teacher, learned a lot from him especially when it comes to removing stiffness in figure drawing.

I bought the Vilppu Drawing Manual because it was recommended to me from the Host of the Sketch Club I just joined and I really struggle to overcome page 9-11 because I have problems with the guide to follow the flow and attitude and representation of movement as I really have to resist to follow the shapes I see on the model!
It was really interesting to see how you apply the round shapes on the more complex models on the next pages, I think this can help, Thanks!

This is just brilliant. I found Vilppu's methodology from other sources yet it was a little confusing, at least for me, the transition from linear gesture to form. I really appreciate this lesson, thanks a lot. BTW I love your hands and how gracefully they move while you draw :D keep the great content coming!

Oh, absolutely. You can use this even for non human subject matter. You will straighten out your shapes in the next phase of the drawing and make them more specific. With drawing you always want to go from general to specific 😀

I see lots of merit with the circles/sphere approach, but as a novice it really throws a monkey wrentch into the Bridgman squares/blocks approach I'm just now learning? I'm now confused. Is one apprach preferable over the other?

    • @CarolinPeters
      @CarolinPeters  6 месяцев назад

Hey there, what a great question! Yes, in the beginning it can be so confusing when you hear one person explain one method and then another one suggests something completely different. What I want you to take with you is this: these are different methods, different approaches, to the same challenge of getting your drawings started. One isn't necessarily better than the other, they are simply different. Think about how in sports one coach will have you practice your skillset with one set of exercises and another coach prefers a different set of exercises. I recommend you research the results each coach gets and if their results seem like they'd get you to the fulfillment of your ultimate drawing goals. If drawing from imagination is the ultimate goal, Bridgeman and Vilppu are both fantastic jumping off points, if classical value rendering like the French and Russian academy artists show in their work you might want to go with a coach who focuses on tonal drawing. The good news is that many roads lead to Rome. If you want a bit more guidance consider watching my free masterclass: draw.clickfunnels.com/seperate-webinar-opt-in-page1666717801595

Vilppu started off with gesture. End with solidified gesture,.....no construction in between..
