  • Often when we want to use imported parts in FreeCAD our rotation / transformation point will not be in the correct location. In this video we show a number of quick ways to fix that problems. This would be the same for any file type you import into FreeCAD whether it be STL, STEP, OBJ etc.

    Awesome! I asked abut this on FreeCAD forum and got simple response: NOT POSSIBLE.
    I would expect that FreeCAD has option for use to simply select any point on part and declare it as point of origin.
    But this is good enough workaround. Thanks!

    Thank you for making this video and sharing a simple solution to a common issue regarding the origin of parts. I learned something new today! 🙏😃

    Thanks, this is useful to know. Though I wish these 'tricks' were not needed and we could just move the transform point of origin (right click and drag for example).

    Visual alignment to axis cross is not good enough. There should be a way to snap axis cross on at least a corner or ideally, the center of a circle. This is the hard part.

    Awesome Video, "The Basics" definitely worthy of more like it... Thanks Again for the knowledge drop. 😄👌

    Can freecad perform the same function as openscad's hull operator? I'd really like to see a video on how to achieve similar results in freecad.

    Positioning a part to the 'about right' position is not helpfull at all. How does one go about setting a part's origin with precision (eg the center of a circular feature, or mid/end point of an edge, or whatever)?

    • @robgoodsight6216
      @robgoodsight6216 Год назад +1

      Good question!
      If you have the possibility then in the "combo" view you have the possibility to move in every axis the part selected and even have a decimal movement.
      The transform is for quick movement, the positioning is for the more precise movement.
      At least I do that.

      How does one use that WB for exact positioning?

    Hi! I created a box that I want to rotate to export on stl or step. The thing is, if I use transform it looks right but on the exported file it is in the original possition. How can I fix it?

    This is really helpful! Is there also a way to more precisely position parts rather than just drag them with the mouse until it "looks about right"?
    In tinkering with 3D Printers, I often have the case that I would like to take a part from a complex assembly, modify it, and then use it in another assembly. I found correctly positioning the parts to be one of the biggest headaches of that process. Being able to move an object's origin to the precise center of some feature would help me so much, but I haven't yet found a way to do it.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  10 месяцев назад

      Funny you should say that. I have just created a video that I am editing that covers that. Not with assemblies but with sketches. You need to use the draft wb move and rotate tools along with the snapping. You will need to set something called the working plane when rotating but worth the move you select the object hit move and you can snap it to other shapes and geometry.

    I noticed that you rotate the view of the part in this video (approx 1:18 minutes in) just by changing the position of your mouse cursor. I have not discovered how to set up FreeCAD to enable me to do this. Can you point me in the right direction please?

    I have a problem. I’m trying to polar 26 small spheres around the outside of a ring but it shows them in red and does not transform.
    Any ideas?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Год назад

      Is the face your polar arraying your feature on creating multiple bodies? I. e the red feature from the failed array sits out in space rather than on a solid part of your object? If you experiment and create a single rectangle pad centered around the sketch point of origin where the axis cross and then pad. Create a small circle sketch attached to top face and pad that. When you polar array this feature it will work fine. But if you have the rectangle sketch not centered then you rub the risk of the polar array rotating around the point of orgin but not having a solid underneath.

    Thanks for share! How did you make this angle on the cylinder?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Год назад

      No problems, the angle was from a reverse pocket. I go throug that in my understanding freecad series which was before the learning freecad one, I think it's quite early around 5 or 6. If you check my play lists you will see the series there.

      I found the video that makes the pocket, but I still have a problem, I'm making a exhaust tip and I can't create a thikness between two tubes because of a chamfer.
