Jeff Kirsch built me a snare years ago and for what he charged me i recieved an amazing 8x14maple shelled snare w/tube lugs...he does good work.your videos are really good.keep it up.
This is a great video. I'm a studio owner/guitar player and years ago I was in a drum shop that had a sale on a Pearl piccolo snare. They had 2 of them, one model had the gaskets and the other didn't. I liked the one without the gaskets and bought that one. The gaskets seemed like an over designed thing. None of my vintage drums had them. I was just asking some drum buddies about this recently and no one could really come up with the 'why'. Thanks again.
Nice! That's a great way to compare those snare drums. Yeah, I always just assumed it was something dreamed up by marketing departments to create some new feature to sell drums. In fairness, of course, they DO protect the finish from contact with the metal lugs, so if you're buying the drums as collectibles keep them on. But if you're playing them as musical instruments, those gaskets gotta go!
Everything is very simple. The gaskets dampen the vibration of the case, with them the sound is stifled. If you remove them, the drum casing begins to breathe and the sustain increases.
It’s amazing how much the drum opens up and sustains more without gaskets, I have a 6.5 x 14 Supra rocker without them and it sings lol almost to a fault. Btw I thought the mighty hoops sounded much brighter as opposed to the steak Ludwig hoops whereas you heard it the other way around… interesting how that happens lol. Both sounded good and I had no preference, just different. Thanks for sharing.
I prefer the sound without the gaskets for sure! The rim comparison was cool too. But it makes me wonder if I know what "darker" means! I thought the brass hoops had a brighter sound,, especially with softer and more off center hits. The steel hoops gave a more muffled sound to me. Almost like it was a different head or the muffler was engaged. Thanks bro!
The old quote says, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture." Yeah, trying to find the right words to talk about this stuff is a challenge. In this particular case, the drum with brass hoops always sounded a little too low-pitched to me, with very little bite to the attack (and I love brass hoops!). The stock steel hoops definitely give the drum much more of a modern attack, but lose a little of the vintage character to my ears. I may end up swapping these hoops for 1.6mm hoops, which may split the difference. I'll of course report back if so!
@@DylanWissing what wires did it have? I usually put Puresound Blasters and they definitely add more volume. Now I want to check my Steel snares to see if I need to do this 😏👊
I've been removing them from all Drums!!! It's a modern thing & all old drums dnt have them!!! Rubber is a insulator & kills sum Vibration!!! Sum things are Marketing Ploys!!! Less is Best!!!
That was a great video. Thank you so much for posting it and all the detail and time you put into it I really enjoyed it.😀👏🏻👏🏻

Thank for this eye opening video.
Try the 1.6mm hoops, it eliminates the splay

@@DylanWissing cool thanks!
The steel gave the drum a little more volume 👌, I need to see if my steel drums have rubber gaskets 🤔
Definitely more volume! The attack of the drum now speaks much more clearly through the microphones.

Very proud of you. LOL
I have another video planned based on your Classic Maple revamping formula, to see if I can recreate the secret recipe!
@@DylanWissing Can’t wait to see it!!
Totally agree! Since I took them gaskets off, she really sounds like a Black Beauty! Thanx bro!
I take it the metal to metal contact isnt goint to illicit corrosion?
Time to get happy!!
I liked the sound with gaskets a lot more. Cleaner tone, more sustain, warmer lows. 100% subjective, of course! :)
That alignment “splay” can and will cause issues in the future. Sax Custom Drums
What issues does it cause? Thanks
Just buy '69 or earlier. The best everl
