  • The first in our look through the expanded range of Jack Daniel's. We start with the original Tennessee Whiskey stalwart. For as much as its price and reputation put it in the budget whisky category, it achieves some fairly high scores.

I have been waiting with trepidation for SMR to review good 'ol number 7! As expected, objective, in-depth, honest, and humorous! This channel is by far my favorite. Excellent work as always gentlemen!

I usually have a bottle of Jack Daniel's in my collection. Usually I go for something like the Gentleman's Jack or single barrel, as I find the Old No. 7 to be a bit boring. I don't think any of the JD's are bad, which some people seem to find, they're just easy drinking and not very complex. But taste is subjective and all that. Cheers guys.

I love all types of whiskey and this too. However, my favorite of the Jack family is the single barrel. Good work, lads! Slaintė!

I only normally drink single malt, especially the West coast of Scotland malts.. But now and again if I fancy something different, Jack is the one

Hated four roses, Jim Beam was okay, but old no. 7 is the only brand of whiskey I like.

For age, Jack Daniel's is reportedly made from a mix of barrels of whisky aged between 4 and 12 years. You didn't mention or ask about the mashbill, but in case you want to know that, it is 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. Two things are odd about that, when comparing with mashbills for the big Kentucky bourbon brands. With bourbons, the malted barley is almost always the third largest component, while rye or wheat make up the second largest component after the corn. Also odd is the high amount of corn. With bourbons, the corn is usually in a range of 60% to the high seventies.

Thanks for the info on the mash bill. I think the high fraction of corn might explain the comparative simplicity of the flavour.

Prichard's Distillery are the folks you are thinking of that are grandfathered in and allowed to make Tennessee Whiskey sans the Lincoln County Process.

I recently bought a bottle of Benjamin Prichard's Tennessee Whiskey. I also bought a bottle of their un-aged "White Lightning" corn whisky. I haven't opened either one yet.

Great review, Jack is my go to whiskey, mainly Gentlemen Jack. Looking forward to what you think of GJ and Single Barrel. Don't have high hopes of you two liking the JD's Honey.

And that would be no surprise, as JD Honey is a liqueur and not a whisk(e)y.

If you can find it Old Forrester 1920 bourbon is really a fine dram. Needs to openup a bit but it is the best of their new series.

The best Old Forrester I've seen available here is Statesman, but we'll keep our eyes open.

As someone born and raised in Tennessee, I've never been a fan of Jack products. It always comes off as oily and sooty to me. George Dickel is another TN distillery, but they chill their spirit before the charcoal filtration. This seems to lead to a more balanced, less sooty product, IMHO. The Dickel 12 is a good value and pleasant.

Ahhh yes, the true connesseur's dram of choice. Nobody wants those natural oils and flavors tainting their coke! My "Jack" pun counter is broken now by the way, so thanks for that.

A whiskey that I stay away from. Even the more expensive Jack Daniels I don't like.

@@TheSingleMaltReview it's not too bad... It's just not really too anything. Pretty standard, simple, light and inoffensive mass whiskey as only we Americans could conceive of.

      I have to disagree STRONGLY.
In my opinion, Old No. 7 is the best buy BY FAR one can make up to a price point of about 20 EUR, which is about 23 USD currently, as it has plenty of character, even at the lower 80 proof version.
It also beats most non-peated entry level single malts in my opinion, that is character- and flavourwise (just had a bottle of Glenmorangie 10 a couple of weeks ago, and it was the last time this lifetime that I bought this stuff).
I ALWAYS have a stock of Old No. 7 at home, I drink this stuff regularly, there's just something about this licorice/maple syrup/daisy blossoms/candy corn combination that I just can't get enough of.
And I get that it has a bad reputation within the whisk(e)y - 'community', as it is a mass product by definition, and for most people, that's already enough to condemn it.
But I also understand that some people just don't 'get' this whisk(e)y.
