The rhythm surges like a heartbeat between the bass and guitar as the blood flows through the orchestra. Sounds very, very nice!

Just found this now, and I am so chuffed! this is one of my favourite pieces by the band, and it must have been one of Artie's too, because as well as this film, he recorded it twice.
I love the way the melody line never quite resolves itself, so creating a dark sense of tension which lingers all the way through.

The first Shaw big band during their 1938-39 period with Buddy Rich, Johnny Best etc. Great tune. Sophisticated classy arrangement showcasing that very talented disciplined reed section. Most people know Artie Shaw as being a great clarinet player, which he was, but what most people don't know is that he was considered the best lead alto sax player in the business.

The trumpet soloist is Bernie Privin, by the way. Johnny Best would go on to be a stalwart of Glenn Miller's band, and return to Shaw's, and later Sam Donahue's, Navy Band as its main trumpet soloist, while Privin would assume the same role in Miller's Air Force band.

Artie was a very good alto sax player. He gave my Dad (Les Robinson) several tips when Les was the lead alto for Artie's band ('38-40) for the Begin the Beguine band.

Bravo! I just started to learn this one to sing and accompany myself on guitar. It is elusive, but Artie and the band have such a clear, solid grasp of the vaguely Eastern melody, that I am going to model my version on this arrangement.

@@SwingMan1938 Agreed, I appreciate the work and have an idea what goes into it. I've just been restoring Artie's 'Moonray' from a disc that was pretty good to start with. It brings out the subtleties, leading to further appreciation of these counterpoint arrangements. And at some point I stopped and went "hey there's a piano in there". Thanks, will check out more of your stuff.

The driving force behind my starting to collect 78s in earnest over 33 years ago was all the crap re-issues that I'd been subjected to up to that point. I wanted to hear the genuine article with their original balance and full dynamics - especially all of the direct-to-disc recordings from the 1920's through the early 1940's. Hearing just how much body an acoustic guitar fills out the rhythm section and the delicate accents throughout that were put underwater by those aforementioned crap re-issues in the name of "noise reduction". Balderdash - that was straight-up **music** reduction.

There are parts of the trumpet solo from 2:57-3:12 that sound very much like parts of the bridge of John Coltrane's "Lazybird", which came out on "Blue Trane" 19 years after this Artie Shaw recording. I wonder if Coltrane got his inspiration from this piece. Unlikely, I suppose, but one can never rule these things out.
