    OMG balling watching this…😭my mom, myself and my daughter all grew up in Los Angeles and I didn’t know all this rich black history. The First AME church is still there by USC! I think there are several around the city. We lived 10 minutes away from there and I banked at 300 Spring St where her business was (331 Spring St).
    black Californians had some unity until the Ronald Reagan crack era.
    The LA River flooding is so surprising/suspicious to me because that river is usually very parched. Thank you for the video. I’m subbed. 💐

      I was thinking the same thing. Grew up in LA near USC and went to an AME Church, and never knew the tru history.
      I also find it ironic that everything she built, nothing else, flooded. What's ironic is that all of the thriving black towns throughout America mysteriously flooded and became lakes, and burned down, or taken over.
      I'm proud to be a LA BABY. Thank you TT Bitty😊

When I found out I began to love my name because of her. I attended an NAACP Woman's brunch and was happy to portray 'Biddy' in the 'Who's Who' entertainment part of the meeting. I entered from the back of the room while the DJ played 'Twenty-Five Miles' by Edwin Starr! Only my smarty pants attorney friend could guess who I was. 🙂

    Just recently finding out on the internet (in my adult years) about the rich black history of California. Some time go, I learned about Mary Ellen Pleasant being the wealthiest woman in California at her time in San Francisco. The mayor is now a black woman trying to clean up and revamp the city.
    A few years ago, we visited the city of Coloma in Northern California which was a gold rush city founded by a black man and named after him.
    There was also a town in Richmond, Ca in which black residents owned land and were bought/swindled out of it by the city. I just saw a video about that on yt recently. This city was/is predominantly black and where Tupac shot his Brenda’s got a baby video where he frequented near Oakland, Ca. Master P also lived there before/when he started his rap career.
    Born and raised in California and the most black history I knew of was The Black Panthers. And me, my brother and mother all had the same college African American studies professor. Smh

    Some parts of Los Angeles and the city of Pacoima were settled and built by black/Afro Mexicans. Theses areas were predominantly black (and English speaking) until the reagan/crack era.

    Writing from Georgetown Guyana. Fascinating! The African proverb that says until the lion knows how to write, the record will always glorify the hunter, comes to mind. It is interesting to see that while some whites in the US are motivated by a desire to hide their more sordid activities against black people, your video coming from a black person goes to the trouble to include the spectacular contributions by whites on behalf of blacks at a time when it was at least unpopular and at worst even life-threatening. I am referring to the ruling of Judge Hayes. Your work in transmitting these gleaming gems of history is most timely.

      The United States took California from Mexicans with brown skin not black from Mexico and yes the brown skinned Mexicans became Americans after the Mexican and American war. Blacks were still slaves in the south when brown skinned Mexicans owned Texas all the way to California. 5000 black slaves ran into Mexico to escape slavery. That is what started the Mexican and American war. The blacks in Los Angeles their parents came into Los Angeles in 1910 when Mexicans already occupied Los Angeles and they were all brown skinned not black who were here first. You have to understand Mexicans are Spaniards mixed with native Americans. Native Americans were first in United States way before all races came to America then came Spaniards then came Mexicans of brown skin color then whites then blacks in the 1900s. I trip out on you blacks someone who has a quarter black in them you claim them as tiger woods who doesn't say he is black but Korean as his mother. my advice is for everyone to go downtown Los Angeles to see her Murals. She partyed with Mexico's last Governor Pio Pico and other dignitaries of the times. PBS, C-SPAN has told her story as well as Bruce's Beach, Manhattan Beach California

    The images are life like and incredibly drawn! How were the images recreated because I cannot imagine there were actual daguerreotypes of Biddy from the 1850s. Was a computer software program used to create the images and colors?

    • @UniqueColoring
      @UniqueColoring  Год назад

      Yes to your question on both fronts. Not giving too much more detail on the creation process as it is a trade secret. But you're absolutely correct. While the photographic process you referenced was in existence (though nascent), Biddy didn't make much use of the technology. Some fire off in the comments here insisting I use "photos" of Biddy, plural, when I only know of one low-res extant version, which I employ in the article version on the website and in the book. Besides, these videos aren't meant to function like documentaries in the sense of imagery. The time periods lack quality images, if any can be found at all. So I treat the images like a biopic. Viewers of historical films are fine when an actor that hardly resembles the historical figure reenacts their life and exploits. But here, they decry the efforts. Can't win 'em all I suppose. Thanks for your comment!

    It's refreshing local Californian history. If she was living today. All her clothes would be off her body as a local celebrity.
