He and others like Akagi Ketahei [赤木桁平; actually Akagi Kouhei, but Tanizaki is calling him Ketahei here, somewhat jocularly], Eguchi Kan [江口渙] - they just came around with nobody to introduce them or anything. By then he had written [such iconic works as] ‘Hana’ and ‘Imogayu’. He looked pretty much the same as he did at the time of his death, although he later did get more neurotic - with his sharp eyes getting even more so. Overall, he had the look of an exceptionally brilliant man. I wonder what he would be like now were he alive - my guess is that he would have pursued his academic interests, establishing himself as a scholar, and perhaps writing literary works in his spare time - that would have suited him best, I do really think so.'

すごい、大変貴重な音声ありがとうございます。学者で生活を立ててサブで作家、確かに彼はそのような暮らしの時期がありましたね。その方が安定していて少しは精神的に余裕が持てたのかもしれませんが、体力的に厳しかったとか。人の育成にも関わってほしかったなあ、と惜しい気持ちです。
