Clearly you don’t understand what dropping in means. Its not about who has the inside line. This isn’t a fucking priority competition. The kayaker was already on the wave by quite a long way
Considerations have to be taken into account. It’s not a surfboard. The kayak doesn’t have the ability to wait closer to the break and needs to paddle/gain speed long before a normal surfer would.
First guy standing has priority, but since kayakers don't stand up, they should take their boat and go fishing. Surfer clearly is in the priority position nearest to the breaking portion.
Honestly this is just sad. The fact that race has something to do with the kook lifeguards story is bullshit. I'm black and I love to surf but I don't go around trying to own the ocean like its my bitch on a jet ski. Bad call on that lifeguard and the management that hired him, he is clearly not the right person to have out there if he is abusing his "deputized" position as a lifeguard.
wrybread If you take off from further out you have right of way regardless. Guys sit out the back waiting patiently for the big sets and if they are already on the wave they have right of way . BUT a kayak, kiteboard,SUP etc. is the exception to this rule if they are getting to many waves.. get greedy and you will get dropped in on eventually.
+virtue696 they play all day instead of working cause the council is corrupt and play and steal too and lead by example. that place is fucked up ive been there.
+armando vale ive seen many times here these useless lifesavers surfing on the council boards instead of whatching and keeping people safe. its so bad you cant swim or surf in peace because they like kids with a new whistle and authority clearly gone to their heads. I surf other countrys now I don't need racism. and then your belongings are stolen on the beach and these same cops are useless. they ask u questions like "was it your stuff????????"
Am glad we don't have lifeguards like that in hawaii. For dropping in the kayak is more dangerous then the surfer. Surfer had priority over the wave anyway. lifeguard could of ran him over with the ski and get sued. Anyone should be fined is the lifeguard for what he's wearing.
paddle skier abusing superior paddling power. surfer on inside drops in at almost exactly the same time; so who"up and riding first" and WTF is up with the police wasting so much time on a non crime scene? seems to be some history of conflict at this spot..
The lifeguard, was pissed off and circled the surfer quite wrongly. He is making trouble out of nothing, and he is abusing his position as the lifeguard and clearly looks like he is acting like the big shot. Sad those things happen, the lifeguard has serious issues with himselve and take it out on others.
+Kerry Brett hes a racist ive been and surfed at this beach arrogance ,racism, attitude and abuse of puny power its all happening here on a daily basis and the corrupt ANC govt. lead by example and it trickles down.
OK this might seem kind of irrelevant. If this was a surfing contest, the surfer would have been penalised for interference. The lifeguard was basically riding the wave, and the surfer on the inside snaked him. He did pull out of the wave, probably for safety reasons. Now my question is, what is that lifeguard doing out there riding waves? Fact is he could see the surfer was paddling on his inside, but he just carried on. Who actually has right of way out there? I was nearly killed by a boatman when I was 11 years old. I've also been a lifeguard for over 20 years. I would never ride a surf ski amongst surfers. This is the second video I've seen a video in the past month with lifeguards behaving in a dangerous way. That ski is not designed to ride waves, but you can learn to surf with anything I suppose. Its lifesaving equipment, not meant for joy riding. I was at my first nipper champs in Durban in 1984. We all had massive admiration for Durban lifeguards and their clubs. The behaviour of these "new" lifeguards absolutely disgusts me. Yes being a lifeguard can be fun. But public safety comes first.
Peter Finlan I surfed competitively for 15 years. The surfer on the inside only has right of way if someone else hasn't already caught the wave. Its called snaking.
***** How many contests have you competed in? If you're already on the wave you can't take off on the guys inside. First person up and riding has right of way. Basic stuff for any person judging or competing.
Technically, this would be a snake. Dude, caught the wave after the kayak was already on it. Didn't look like the surfer was immediately aware of the kayak. But either way no harm no foul. The surfer obviously wasn't causing any danger. There is a huge difference between being dropped in on and being snaked.
This isnt the first time that lifeguards have harassed not only surfers but smimmers to. everyone should be making a noise about it so that somthing will be done about it. im very happy that it was filmed as thats the best proof you can get. i was born and raised of durban north/south beach and never have i ever had to see shit like this.. its a damn shame..
+mike van der schyff spot on ive surfed here and seen the joker lifesavers here they couldn't save shit without a paddleboard they play on all day instead of respecting the public and doing their job.. take car3e down there and respect from UK bro
This is why I gave up surfiing. that may have been goodo for me or bad for me, but this is the reason I lost any love. Have your wave, I will have death.
Surf kayaker took off on the wave 1st, when the aggressive surfer dropped in on him and wrecklessly cut in front of him risking injury to both parties. Then the boardie has total disrespect for authority on the shore when they are trying to correct his aggressive behavior.
kayaking is lame and you don't know anything about wave priority. You don't surf because you can't and you are ignorant. Just quit your stupid little hobby it's sad.
What an absolute joke. The paddle boat completely dropped in on the surfer. Poor chap then gets harassed. The police and the lifeguard should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.
#1-The kayak dropped in. #2- No kayak or SUP or wind surfer or any of them have the right of way over a surfer and they should not even be near surfers. What kind of a half ass'ed place do you live in?
Ive been to Durban 5 times surfing 10 years or so back. Don't think I will go back again. What on earth has happened to that wonderful, ordered country?
The guy filming has no clue. Just jealous he doesn't have the glory job. Can't swim, can't surf, never be a hero. The lifeguard is educating the wave hog on etiquette and safety. It's called making a prevention.
+H Mitch where do u live ha ha u joking right? liberal lefty? goody goody 2 shoes. best thing you can do buddy is get off your fucking liberal dumb ass and catch a plane to Durban and hire a surfboard and then meet up with your useless joke of a paddle board ass barge wrek joke of a play time life saver and see how long the friendship lasts. ZZZzzzZ zzZZzz z!
The person closest to the breaking part of the wave has the right of way (in this case the surfer). Sometimes the one riding the wave already has right of way but if you pause it at about 0.02 you'll see that the surfer gets to his feet just as the canoe actually catches the wave. It's close and technical but gee - what a storm in a teacup!
Looks like they shared the wave and the surfer got off when he could. If this happened in Australia that lifesaver would be sacked, bloody dangerous circling the public in the wave zone. the ski should also be nowhere near the surfers he could kill someone, happens at least once a year at surf carnivals, someone gets knocked out by ski and drowns. the only one in danger in this video was the surfer.
Lifeguards where I live at in florida would never fuck with any real local surfer. They stay away. They won't even save a surfer that might be drowning. They respect surfers to know the ocean better than them.
Joe surfer I dont know about Florida but in Australia the lifeguards are more than likely local surfers. We respect them and they respect us. This video soooo sums up South Africa in a lot of ways.
You guys don’t get it. Don’t argue with them. The cop will side with his friend. Witnesses have no effect. Better give him 20 bucks so you can leave peacefully.
Kayaker was dropping in prior to the surfer taking off, so even though the surfer was closer to the peak it would seem the kayaker did nothing wrong, certainly too close to call.Lifeguard was definitely a jack ass.
can't believe the lifeguard would actually go out and start scolding the surfer i haven't seen anything like that in any time i have been surfing or watched people drop in. most of the time the surfers usually resolve it themselves weather its a punch up or just apologise and move on but never have a life guard scold him while circling him and coming so close to the surfer that the ski actually hits him and then having the audacity to turn round and get the whole police involved
Yall misunderstood the point here: it was the surfers here, who told the car gang, that it is dangerous and forbidden for car rowdies on a public beach, and that the beach is not just some township, where kids get runover . . . and then the car gang started flexing their muscles as in some tribal intimidation pre war exercises. It was the surfers here, who stayed very cool and civilised confronting these visual tribal provocations.
Let's leave the race part out of this. It's obvious that neither saw each other upon takeoff. Kayakers are faster than surfers, so they position themselves further back than surfers to get onto a wave. In fact, that's the preferred way to do it, so that you can tuck yourself into the curl after it's broken rather than risk getting thrown by the lip as you're taking off. That is what happened, if you notice the kayaker getting to and staying at the peak. An observant surfer would know that. The surfer then pumped a couple of times to cut in front of the kayaker, then stayed there for a couple more turns. That's a bad move no matter who owns the wave. There's nothing right about making a bad situation worse. I'm sure that's what concerned the lifeguard. If you were to pull this stunt in front of an outrigger canoe in Hawaii, you'd hear about it, for sure. The surfer should have bailed at first chance, maybe discussed it with the kayaker himself, rather than hotdogging it. Is the kayaker taking all the waves? That's something to talk about. But folks, there's plenty of waves out there, this one isn't going to make or break you unless you let it.And it's pretty stupid to argue with lifeguards and cops over this, even if he did bump your board with his ski. You're in surf, not a lake.

Your Tax Dollars At Work!! That surfer didnt even hit the kayaker... Kayaking in the surf zone is also FAR more dangerous than adding another surfboard to the mix... Sigh....

As for the rest of the comments about priority on the wave.... The paddle skier had just had a wave that's why u went... And this video is not about who had right of way on the wave it's about the abuse of power of the life guard... You cannot arrest some one for something so ridiculous!
Hey I just got stuffed today too! I definitely skipped out on the jet ski, argument, and calling the cops thing though. Yup I just paddled back out and waited for the next 200 similar waves to come through.
The jetski lifeguard tells him to leave but then continues circling him for a couple minutes. When the surfer has an opening to leave he does. If the surfer had paddled back out into the lineup after being asked to leave that would be another matter.
well we don't really know by the video who's right.. because we don't know whose turn was it. but like the surfer was very skilled and kayaks have huge advantage over surfers they can catch much more waves with those paddles...the surfer didnt seem to be causing any danger besides spraying the kayak like a boss lol. so, all we know is that life saver looked hella gay with those speedos..

@samsharpe182182 That's funny, because there aren't ANY blacks in the water where I live, and that's a little place called Southern California! However, if a black does stray toward the mean high-tide line, call a frickin' lifeguard!
The paddle boat is what dropped in on the surfer who was clearly on the inside of the wave.

+Bones of Gold Skateboarding ive surfed at this beach that stupid life saver couldn't even save your life hed drown hes surfing all day they fuck around surfing instead of doing what they are paid for. this isn't a western beach these guys are a joke. at this same beach up to a dozen peple drowned at xmas and these lifeguards ZZZZzzzZZ ZZZzzz best u go thgere mate but watch your bag on the beach......
ridiculous, that oke must lose his job.
Looks like you are arguing with locals and lifeguards, you can't win when you are visiting a foreign country.
I don't see the big deal.. Ok, the kayaker can argue that the surfer snaked him but is that really a big deal?
yeah i know what the kayaker did. i surf to, but i was so confused as to why the were acting on surf rules. thanks
@samsharpe182182 That's funny, because there aren't ANY blacks in the water where I live, and that's a little place called Southern California! However, if a black does stray toward the mean high-tide line, call a frickin' lifeguard!
04:26 '...because we are black...'
Seriously.
