    Knives Out was fantastic, probably one of my favorite movies that has come out in the last 10 years. I really think the misdirect is important in a mystery.

    Call of Cthulhu is a good resource to turn to. They have been doing investigative mysteries for years. Specifically, I like the concept of the Idea roll, which any player can make to get a guaranteed hint from the GM (the roll determines HOW they receive the hint).
    If you want a more D&D version, I would consider tuning into Does It Roll's Rime of the Frostmaiden on Sundays or in podcast form.
    Investigative mysteries are different from your typical D&D, and should be written differently as well. As long as Candle keep doesn't have these mysteries turn into dungeon crawls, it should hopefully be fine.

    Ideas for a Candlekeep campaign
    - each player recieves an invitation from the Avowed to come to Candlekeep after a disturbing discovery (the names of the players in "The Canopic Being")
    - The Omnipaedia, a cataloguing golem who learned too much, became sentient, and now seeks to consume all information.
    - Set the Book of Cylinders on the Snout of Omgar, replace fish people with tortles. (see Tortle Package). Ties in better with the Canopic Being, as the Snout of Omgar is just a stone's throw from Tashluta
    - Add the Gnomish Ceromorphs (mind-flayers) who crash landed in Rime of the Frostmaiden to the cult in Kandlekeep Dekonstruktion.

    15:45 - Best example of this was 1999 before The Matrix came out. For those that saw it opening weekend... BEST marketing campaign ever. I had NO idea what was going to happen in that movie, and it was a truly amazing event during that time.

      They're likely bred on a spelljammer hailing from Krynnspace, since that is were they were supposedly first created to power gnomish sidewheelers (aka. dreadnoughts). Because why not power your massive mechanical spelljammer by hamster wheel?
      Just make the hamsters the size of bears, makes sense too me! :D
      Giant space hamsters are great.

    Now that the book has come out I have found an issue preparing to DM.
    Something I have been struggling with, the Book doesn't seem to discuss the players starting equipment based on their level. They are designed to be both a totally isolated one-shot with new characters(at that level) or a drop into a larger campaign. However, in a drop in your characters are going to have many different items. So do I send in my players for a one shot with no magic items beyond starting equipment?
    This will radically change balance, 6 level 14 characters with a mix of uncommon and rare magic itmes and even a few very rare items are radically more powerful then 6 level 14 characters with starting equipment. Mid campaign they are going to have those advantages of adventuring, but now what is best for them to have a fun time? Consider a fighter with starting equipment, and doesn't have any weapons that can deal magic damage, fighting creatures resistant to non-magical dmg. This single item completely rebalances this character. This feels like a major balance oversight.
    Curious what people think, and if I should just use the DMG recommended progression for magic items per level of play, or maybe the guide in Xanathars. I am disappointed this doesn't seem discussed in the book, unless I missed it.

    • @toshley6192

      You'll have to use your own judgement about whether the encounters are balanced for your party.
      That being said, it is not really possible to run this adventure as it is written, since that was not the intent when it was written.
      This is an adventure that was written almost as a tutorial campaign with newer DMs in mind, so it gives you a little bit of everything. Tons of different creatures that are used in unique ways, all of the gameplay elements, but nothing that is very complex that a new DM might struggle with.
      Personally, this book is perfect for my style of campaign building, where I want to let the story evolve naturally, and follow the threads my characters pull. I mix and combine different chapters of different adventures, adjusting details as necessary.
      It's a lot of work, but I enjoy the process. If you're the type of DM who just likes to be able to open an adventure book and follow it, this one might not be for you.

    re: weird knowledge checks. I let my players tell me any flavour justifications and then I'll allow for bonuses to the checks. As opposed to me telling them, "well, your background does or doesn't let you know that..." As long as their justification isn't completely nonsensical, I'd let them have it; but I don't prompt them.
    Edit: As an example. A player could say, "I'm not a sailor, but I travelled to this continent my boat. As a chaotic good character, I think I would've helped out on the ship during my passage. Can I have knowledge on knot tying?" I'd reply, "Yes, you may roll with advantage (or lower the DC check by X)"

    I was a major fan of the anime Case Closed growing up and they pointed out all the clues at the end when you may have noticed something in passing through the episode. There was also a clue in the preview for the next episode but when you watched it week to week, you'd probably have problems remembering it

    For mysteries, evidence is not only clues of the crime but also clues to motives. Leave evidence in known characters "back yards" etc.. make sure people take notes as to which characters were present for what discovery etc..

    even if somebody figures out the mystery, you can make the adventure about Proving what they figured out, or a ticking clock to interrupt a key part of what happens next in the villians agenda.

    Have you guys just given up on fixing the Psionic Spell casting from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything Aberrant Mind subclass? There is still no way to swap out Psionic spells on level up even though the subclass should level up. New features and options are great but existing features should work the way they are intended. Allowing people to just edit their known spells directly would be enough to fix the issue for the Aberrant Mind, Clockwork Soul, and all other classes/subclasses with similar features.

    I hope for 6th ed. or 5.5 that each Class could choose 3 starting skill profs with the option of sacrificing 2 in order to gain 1 Expertise. So a Ranger or Barb could have expertise in Survival or Nature - giving that character a feeling of contribution out of combat.

    One reason I dislike doing puzzles or riddles is because my players just want to roll the die and solve it without the player solving it. And to a point I get that but that’s not the reason you run those things. Hoping this book doesn’t end up the same way for them 😣

      they would have to expend another spell slot every time they save, they get one save when its cast. and its not compulsory truth telling, they just cant willingly tell a lie. they can still mislead the characters if they are smart and choose their words well, or they might just not know

Also DM tip of the day you roll behind the screen and don't tell the PCs if they fail or succeed saves for things like that. Stops your players from meta gaming and recasting Zone of Truth or doing that chair thing.

    • @CaitSith87
      @CaitSith87 3 года назад

      @@skillganon606 the spell states that you know if it works or not? Nope not much thought has been put in most of the spells and how a society would work with this factors. For example invisibility is a 2nd level spell. How is it that not all manners are raided by magic users? Why are there even rogues when every spell caster is better at stealig than the best thief? There are a lot of this things but currently they dont come to mind but its not the first time i have this discussion. Its like skyrim where they put a mage in a dungeon and dont block your power? Imagine what happens? And magic is extremly common in the world of skirm. Its just not much thought put into it. So i am confused why they make a mistery modul when all this spells when in reality the police would just call of priest of the justice god and he would zone of truth every murder. Especially in cnadlekeep where mostly wizards and clerics live?

    • @skillganon606
      @skillganon606 3 года назад

      @@CaitSith87 that's something a DM has to work with like I said before rolling away from your players will help. But in my world magic is inherently dangerous so being a magic user and making it to second level spells without blowing yourself up is kinda a feat in itself. Also mages police other mages because the last time they didn't the normies almost culled them. Also if you don't make it a murder mystery you could just have to spend a bunch of time in library and monasteries searching for some lost scroll. Just make the clues and leads inanimate objects, or give leads but make them obtuse. The mcguffin was last held by Emperor Basil the Bloody 200 years ago but since then has been lost is a great start. Then if your players want to go to his tomb make it a little dungeon and when they get to his corpse they can speak with dead and he can point them in the right direction and have an excuse as to why he doesn't know specifics.
