    Just listened to the episode. Absolutely fantastic interview. I love the way he presents topics that can reach beyond the boundaries of our little bubble. (Perhaps not so little anymore)

      Yay! Glad you were able to tune in early. The Happy Urbanist has some good lessons for us all. Hoping for a big Premiere in just an hour. Cheers! John

    The great pair of aerial photos (2000' of publicly-funded, gold-plated infrastructure, configured two ways) is Alex MacLean's awesome work. On the left, Church Street in downtown Burlington VT; on the right, nearby suburban Williston. Great episode.

    One of the key moments in Dutch history: 1874 lifting of the fortress act! Meaning that cities which are designated as military fortresses (vestingen) no longer NEED to have a real physical city wall. The direct consequence for nearly all vestingen was that the city walls were torn down, ridding themselves of the straightjacket and allowing ‘modern’ developments. From an urbanist point of view often the start of real problems… i am lucky that in my home town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch the city wall is still there, defining the binnenstad, our equivalent of downtown!

      Yes! I love the city wall there in ‘s-Hertogenbosch... btw my on-bike interview with Mark Wagenbuur aka @BicycleDutch is coming soon.

    I must have seen over 100 of your interviews and apart from a few specialistic interviewees all spoke about the same 20 issues, either focussing on one or a few OR on practically all, knitting it together in an overall approach. Meaning that the underlying theory or theories are quite simple and easy to understand, but generally unknown to the outside world. Like shop keepers promoting cars and fending off cyclists and pedestrians. We had those over here 50 years ago. It is the same processes happening all over the western hemisphere.
    The key point seems to be: how to reach those car-aficionados and how to convert them…

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  8 дней назад

      Yep, pretty much.
      And speaking of reaching "car-aficionados" one of my favorite episodes of all time is this one with Ethan Tufts from the @HelloRoad Channel

      Thanks so much for tuning in! I hope the message, although repetitive, isn't too terribly boring.
      Cheers!

      @@ActiveTownsis an update of his activities useful / warranted? His did his channel fare since his interview with you. I noticed he formulated an equivalent of fietser and wielhebber but then for cars. It’s basically the same thought than Jason Slaughter’s favourite saying: there are no car people, or bike people or train people.

    • @reneolthof6811
      @reneolthof6811 6 дней назад

      Wielrenner of corse, not wielhebber…

    We need more people like him in every city! The cynical doomer NJB fanboys who believe being angry 24/7 is a good thing and running away like a coward is the only solution can get lost.

      We've started a Jon Jon cloning initiative. hehe 🤣
      In all seriousness, though, it's important that everyone finds what is the best fit for them. For me, it's about telling the positive, inspiring stories of the people, places, and programs making progress in transforming their environments.
      Others provide more of a shame and blame approach, which has its place.
      Jon Jon body of work is a nice balance.
      Thanks so much for watching and for engaging in a way that works for you.
      Cheers!
      John

      if he gets your feelings hurt he must do something right, as NJB speaks the truth. Some people are adverse to the truth. And calling people who like what NJB puts on his channel "doomers" and " fanboys " are assumptions and far from reality.
