As a parent we must support our children even if they make mistakes, it doesn't matter that's how they will learn but we must support them in their decision as Allah has given them the right. As I did so Alhamdulliah the children are happy.

Sucks coming from a patriarchal community. My family adapted all Muslim traditions, except this one. Somehow the men in my family still justify this and call it ‘halal’ even though it’s clearly haram to get dowry from the brides family! My mom’s family literally went broke due to the amount of dowry my father side demanded.
What kind of a disgusting ritual is this. I always get infuriated whenever I hear ridiculous stories like this. And I'm not trying to be racist, but India always has the most infuriating stories. 😭

The mahr is an interesting topic. Women absolutely have a right to it. Some scholars stated it is money to take care of her in case of a divorce. Others stated it’s just a gift. The issue we run into in the west where women ask for bombastic mahr because of “Sharia” then in a divorce , go to kufr laws getting alimony/spousal support and the assets of the man.
