- In this video we look at the equipment I use for recreational tree climbing, in detail describing each item.
Will look at basic safety gear, throw line kit, saddle, ropes and general equipment like slings pulleys and carabiners.
In later videos we will cover Single Rope Climbing techniques and use of Alternating Lanyard Techniques for higher up in the tree.
Very well presented and so detailed. Looking forward to part 2/3 & more tree camping.👍
Enjoyed filming and editing this one, amazing place up in the canopy, all the best Pat
Pat's videos are always interesting and very practical, aren't they?
Great to see you out and about again ⛺
Thanks Paul, nice to be out in such a beautiful piece of woodland, can, t think of a better place to be, thanks Pat
How old are you? (I am 59 and busting to get up into a few trees!)

Thanks Martin, such a nice comment, welcome to my channel, all the best Pat
Your videos are so awesome I’m climbing now and I’m 50 years old and it looks s great exercise I love it.
Yes another world up there in the canopy, amazing, thanks Pat
I've still got all the SRT gear from my caving days. Tempted to dig it out and climb a few trees. 😀
I, am sure you would have a great time and make use of your gear, make you feel young again as well, thanks Pat
Im going to go up my Jacaranda in the front yard before I cut it down. I'll also be teaching the kids how to climb. A real life skill and looks like lots of fun. Thank You.
Hi Peter, tree climbing, something we all did when we were kids, not now that screens have taken over, great you are going to intr you lucky kids to the simple but amazing pastime, thanks Pat
The open air, the birdsong - and the commentary (or poetry!) from Patrick.
Hi John, a beautiful woodland this, just being there makes you feel happy, be back there soon for part 2, all the best Pat
Always very happy when I look on RUclips and see a Pat video, showing the world the true Yorkshireman spirit. I've probably got another 15 years working life ahead, but Pat's living my dream for when I'm finally done.
Nice comments Dave, those 15years will pass quickly, then the retired ones even faster, thanks Pat
Had to laugh at the title for this.... .a middle age man has a kit cos he likes climbing trees for fun...thats why I love this channel...ya never know wots coming next..👍👍
Yes my interest change every month or so, been meaning to do a vidio on tree climbing for last year, and the filming as we get high in the trees does get a bit challenging, hope you enjoy it, all the best Pat
Thank you. It was a pleasure watching your video. I'll definetely go back in the trees like I am 30 years Younger :-)
Glad you enjoyed the video Jean, did,nt use to use all this gear when we were kids climbing trees, all the best Pat
Patrick i too just retired from the Power company. Always liked climbing but the freedom of being in the trees moving around and the smell of living trees is much better than hanging off a power pole with its treatment.
Yes I, am the same Ryan, similar poles used to be impregnated in creosote. The trees are to really different and we're not doing it for work, all the best Pat
Hi Pat, I had no idea about tree climbing techniques but I certainly do now after watching this. Excellent and informative video mate...well done!
Best regards
George.
Thanks George, yes quite alot involve as you can see, but at least you will climb a tree safely, not like we did when we were kids, all the best Pat
Started climbing for fun two years ago and 66 years old this year. Your videos are quite inspiring to another old lad! Amazing to see all the new kit available now for safe climbing. I am in the Pacific NW USA above Seattle. Some fantastic huge trees here and even have several big ones in my own yard. Thanks, Pat, for all your efforts in sharing your experiences.
Thanks Stuart only sterted using all the gear to climb safely a few years ago, makes you feel young again. Jealous of your massive trees you have over there some of them are unbelievable tall, keep on climbing, all the best Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 Come over for a visit sometime, Pat. You are always welcome and I can show you some amazing trees on public land that we can poach a climb on.
Hello,
Greetings from Israel...
I came across your videos, lovely ones.
I am into canyoning and abseiling myself.
Love your methodological videos.
Hi Benjamin, nice to hear from Israel, we have similar intrests, I hope to be out wildcamping soon in my next vidios, all the best Pat
Thanks Patrick ....looking forward to part two 👍🏻
Thanks Andy, bit more exiting in next part, but had to go through the gear first, such a lot to talk about and such interesting gear. All the best Pat
Thanks for further expanding my knowledge, I like climbing for geocaches on trees.
Sounds interesting, thanks Pat
Hi Pat,
Yes very interesting, looking forward to seeing parts 2 and 3.
All the best, Dave.
Thanks Dave, parts 2 and 3 should be amazing as we climb high up into the tree, thanks Pat
Pat, you are incorrigible in the best possible way....I'm just blown away by your intrepid adventures...looking forward to Part 2..
Thanks so kind of you to say, I like a bit of adventure, makes life so interesting, thanks Pat
Hi Patrick, you should have your own TV series! - this is inspirational and well presented. All the best.
Thanks Adrian, really appreciate your kind comments, thanks Pat
You rock ! Were about the same age,I remember the trees when young, you make me want to climb one now , thinking about it !!! Just for fun to the first branch 😉 then we'll see from there .!!!
Go for it! even just get off the ground and you will feel the exhilaration......all the best Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 thank you my friend. J.D.
Thanks for such informative thorough content. You have a great way of presenting your pastimes and have inspired me to attempt a tree camp. 👍
Thanks for that, really interesting gear and such a different pastime....... thanks Pat
Another good 'un, Pat . Helen is most impressed. Again ! Can't wait for the next instalments. I predict there'll be lots of folks up trees shouting for ya to get part 3 done, when part 2 is out!!! Helen sez can you get a wheelchair up there? What's next....tree pub! Now there's an idea..........
Nice to hear from you and hope your both well, not many beer festival,s at the moment. Trees provide such a great place just to watch what is going on around you, a different world up there, and belive it or not this tree is only 150 meters from a pub, not that they would know I was there, all the best Pat
Great video on your kit Pat. When I was doing arborist work (and rock climbing) we used a lot of the same equipment.
Hi Pete, yes so many different set ups for tree climbing, everybody has there personal choice, this works well for me, can be about slow, but don,t think I would have the energy to go any faster...... thanks Pat
Hullo hullo Patrick from a cold wet Denmark...!
Found your videos today. Very inspirational...!
Will get me a tree Harness, for sure...!
To my knowledge, "RAD", Rapid is only referring to: "Rapid Change"
Rapid change of direction.
From Ascending To Descending...
and or back...!
No need to switch gear with direction,
unlike other safe ascend and descend methods.
RAD is a simpler climb, whitch is a bonus, for recreational users.
Stay Safe...Greetings.
Hi Jakob, its wet here as well, no good for tree climbing, looking forward to Spring. Rad is a great way to climb, all the best Pat
When I was a wee boy we just climbed trees for fun, or to scrump apples, it never accured to me climbing trees was a recreation !
Yes we were the same Malcolm, always climbing trees in my childhood, no its just as exciting, but a lot safer, all the best Pat
you are one of my favourite outdoorsy channels, informative, interesting...keep doing what you are doing pat
Nice of you to say that, hope to keep you entertained, all the best Pat
You are looking well! Glad to have this personal look at your choices! We used to climb in the orchard near my parent's cottage. We would spend hours up in the boughs telling stories and grabbing the odd apple or handful of cherries. I can't wait for your next installment! Thank you for sharing a part of your day with us! Cheers from North Tonawanda, New York.
Good to hear from New York, nothing like being high up in a tree, another world up there, part 2 out in 2 weeks, all the best Pat
My hats off to ya mate. I'm older than you and still climbing. Love all these new techniques. Great vid. Keep climbing mate👍👍👍
Thanks will, good to here your still climbing, such a amazing place to spend a few hours, all the best Pat
Adventure before dementia! I'm stealing someone else's quote there, but it's so appropriate for what you do, Pat. Don't stop sharing your adventures with us. Cheers from the U.S.
Nice to hear from you Mark in the US, very true what you say, so I, am going to cram as much in as possible, while I can, all the best Pat
Just some information for guys just getting started that dont have 500$ to spend on a harness. I just bought one from Amazon called kisslove thats very similar to the sequoa . it surprisingly well made and I wear it 8 hours at a time and barely notice it on. Its only around 80$. Ive inspected all the key attachments and the stitching is well done and the d rings and the rings for the floating bridge are robust and we'll made. I doubt it will last as long at the petzel but for the cost and as often as I climb it will definately hold up till I can afford to upgrade. Good video and safe climbing
Thanks Carl, and your right you can pick up better priced gear if you search around, might not last as long but will get you started, thanks Pat
its always great to see what you've been getting up to Patrick..looking forward to part 2.
Thanks Shaun, always looking for new ideas, parts 2 and 3 alot more exciting as we a end high up in the tree, thanks Pat
Phenomenal production 👍👍.
Thank you Nico, really nice of you to say, thanks Pat
Great stuff Pat. Look forward to another tree climb adventure camp. I remember as a kid (I’m still a big kid) I clumb a local tree escaping the local mad dog. I was there for hours. It was like a cartoon. It got bored. Everyone passing just laughed. 😞 years later I was working on the area and the tree was there. Bigger but I still couldn’t resist. Up I went. It never leaves (leaves 🍁) you. If it’s in you you’ll be up them. I still do it. Not as high though. Anyway great to see you amang the trees again. Atb
Hi Andy, I have no intention of ever growing up and being respectable, where's the fun in that. Luckly I live in the same area we're I was born and still roam round the areas I grew up in.
Hope to get another tree camp in, will have to see, the best laid plans etc.
Be careful with that 7% beer, all the best Pat
Really enjoy the mini series Pat and love the passion you have for all you do. You brought back some child hood memories I thought long gone. Kids today I fear will never know the pure thrill of climbing a tree. Roll on episodes Two. 👍🌲.
Thanks David, I, ve always loved climbing, especially trees and it made sense to make a vidio on one of my childhood hobbies that has stayed with me. Enjoyed filming and editing this one, parts 2 and 3 maybe a bit more challenging to film, thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 looking forward to it Pat. I take it the home made camera poll will be making a come back. Have fun and stay safe. All the best Dave.
You are a master at this, i learn alot of this..
Thank you, there are so many different bits of climbing gear and teqniques, hopefully this explains the basics, all the best Pat
Great video Patrick, there is nothing like getting out amongst the trees, whether it be climbing them, walking through them in the Bush or camping amongst them. Looking forward to watching your next videos, cheers,
Lyndal from The Bush Telegraph
Yes best place to be, thanks Pat
Thanks Pat, last years tree camping vid is probably my favourite vid on your whole channel. Can't wait for parts 2 and 3
It was a amazing amp that one, hope to repeat it soon, thanks Pat
Some of the most enjoyable activities are the ones society thinks you should "grow out of" ! 👍 A lot of people have trouble climbing stairs by the time they are 50 , so you should enjoy life while you can .
Yes Rik cram as much in as you can, I, am definitely returning to my childhood interests, all the best Pat
Hi Patrick. I hope you are well. I'm now well into tree climbing! The other day I climbed one with an arborist friend, he was rather quicker than I was. We reached the 70+ foot canopy of a massive tree near Durham. It was such a fantastic afternoon and a fabulous experience. I may one day do some tree climbing in Sheffield, that's where my son lives. ..... Three months ago, I had a fear of heights when I started out and I whimped out at 10 foot high. Then it became 16 foot. Then I was terrified to get beyond the first branch. Then I sat on a branch and couldn't go further. Then one time, I accidentally threw my throw line too high, and ended up hanging from a 50 foot branch, and bottled it to go up further. All the time, safety was in my mind, and part of it is learning how the gear behaves, and learning to trust it. It helped when I climbed with 2 sets of gear to put my mind at peace (my recent massive tree climb was with one main rope and 2 lanyards). On changeovers when up the tree (to advance my rope), it helps me when I use both lanyards, and I test them as I go. When your life is on the line and it depends on some knots you tie, it makes you learn them rather effectively! Thankyou Patrick for helping to inspire me in this, you are one the key people that provided me with inspiration to do something about what I only watched with interest previously.
Stuart I'm so glad my video has inspired you to get up into the trees. It can be quiet scary up there, which is probably a good thing, making you aware that it's not the safest environment, but with the right equipment and safety awareness it can become a safe place, hope you continue to enjoy your time up in the trees, thanks Pat 👍
Just got in from 5+ hours out on the canoe I put RUclips on to find something to wind down too..... ahh excellent Patric climbing trees!
Sounds like you had a good paddle, thanks Pat
Well presented lesson
Nice of you to say, thanks Pat
Excellent, thank you very well explained .
Your welcome, glad you found it useful, thanks Pat
Me and Andrew Motnacz were the climbers on our estate. He was better than me but we did it year after year. We'd climb anything! Great vid
Thanks Billy yes some people climbed, some did, nt, I, am glad I was one who did, like you, thanks Pat

Your opening words so true... i used to climb tree’s and it was like natural. Now no way scary stuff.
Yes gets a bit more difficult as you get older, just don, t accept it, all the best Pat
Thank you so very much the inspiration I was looking for!!! Stay up on the trees my friend
That is great to hear Osneider, such a great place to be, high in the canopy, all the best Pat
Watched your last tree camping video and was blown away, an awesome thing to do, I would 1/ accidently hang myself 2/ fall out the tree 3/ get stuck and end up in a fire brigade training video. Looking forward to part 2 and 3.
Thanks Toby, certainty a different place to wildcamped, once your up there then its just like another wildcamp, on with filming 2 and 3 now, all the best Pat
Hi Pat, I feel what you felt like,
I'm still climbing at 60 year young. Though slowing down a bit since I got frozen shoulder. Good job mate..
Hi Abdul, yes there is no feeling like it, high up in the canopy, keep on enjoying your climbing, all the best Pat
I'm enjoying the tutorial Pat!
Glad you enjoyed it Doug, all the best Pat
I love Your and challenging tutorials of tree climbing techniques!
Thanks Modris, yes all parts of scending a tree are challenging one way or the other, thanks Pat
hi pat, really look forward to your video,s, always super interesting and in some lovely scenic places and with the added bonus you are a top bloke.
Thanks, nice comments which I appreciate, thanks Pat
Very informative video and well presented as always.
Thanks, kind of you to say, Pat
Fantastic! I think I will get my climbing gear out and have a go at some trees.
Love the idea of tree camping; the ultimate stealth camp??
It is a fantastic place up in the trees, for me far more interesting than rock climbing, hopefully will be camping up there in Sept, you may of seen my tree camping vidio I did in June last year, all the best Pat
Nice, new presentation Patrick. I would be slightly anxious I might get up there and be scared to start off back down! I might have to be a permanent canopy resident! Great explanations as always. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Terry, actually changing over climbing systems to come back down the tree, can be a it risky, all the best Pat
Nice kit Patrick .I use to use a Buckingham USA harness . Nice to see you following your dreams
Thanks Mark, yes I think a harness is the central part of any tree climbing kit, thanks Pat
Excellent instruction. Thank You.
Hello Tadeusz, glad you enjoyed the vidio, thanks Pat
Happy camping Pat! Really enjoyed the video. 🌳🌟🙂
Thanks hoping to camp high up later on, thanks Pat
Great stuff another great video mate looking forward to part 2 thankyou
Thanks, part 2 will be out in 2 weeks, just filming it now, thanks Pat
Hi Pat,
Nothing wrong with a bit of tree climbing. I've got a few that I have climbed close by but not climbed them in a while. I have flew over them in the paramotor though. Does that count?
Interesting to hear about your equipment and the ropes. Static and dynamic.
There was a guy called Albert Pierrepoint once and he used static ropes to arrest falls and yes your right. Dead right. They did cause injury! The sudden jolt was swift and clean so they say!
The cube for the throw line is a great idea. I have put antennas into trees for ham radio purposes and as you say, if the line is on the woodland floor it picks up all sorts of stuff and snags. Very frustrating.
Looking forward to part two:)
Sandy
Hi Sandy, you must get a amazing view high above the trees in your Paramotors, as long as you don, t land in them of course.
It's been interesting reading up on the different types of gear, like ropes etc, always nice to be learning something new, only just bought the cube after getting my throw line tangled up over the last year, worth it and it packs down so small.
More exciting in parts 2 and 3 as we leave the comfort and saftey of the forest floor, all the best Pat
Really enjoyed it Patrick. Have tried both SRT and DRT and prefer DRT using a zigzag and foot ascender. Have also used two slings to climb slender trees and poles. Can’t wait for next in the series.
Thanks Bill, so many different climbing techniques, I like the SRT myself, but different trees different techniques, all the best Pat
Hi Pat, I think all men are children at heart, that's why we get in trouble with the wife, we are be there grown up child LOL. Great video as ever, looking forward to the next one.
Hi Brian, must admit I keep returning to my childhood pastimes, even better second time round. Luckly now we are not answerable to anyone, apart from the wife, all the best Pat
Fantastic video truly! Very informative and helpful! Thank you!
Thanks Danny, as you can see alot of gear, but all interesting, and pleasure to use, glad it was useful, thanks Pat
Hell yeah pat stay safe and have fun climbing 👍
I will do for as long as I can, all the best Pat
When we were brats, we never suspected tree climbing would become so involved, did we? Once it was as simple as pretending i couldn't, and watching the girls go first! (Can't think why that would be...) I wish I could still hack it, as it appeals to me, camping up there. But I'll have to do so vicariously thru your very informative and enjoyable videos. Your enthusiasm cannot be hidden, Pat. Hope you get some decent spells in this summer, such as its turned out so far, and I'm very keen to see the next two, having been intrigued by your previous ones. Stay safe, & good times mate! Thank you.
Yeah I think I know why you let the girls go first, which gentleman would, nt, Haha It is another world up there, hope to show you in part 2 thanks Pat
Glad your back pat been to long can't wait for next video thanks.
Thanks Jack, lucking forward to getting higher up in the trees, all the best Pat
Great series thank you
Thanks Eric, so many different types of gear, all seems very well made which is reassuring, thanks Pat
Fantastic stuff.. I'd love to do this.
It's all waiting for you out there, thanks Pat
hi patrick. looking forward to part two. When i climbed up a tree, me and my mates would play `tree tick` lol. I would also make a rope swing , especially if I was over a slope or a stream or pond All the best mate :-)
Yes Billy all brings back happy memories from childhood days, when every day was a adventure, all the best Pat
Love your vids Patrick.
Thanks Mark
Cheerful lad....like to watch you videos.
Thanks Matthew
Amazing as always! Keep it up!
Thanks appreciate your comments thanks Pat
great video as usual pat yes kids these days are missing out big time infact I was listening to bbc radio 2 other week loads of people were texting in about climbing trees after an article about a woman who used to climb her tree to escape bullies and now shes older she still does also keep up the good work matey.
Lucky we did, nt have anything else to occupy out time in our childhood, just playing in the woods nd making our own entertainment, great it was.
I like climbing trees because it is different, but it maybe getting more popular, all the best Pat
Your welcome to abseil down the well shaft in my garden if you fancy camping down there sometime.
Thanks for the offer, thanks Pat
Great video Pat. Roll on parts 2 & 3 👍 Johnny :)
Thanks Johnny, should get a bit more exciting as we head up into the trees, all the best Pat
I wasn’t going to watch these as I’m binge watching your channel and had no interest in these. But wow I’m pleased I have what a great set off 3 videos to give you an insight into safely tree climbing
Great channel Patrick well done
Thanks Mally and glad you enjoyed the tree climbing series of videos, this waßa follow up from last year's tree camping, which I,am hoping to return to in the Spring, all the best Pat

Scratch that I figured it out lol it’s simpler that getting it up lol

Really nice to hear fron California, you sound very experienced so really appreciate your comments, all the best Pat
Totally identify with this, as I was usually the one shaking conkers from the very top of the tree for the rest of the gang, or carefully placing fruit in my pockets from others..
Yes know exactly where your coming from, I was the same, had to be the one that got to the highest point, happy days, all the best Pat
Thanks for the video!
Your very welcome Robert, thanks Pat
Thanks Patrick
Glad you enjoyed the video thanks Pat
Have a good day pat
Thanks I will, try and make every day a great day, thanks Pat
Hi Pat. Awesome and informative video as always . Roll on parts 2 and 3. The boys in blue will have a tough time spotting you in the canopy this time so you have your peace and quiet and no 36 DD hassles this time :-)) Cheers and all the best from Malaysia
Nice to hear from you Razif, hope all is well in Malaysia and the weather is not too hot. Another private world up in the tree canopy, should have part 2 out in just over a week, already filmed just need to edit it, all the best Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 Hi Pat. Always pretty damn hot out here😓. Nice to see you've had some of our temps recently back in Blighty with more forecast for August Bank Holiday 😎. I was wondering what was happening with the tree camping adventures after your excellent videos on it last year and the time and effort spent making your rig. Can't wait to see parts 2 and 3 of your latest foray. Keep up the good work and excellent videos. ATB from out here buddy . Cheers. Razif
My 13 year old daughter walked in when this was playing and said "oh cool, it's Patrick!". PS I still have many nasty scars from tree climbing. Wouldn't swap them. By the way, I thought you were wearing Marigolds for one moment!
Very nice to be appreciated, the things you do when your younger, suppose we all thought we were fearless then. Thanks again, Pat
Great video...very interesting👍 Here in Finland we have a lot of big and high trees. 😀
Yes I can imagine your very tall pine trees, probably a bit too high for me, thanks Pat
The waist belt on your saddle should sit on the hips, it'll be more comfortable that way. Also, you should move the pads of the leg loops more to the outside, they are not where they should be at the moment.
Yes thanks for that Raphael, felt very comfortable, perhaps just a bit of adjustment, thanks Pat
GREAT VIDEO PAT
Thanks Anthony
Great informative video Pat. Your home must be full of different hobby equipment, I wonder if the wife really knows how much gear you really own....Ssssshhhh it's a man's secret

Hi Adrian, yes I have various cupboards all round the house with camping, climbing, photo gear etc etc. See you on part 2 all the best Pat
Another wicked video, always very informative ✌️ and yes your Right! We are still kid's, just older in this adult world!!! Which we've had to Follow by the Rules 🤘🤘👍👍👍
Looking forward to seeing the other videos 👌🏻
By the way, the Wife asked? What if you're crap at throwing the Throw line thingy 🤭🤭🤭
#takecareoutthere 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
As you get older, well whose bothered what other people think, as long as there is fun and adventure out there. As for throw lines if you can,t throw there is Sherrill Big Shot a large catapult on a 6 foot pole you can accurately get your throwbag 100+ foot up in a tree, all the best Pat
thank you Patrick!
Your very welcome, hope it was useful, thanks Pat
