- Ladder only runewords, by default, are not able to be used in Single Player in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.

Here is a tutorial on how to make this happen without using PlugY.

I advise to close out of any Diablo II client completely before doing this.
1) Download this file: drive.google.com/file/d/1beQ_...
2.) Place the Rune.txt file in your Diablo II Folder under "Diablo II\data\global\excel" Please note, these folders may need to be created!
EDIT: 11/5/2016 - *If you are still having issues with this, sometimes removing the .txt from Runes.txt fixes it because it hides known file types. It would look like Runes.txt.txt with file types shown
3.) Right click on your Diablo 2 shortcut → properties → Add "-direct -txt" in the target line after "...\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe"
4.) Test runewords!

This is being tested on a Windows 7 64bit computer, it should also work fine on Windows 10 as well. Latest patch 1.14D.

***MAC RESPONSE**
Copied from previous response of John Hammer: It will work on a Mac but you will need to use the Terminal to launch the game rather than double-clicking in the Finder or clicking on the alias in the Dock. Find the Diablo II application icon in the Finder (it should be inside a folder called Diablo II). It is not actually an application but a "package". Right-click on the Diablo II application package and choose SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS. You will then see a folder called CONTENTS, click on that and you will see nested folders one of which is called MacOS; click on MacOS. In there you will see the actual Diablo II executable application. Now open a Terminal window. Drag the Diablo II executable application to the Terminal prompt. Doing so will put in the correct path to the application so you don't have to try to type it yourself. You can then add any arguments after that, such as -direct -txt or perhaps -act5 (which starts new single-player characters at Level 33) or ALMOST anything else that works on Windows. Remember that you also need that text file placed in the proper location in order to get this Ladder-Only Runewords fix to work. You can use an Automator Script if you want to launch the game this way frequently (pretty much the same as a Windows shortcut) but it's better to do it only when you want to create ladder-only runewords.

I love you Alara. I had found this solution before but now I am reinstalling it and needed a refresher; this is precisely what I was looking for.
Started to play old D2 Solo with D2bs and making a spirit and insight gave me a gemmed item. Luckily i remembered some youtube video that helped me with that problem. I am so thankful that yor video is still up, as soon as i played it and heard your voice i knew i hit the jackpot. Many Thanks!!! Thank god I found this before figuring out the hard way that ladder only RWs still don't work on single player. Saved myself some runes there. I was looking up what runes I need for some RWs like Spirit & Insight, cuz I cannot be bothered to remember those off the top of my head.
Awesome, works perfectly. Since I'm a bit scared of messing with game files because I sometimes play online, I can confirm that if you do the thing said in this video, then enter SP and make your runewords, you can then undo everything (deleting/whatever) to these files/folders you created and remove the -direct -txt part from your launcher and you still get those runewords to work. In that case, if you go in MP you don't have a single different file from the original thing, but you still can use Ladder Runewords in SP! :D
YOU ARE A LIFESAVER. I really do wanna make those ladder-ONLY runewords but I don't play ladder and never will. I enjoy playing LoD as a single player so this info just woke the hell up on me. Just made LW Phase blade. So cool. Hope that you have future info about LoD on single players that you might share in the future. Thanks.
To those of you who have difficulty in finding the folder, just make it on the main folder of diablo 2, as said on the instructions. It worked well on mine so hopefully it works on yours. GLHF.

Geeeez! I just played D2LOD again. Haven't tried this on solo before and now it works! Too bad already did atleast 2 Insights runewords and sold them cause I thought it wasn't working. Thanks a lot!
My experience getting this to work was contrary to the below post telling you to follow the registry string. It was actually my program files x86 folder that was the hold up - and it was the runes.txt.txt issue. Rename the file to remove the extra extension (newer versions of windows typically hide the extensions and automatically assign them.)

Nice! I'm three+ years late to the party, but Alara Shade gets my vote! Unlike some big name streamers, that cannot be bothered too (or do a really poor job) explain things, the two videos I have so far watched of Alara's present the information in clear form, without being rushed. I now realize that I can have the ladder only Runewords in my single player games. This very well done video showed me how easy it is to install this stuff, and now I can start to enjoy all those heretofore unobtainable formulas.

The other video I watched and enjoyed was the GoMule one. I should probably mention that I am an old guy, and play D2 in my own home network games. I currently have 5 working computers up and running on my home network, and so do all of my mule activities within the framework of TCP/IP games. Once I get the three other D2 machines back up and running, I'll once again be able to play 8 player games on my home network. So I'm not as sold on using a third party program for my Muling needs, but the functionality and install process was well and clearly explained.

I've tried everything and I can't seem to get it to work at all. I created the folders, put the runes.txt file in the last excel one taken off the hidden extensions, made a new and second sort cut twice and have the -direct -txt in the properties. is there anything else that I might be missing?

Will this work if I'm using ATMA as a mule... I think it moves your D2 file locations around a little. As long as i replace the rune.txt it should be fine, right?

Hey Alara Shade, a couple of us do no have the save location, I cannot find the excel/global file. Our diablo 2 is not saved in the 86 programs file like everyone else. Can you let us know how to locate or a work around for this?
I figured out my problem. I did everything you said and it wouldn't work. I finally tried deleting and re creating the shortcut i was using for Diablo 2. Then altered the shortcut like you showed. Bingo! so nice. Thank you

Alara Shade, do you know how to enable ladder only runewords in single player on a mac? I very recently returned to Diablo 2, and I have the newest version 1.14d. However, I don't know how to enable ladder only runewords on my macbook. (Also, do you know if there is a way to make it possible to do the uber and pandemonium events?) Thank you!

Thx for the Info. A little tip if things dont work under Win 10 try space button when adding the -direct-txt. In my Case i had put it directly behind the exe" ending and it didnt work. After a space between exe" -direct-txt it worked. Windows is very case sensitiv it seems ;-).

I dont know why but firstly runewords not work right when i made them but after few days the stats apear. Now they are work but there is a problem with variabile stats range . For exemple i reroled a prudence Eth sacred armor for about 10 times and the ed was between 140-150 when the runeword has a chance to get 140 to 170 ed . Same with doom eth ca.maybe i must try more.

Worked. Two things that messed me up first time. 1) capital letter for folders. 2) the -direct -txt comes after -w if doing windowed
My first attempt at this failed, then I read your comment, and have now renamed the Runes.txt file to runes.txt and will now test this out. Posted Aug 17th, 2019.
I can now confirm that the changing of the file name from Runes to runes does indeed work, and that I am now able to own Edge in single player games. Thanks to @Aman Patel for the heads up on using lower case in the file name, and thanks @Alara Shade for this informational video! Posted 8-17-19.

Make a separate shortcut without the launch parameters.
yup it worked.. to those not working try going to startup and find folder options then uncheck "hide extensions for known type" then check your rune.txt.. mine shows rune.txt.txt and just erase .txt so it will be rune.txt.. this is how it worked for me

For some reason the shortcut step is where I can't do this. Every time I try it just comes up with an error box that says: 'The name "D:\Games\Diablo II\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe"-direct' specified in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct. Any idea what's wrong?
Make sure there is a space after .exe" and -direct.
Mine still isn't working :( do I have to rename Runes or should it automatically be Runes.txt ?? I also feel like I've done the folders wrong
Make sure that the rune file isn't "rune.txt.txt" sometimes hidden file extensions are off and there is an extra '.txt' which makes it not work. Double check your folders. Still not working? Make a back up of all your characters, uninstall and start from square one.

tried capitalizing "R" in runes.txt but no luck, tried respelling it to "rune" instead of runes, did not work too
Make sure you are running in admin mode, you may to give permissions in the folders. you may need to do a clean uninstall/reinstall.

So just to clarify, there is a space after the quote mark after exe between the first hyphen? Also a space between direct and the next hyphen? Also no quotes around -direct -txt correct? Sorry for so many questions just wasted runes on an insight and realized i didnt have rwm set up and doing it now

@@AlaraShadeTV So i definitely had it typed in correctly, but made another unsuccessful insight...the only issue i can think is that when i placed the Runes doc it's not in the correct location. When I pull up diablo 2 under my program files it is not giving me access to a "data" folder, in fact there are no other folders to continue to, just other docs which is what i placed the runes doc in. Any other advice? At this point I might need to download RWM if that still works

Ok so I went to the diablo 2 folder under program files and simply created a new folder called “data” and then a folder in that called “global” and then a folder in that called “excel” and moved the Runes.txt doc to that, hopefully my 4th insight won’t be a bust 😓

To those having difficulty finding the correct destination folder to copy the "Rune.txt" file, here is what worked for me.
If you have moved the diablo II folder or installed it from an usb key, your installation path might be wrong. The correct place to create the "\data\global\excel" folders, on Windows, is in the folder refered by the key : "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II"
To find this key you have to look in the regestery :
hit the windows button -> type "run" -> hit enter -> start the run application -> type "regedit" -> hit "OK"
In the Registery Editor : expand the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder -> expand "SOFTWARE" -> "Blizzard Entertainment" -> "Diablo II"
Find the "*Save Path*" key. This is the location where you need to create the folders "\data\global\excel"
Copying the Runes.txt file there worked for me.
I recommend you backup your character file before trying to create a runework in case you messed up.
Where do i make the folder because when i found that key in reg i dont know how to open it to make the folders?

I found the Save Path - its was C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\Save\
what to do next? i tried to create the folders "\data\global\excel"
all i did was create folders in the save folder and named it "data" - then opened that one and created a new one "global" and so on and draged the Rune.txt in the "excel" folder. only in the last folder "excel".
But it did not work :D
I usually dont do things like this creating my own folders and stuff becouse I'm a pleb in IT things.

you can definitely spend a little time to make ladder items with Hero Editor by the way, I gave up on this method and tried Hero Editor and it works just fine

I know it sounds stupid but when I open my Diablo 2 folder. there is nothing like these maps Diablo II\data\global\excel. i've even put it in the search tool but it doesn't show anything. i never had problems playing this game so these folders should be somewhere. could someone tell me how to find it?

Just create them, literally right click, create new folder, name it "data", then enter it and repeat for global and excel, then copy the txt in the "excel" folder and there you have it if you do that -direct -txt thing on the properties
yo can u assist me? im having an issue with it not working. tried multiple options.
its saving as document named jus "Runes" and then I drag to my d2 folder in c: drive. then I go into d2 properties and add -direct-txt. then ive even ran as admin. cant get it to work.

I cannot get it to work. I accidentally had my D2 open when doing it the first time. After I noticed I closed it and re-did the process. Still didn't work. Then noticed I had the 1.14B version so I updated to 1.14D and re-did the process. Still doesn't work though. Any ideas?

I'm not the best person to answer this, perhaps, but I just use my existing shortcut* by:
1) right clicking on it, then
2) select open file location, then
3) right clicking on the exe file, then
4) select create shortcut, and voila, a second D2 shortcut.
*It should be mentioned that the default shortcut you use probably needs to be renamed to something else, before you do this, but I'm not sure you have to do that, but it makes things far easier to keep track of.

I have a digital version and my first try didn't work. I have created a folder structure in here:
C:\Users\your_profile_name\Saved Games\Diablo II - I read someone said that you need to do that with the digital version.
So it looked like:
C:\Users\your_profile_name\Saved Games\Diablo II\data\global\excel\Runes.txt
After that I have created the folder structure exactly where I've installed the game not where the saves are kept and it worked like a charm:
D:\Games\Diablo II\data\global\excel\Runes.txt
Now excel folder is filled with other *.bin files like you can see on the video.
Other than that double check what was mentioned in the comments already.

Ahh so you most likely had the issue where you don't display file extensions and you ended up with Runes.txt.txt file. Removing the additional .txt from the name gave you the correct file with extension.
I'm using GoMule for more space.

How come this works for some runewords but not all? for example this works for stealth malice and leaf but not Spirit
I had no problem getting this to work with the other runewords. Stealth and Leaf are not ladder only and should work by default. Make sure you are not putting these runes in a blue item as it will not work. Also make sure that your text file was downloaded and not copy and pasted into a new document.
I've tested with the "Edge" bow (cheapest option) and it worked!
However…. I've been trying to create a "Phoenix" (Vex + Vex + Lo + Jah + ANY 4 socket weapon) into a war pike, and it doesn't work.
Anyone knows why?
Have you made any changes to your directories/installation or operating system since your first creation with Edge? Are you socketing into a gray item and not a blue/mechanic item? Double check to make sure your Edge still works on the same character.
@@AlaraShadeTV It seems that the War Pike falls into the category of "Spears" and not "Melee Weapons" and that's why it didn't work. I've tried other runewords and all work fine, even using the 'Perfect Drop Mod'.

I made the folder names and put the rune doc in them but it just isn't working :(
Only other suggestion is to try a reinstall and follow steps again.
It works greatly so far (for the runewords I tried). The at least 200ms ping makes impossible to play ladder. Runewords ok.. now lacking the events :P. Anyway, goodjob ma'am
Ah yes the events. If you do want the events PlugY allows for this but I do not use or have a tutorial on this at all. The other thing about PlugY is that you have to downgrade to version 1.13. It has Uber Tristram (apparently nerfed) and Diablo Clone.
Yeah I used to play Plugy, but i dislike the stats and skill changes enabled that it allows... even not using I dont like it.. haha. For now 1.14d is fine without it, i just hunt items and play with Evolve lan with some friends... I hope someday blizz set a D2 server in Brazil... is it dream too much?

Hello, Alara. But how can u get this Single Playet shortcut?
I just copy my regular Diablo 2 shortcut and rename it so I know the difference between Battle.net. So for the Battle.net Shortcut, when you do right click -- > properties -> You should not have -direct -txt. But in the Single player shortcut you should have those in the target line. Hope this helps.

Bruno Paludo I think if both players have the txt file it should work but I haven't tested this so I'm unsure

The only things that don't work in single player by default are Ladder Only Runewords, Diablo Clone and Uber Tristram. Oh and of course not getting random disconnects from Battle.net :D
